From parades to a pop concert at Buckingham Palace, Britain is commemorating an unprecedented Platinum Jubilee year of the monarchy with a four-day weekend. The queen would traditionally ride with the military parade on horseback but in recent years has shifted to driving alongside in a carriage. The beginning of his 50th year on the throne was marked with church services, feasts, fireworks and souvenirs. But in 1959, she shifted it to the second Saturday. It has been a central feature of the British royal calendar for more than 260 years and sees a huge display of over 1,400 parading soldiers, many clad in iconic red uniforms and black bearskin hats. But her father, King George VI, was born on Dec. 14, and he tended to mark his official birthday on the second Thursday in June. She has anchored the country through uncertainty — and the royal family’s own dramas. In her note, the queen urges that people should look back but also forward. The castle tower and a statue of King Charles II are out of focus in the background.

In 2018, American actress Meghan Markle went one step further by marrying into the British royal family. Of course, there’s an element of pragmatism in the tradition of warm American receptions. President Reagan may have mistakenly referred to Diana as “Princess David,” but no one will forget Diana’s turn on the dance floor with actor John Travolta. It might seem strange, given the nation’s decision to sever ties with George III in 1776. But what’s with Americans’ fascination with the British monarchy in the first place? They won’t be alone in expressing affection for the queen.

Edward VII, who succeeded Queen Victoria and ruled the United Kingdom through the first decade of the 20th century, is believed to have been the first monarch to receive the annual salute in person. The Queen is usually greeted by a royal salute and carries out an inspection of the troops in their famous bearskin hats.
Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations began with Trooping the Color and royals greeting massive crowds from the Buckingham Palace balcony.
"A platinum jubilee is something that the next few generations won’t see in their lifetimes.” She came out wearing a light blue hat and coat adorned with a brooch, as well as her now ever-present walking stick, necessary because of her "episodic mobility problems," according to the palace. “We absolutely love the queen,” said Jenny Parris, 50, who was with her sister, Carol, who had flown in from South Africa just for the occasion. Then, Prince Charles, Prince William and Princess Anne arrived on horseback to inspect the regiments involved in Trooping the Color, a military parade that has been held for more than 260 years to mark the monarch’s ceremonial summer birthday. Clifton, 35, and his friend Louise D’Costa, who lives in London, arrived early and managed to get a front-row spot along the parade route. Others are mindful of the queen's age and her recent health troubles — acutely aware there will be a finite number of these events left to celebrate the only monarch most have ever known.
The palace said she had experienced “discomfort” at events on Thursday. Britain is marking the monarch's 70 years on the throne with four days of events.
"She's been my queen all my life and I think we owe her an awful lot for the service she's given to the country. So I wanted to come to show my support today and say thank you." Prince Charles played a key role during the event as he stood in for his mother. And 12 protesters were arrested Thursday after getting past barriers and onto the parade route. The queen, wearing a dusky dove blue dress designed by Angela Kelly, was joined on the balcony by more than a dozen royals — though not Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, who gave up front-line royal duties two years ago. He was flanked by his sister, Princess Anne, and oldest son Prince William. Smiling, she chatted with her great-grandson Prince Louis, 4, who occasionally covered his ears as 70 military aircraft old and new swooped low over the palace to salute the queen. "I know that many happy memories will be created at these festive occasions," Elizabeth said. The decision also, handily, excluded Prince Andrew, who stepped away from public duties amid controversy over his links with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Yet after a lifetime of good health, age has begun to catch up with her. This country does like a good party. The six-minute display included a formation of Typhoon fighter jets flying in the shape of the number 70.

The only demographics in which more than half were interested in the jubilee were Conservative voters, leave voters and the over-65s.
