People who know Saginaw's Darvin Ham praise Lakers coach's ... (The Detroit News)

The news of Darvin Ham's hiring as Lakers coach has been met with endorsements from those who crossed paths with the Saginaw native during his career.

He put the time in on the practice floor and it was always a nice carryover in the game. “He was working hard, working all the players out, worked me out,” Sandiford-Artest said. He also is capable of communicating in a way where you can receive it the right way. “… Darvin was such a hard worker. Metta Sandiford-Artest — then known as Metta World Peace — was on that Lakers team and remembers tabbing Ham as a future coach. He remembered Ham as someone who would never “bulls–- in practice” because he was too committed. Every time he got in the game, he just raised the level of play. “He brought the heat to practice every day. He’s a true competitor, has always been a competitor,” Thomas said. “I’m sure if you talked to the guys that he played with, he was probably their favorite-teammate type dude. That Ham struggled to make the team at Saginaw High and still has come so far speaks to an essential part of his character — his relentlessness. Back then, Thomas trusted his returning players to help build the team’s roster, and nearly all of them said Ham should make the cut.

The Lakers may not encroach on some of new head coach Darvin Ham's decisions as much as some thought they might.

But there is another encouraging aspect of this hire – according to reports, Ham will be given the freedom to choose who will be on his staff.

Lakers Phil Handy Could Be in Line to Join Nets Staff (Heavy.com)

There could be a major addition to the Nets coaching staff in the wake of the Lakers hiring of head coach Darvin Ham.

When Nets head coach Steve Nash got hired to replace former Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson, the decision to do so was a bit of a head-scratcher for a lot of people in the basketball community. Handy was Kyrie Irving’s assistant coach on the Cleveland Cavaliers when they won the NBA title in 2016. If the Nets are bringing Irving back, having Handy on the staff to forge a stronger connection with him would be, well, Handy.” He’s very private, and his circle is very small and he’s not a guy that really extends himself a lot to people that he doesn’t know. And another: Will the Lakers keep highly rated developmental coach Phil Handy,” Stein writes per his Substack account. NBA Insider Marc Stein says that if Handy indeed is on the way out of Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Nets could be a possible landing spot for the decorated assistant.
