Marin Cilic Wins 5-Set Thriller Against Andrey Rublev, Reaches ... (ATP Tour)

Marin Cilic dug deep to seal a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(10-2) win over Andrey Rublev and reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the first time on ...

The 20th seed frequently found acute angles with his groundstrokes to keep Rublev on the move, and Cilic clinched another crucial solitary break for 4-3 in the third after targeting the Rublev second serve. A tight fifth set saw few chances until Cilic missed a forehand into the net on match point at 5-4, but the Croatian made no mistake in the tie-break. Cilic gave the seventh seed no chance to convert as he consistently found huge serves at key moments, but Rublev continued to hit aggressively with his return and the pressure told. Despite dropping a tight first set to one of the biggest ball-strikers on the ATP Tour, it was Cilic whose power-hitting came good as he manoeuvred Rublev around Court Philippe Chatrier to great effect. "I played that kind of tennis the whole match, and especially the fifth set was an incredible battle. The 33-year-old is just the fifth active player to reach semi-finals of all four Grand Slams, alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

The world No 23 defeated his Russian opponent 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6( 2) and has now reached the semi-finals of every grand slam tournament.

But this year at the French Open he has done so, reaching the semi-final here for the first time in his career by defeating Andrey Rublev, the seventh seed, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) in one of the best matches of the tournament so far. With his success in Paris, he will also cross the $30m (£24m) mark for prize money. He played a great tiebreak, the first ever seen on Court Philippe Chatrier, filled with nuclear forehand winners and big serving, to advance.

Paris, Jun 1 (EFE).- Croatia's Marin Cilic continued his dream run at the French Open on Wednesday, edging past world No. 7 Andrey Rublev 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, ...

Rublev, a big hitter in his own right, ended the match with a relatively low 15 aces and 35 winners. “Andrey played incredibly well and it was an incredible performance on the court – a lot of heart. Especially, the fifth set was an incredible battle,” Cilic said afterward. His service games were more comfortable, although he had to escape a 0-30 hole before holding to take a two-set-to-one lead. I played that kind of tennis the whole match. Although Cilic managed to stave off three break points in the seventh game and two more in the ninth, Rublev finally converted his sixth break-point opportunity thanks to a Cilic forehand error to take a 6-5 lead and then wrapped up the first set by striking his 17th ace of the contest.

Croatian denies seventh seed to reach first Roland-Garros semi-final.

Rublev had claimed four of the pair’s six encounters but his 33-year-old opponent showed some of his brilliant hard-court best in a return to form at Melbourne Park when he rolled Rublev under lights in the third round in January. He dropped a set in each of his four prior matches, including the fourth round in which he benefitted from the retirement of Jannik Sinner to a knee injury. Rublev had denied Novak Djokovic to win the Serbian’s home tournament in Belgrade, but had not won a set in any of his four previous visits to a Grand Slam quarter-final.
