Martina Trevisan reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros, and extended her winning streak to 10 matches, with a three-set defeat of Leylah ...

Fernandez had made it to a third set largely thanks to her competitive instincts, and they came to the fore again when the US Open finalist was almost down and out. Serving for the match, Trevisan failed to make a first serve, and Fernandez used her own forehand to punish her. But Trevisan shook off the disappointment and came out firing in the decider. Fernandez went up 3-1, only for Trevisan to find her range with her passing shots to win four of the next five games. She becomes the third Italian woman to reach the Roland Garros semifinals in the Open Era, following 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone and 2012 finalist Sara Errani. In any given forehand-to-forehand exchange, it was Trevisan's versatility and weight of shot that invariably got the upper hand.

She had the foot taped during a medical timeout after the fifth game, trailing 3-2. In the first of the men’s quarterfinals, 2020 U.S. Open runner-up Alexander Zverev is taking on 19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez out of Roland Garros (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan has dumped US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez out of the French Open.

Trevisan raced into a 3-0 lead in the deciding set and won a fiercely contested fourth game to earn a double break. Fernandez comfortably claimed the tiebreak to become the first player to take a set off Trevisan at Roland Garros this year, but it was to prove only a brief respite. Trevisan had all the answers as she dominated most of the match against a below-par Fernandez, who struggled to repeat the form that took her to last year’s US Open final.

On the surface, Martina Trevisan's run to the Roland Garros semifinals this year seems surprising, but the reality is she has game -- an especially good ...

In the past, Trevisan has let the moment get the better of her, but the key to her progress in Paris has been to soak in the moment. "So I accepted the situation and I tried to be focused on every point. "Even I felt a lot of tension and I was so nervous, because even my arms felt it, but I was happy anyway. But at 28, Trevisan is now the first of the group to make a major semifinal. Martina Trevisan is having the time of her life. "I looked around me and I was in the most important court in the world," Trevisan said. The Italian handled a then-16-year-old Gauff in cold and heavy night-time conditions and she'll know what to expect this time around as well. "I saw Flavia and Francesca yesterday because they are playing the Legends tournament," Trevisan said. The week before the French Open, Trevisan captured her first title on the Hologic WTA Tour, winning on the clay in Rabat. Including a win against Garbiñe Muguruza, her second against an opponent in the Top 10, Trevisan has been unstoppable since. In the Round of 16, Trevisan ended Aliaksandra Sasnovich's run, and she held her nerve to stop Fernandez, who had beaten Bencic and Anisimova. Her win versus Fernandez was her 10th in a row. Eventually, she found herself with a racquet in hand, not to compete but to coach at her local club.

Italian Martina Trevisan continues her nearly-perfect clay court season with a win over Canadian Leylah Fernandez at Roland Garros 2022.

Down 3-2 in the opening set, Fernandez called for a medical trainer, signaling issues with her right foot. The disparity of unforced errors between the two women proved a decisive element of the quarter-final, with Trevisan committing 29 unforced errors to Fernandez’s 44. Despite having match point, the Italian was unable to tame Fernandez’s tenacity, losing her serve with a rare groundstroke error. Trevisan entered her quarter-final match on Phillippe-Chatrier having won 18 of her last 19 sets. Trevisa’s feat marks the latest highlight in her unprecedented clay-court season this year. Trevisan, who entered the tournament unseeded, was nearly perfect during her week in Morocco, only dropping a single set throughout her five-match journey to the winner’s podium.
