Marcus Ericsson wins 2022 Indianapolis 500 in a two-lap shootout ... (USA TODAY)

It came down to two laps, and Marcus Ericsson remained on top to win "the Greatest Spectacle in Racing," Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Spaniard was forced to continue down pit road without stopping and return to the track, but with his fuel running out, Palou had to make an emergency stop with pit road still closed. VeeKay, who started on the front row next to the Ganassi pair, brought out the first caution on lap 39. Dixon, the six-time IndyCar Series champion started on the pole for the second consecutive 500 and the fifth time in his career. "It was hard to remain focused," Ericsson said after the race. The 31-year-old technically won under caution when Sage Karam crashed on the backstretch and brought out the yellow flag as the leaders entered turn 3. He and Kenny Bräck are the only drivers from Sweden to win the race.

Marcus Ericsson had to leave Formula One to make his name – a goal achieved on Sunday when the Swedish driver won the Indianapolis 500.

The stoppage gave Pato O’Ward and the rest of the challengers almost 12 minutes to strategize how to catch Ericsson for the win. It is the fifth Indy 500 victory for team owner Chip Ganassi, who caught a ride to the victory podium on the side of Ericsson’s car. IndyCar is among the purest forms of motorsports and rarely throws artificial cautions or issues stoppages that might change the outcome.

Dixon grabbed the lead from O’Ward at the restart, and the two began to trade places - with Dixon was clearly keen on staying out front ahead of the final pit phase. But Dixon was soon back in front – picking up the mantle of the all-time Indy 500 lap leader from the late Al Unser Sr – with O’Ward and Daly content to run in his slipstream, as Rosenqvist demoted Ferrucci to fifth. Dixon had been in the pound seats for the majority of the race after his impressive pole, leading the 33 cars to Turn 1 ahead of team-mate Alex Palou and Ed Carpenter Racing's Rinus VeeKay. Palou grabbed the lead at Turn 3 on the opening lap and VeeKay further demoted Dixon at Turn 1 on lap 2. Daly was swamped on the Lap 113 restart, as O’Ward passed both Daly and Dixon to grab the lead, with Ferrucci sweeping up to fourth ahead of Rosenqvist, Kanaan, Ericsson and Ed Carpenter. On the restart, Ericsson weaved aggressively to break the tow to O'Ward - but at the start of the final lap O'Ward attempted to clear Ericsson around the outside. This was after Scott Dixon, who had led the majority of laps in the race, was caught speeding in the pitlane on his final stop and thus had to serve a drive-through penalty.

Swiss Kiss: Ericsson gives Ganassi another Indy 500 victory (Coast Reporter)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marcus Ericsson, once a Formula One backmarker, is now an IndyCar frontrunner. And an Indianapolis 500 champion.

Ganassi had not won the 500 in 10 years and sent five legitimate contenders to Indy to end the drought. The New Zealander led 95 of the 200 laps, and his Honda was easily the fastest in the field — so fast that Dixon didn't slow down enough on his final pit stop. It is the fifth Indy 500 win for team owner Chip Ganassi, who caught a ride to the podium on the side of Ericsson's car. He signed a contract extension with Arrow McLaren SP on Friday and desperately wanted the win to celebrate his status as McLaren's star. “You're going to have things happen in these 500-mile races and they're not always going to fall your way. But O'Ward finished second, falling just short as he tried to give Mexico a banner celebration on the biggest day in motorsports; Sergio Perez opened Sunday with a win in the Monaco Grand Prix. “When that caution came out, I thought it was going to be another restart. Karam was transported to a hospital for evaluation of muscular soreness. IndyCar is among the purest forms of motorsports and rarely throws artificial cautions or issues stoppages that might change the outcome. The Indianapolis 500 is like the girlfriend in a toxic relationship a man can’t get out of his mind, no matter how badly she treats him. “As for Scott, we called a great race, he drove a great race and we do things together as a team,” Hull said. At the end of the day, we try again next year. When Spencer Pigot pounded the end of the pit road attenuator with five laps to go, IndyCar Race Control decided to let the race finish under yellow. After starting on the pole and leading 95 of 200 laps, Dixon came onto pit lane as the leader, to make his final pit stop that would take him to an apparent second Indy 500 victory. Once Johnson’s damaged car had been removed from the track, that set up essentially a “green-white-checkered” flag finish. He was stopped on the end of pit road directly ahead of Pato O’Ward’s Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. His wife, Emma, was distraught, telling NBC Sports that she was “gutted” by the call.

Indy 500: Ericsson wins 106th edition after late red-flag drama (Motorsport.com, Edition: Australia)

Chip Ganassi Racing's Marcus Ericsson won the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 after a red flag for Jimmie Johnson's late crash.

Dixon pitted for the final time on Lap 175, almost losing it under brakes at pit-in – and he pinged for speeding as a result. O’Ward pitted later than all of them and cycled his way to the front, while Kanaan suffered a slow stop and lost ground to the leaders, losing a spot to Ericsson also. Ericsson jumped clear with aggressive weaving, O’Ward attacked around the outside of Turn 1 but Ericsson held him off. Ericsson then battled past O’Ward, who had to back out of the gas, for third. Dixon and Conor Daly (ECR) had just made their stops but Palou was caught out by a closed pitlane and he had to drive straight through. The second round of pitstops had just begun when Callum Ilott crashed his Juncos Hollinger car at Turn 2.

The experience of race running is hard to simulate and recreate in practice. The big question over VeeKay is if he will be able to perform at an elite level consistently given the right equipment. Johnson lost places at the start and continued to fall back with understeer. For Alex Palou, his second place in last year’s Indy 500 continued his momentum towards the championship. He’s learned the lessons of the Indy 500 and now he has become a master in biding his time until the end of the race. He didn’t throw away second trying to win, and he’s been rewarded in the championship standings. It seems odd to pick out the 19th- and 20th-place finishers as winners. But perhaps O’Ward knew going that high on the race track with so little downforce was a risk. While his six-time champion team-mate Scott Dixon made a crucial error at the last round of pitstops, Ericsson was cool and calm. While he may have been the furthest back of the McLaren trio, Juan Pablo Montoya showed this. You wonder if O’Ward could have stuck the move at Turn 1 rather than bailing on it so early. To F1 fans, he might be a talent lost in poor machinery or someone who couldn’t quite cut it.

Indy 500: Scott Dixon's penalty cost him more than a win (Beyond the Flag)

While seeing a second Indy 500 win escape hurts enough as it is, Scott Dixon's penalty could have massive ramifications as it pertains to the championship.

But if you assume Dixon wins in front of Ericsson in second place, O’Ward in third, and Palou in 10th, it is Dixon leading the standings with 248 points. Following the race, Ericsson finds himself leading the championship standings for the first time in his IndyCar career, jumping from eighth to first place with his victory, and O’Ward sits in second after jumping from sixth. Dixon has historically been known for coming on strong at the end of seasons as opposed to the beginning. In 2015, he dominated the race, only to be shuffled back to fourth late and unable to recover. He was issued a drive-through penalty after receiving his final service of the day, completely knocking him out of contention for the win. So he scored 33 instead of a perfect 115.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — “Winning the Indy 500, it's not bad for a pay driver.”

“I use it as motivation, but also I understand when you have (my teammates). It's so obvious I'm not going to be the one in the spotlight,” Ericsson said. Ericsson also got paid; his Indy 500 win earned him a $3.1 million payout from the record total purse of $16 million. Finn Rausing, one of Ericsson's longtime backers, attended his first Indy 500 on Sunday and then kissed the bricks in celebration of his investment's victory. But the Ganassi organization isn't a backmarker team and Ericsson was now driving cars capable of winning races. It's not that Ericsson was some rich kid who bought his way into Formula One without the talent to warrant a seat. He partnered with Swedish company Huski Chocolate, which sponsors the No. 8 car that Ericsson drove to the win Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 2022 Indy 500 purse was a record $16 million with winner Marcus Ericsson earning a historic $3.1 million. Jimmie Johnson was named rookie of the year.

Though the Indy 500 finish factors heavily into choosing the rookie of the year, performance during the month (including qualifying) and positive contributions to promoting the event also can factor in heavily. Johnson qualified 12th for the race and consistently was fast in practice on the 2.5-mile oval. Every driver in the 2022 Indy 500 earned at least six figures (with 26th-place finisher Stefan Wilson at $102,000 as the lowest earner). Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Indy 500 was limited to 135,000 fans and offered a purse of $8,854,565. “This year’s record-setting purse is reflective of their tireless pursuit of history and the world-class talent they display on every lap.” The purse was an increase of more than 80 percent over the prize money from the previous year. That was up slightly from the $7,502,500 purse ( $1.37 million to winner Takuma Sato) for the 2020 Indy 500, which was held without fans in attendance for the first time. The payouts for the 2022 Indy 500: The average payout to the 33 drivers in the 2022 Indy 500 was $485,000. “The Indianapolis 500 is the greatest race in the world, and these drivers lay it all on the line for a chance to drink the winner’s milk and kiss the famous Yard of Bricks,” Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Roger Penske said in a release. Before the pandemic moved the race to August and decimated revenue streams for the NTT IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the 2020 Indy 500 purse originally was slated to be a record $15 million with at least $2 million to the winner Ericsson earned the largest winner’s payout in the race’s history.

We were finally in clear air and I was pushing hard – we knew we could jump a bunch still to pit and I was optimistic of a solid finish inside the 10 – but a gust of wind caught us and we were done. It was a wild month of weather and yesterday was such a strong wind – it sweeps around the walls and just caught me out, which is on me. Normally on this day the head is a little foggy after a few beers – but last night was a quiet one after our hard hit – not exactly how we wanted the day to end.

Race results are, however, not the only metric by which Rookie of the Year, which is voted on by the media and IndyCar/Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials, is decided. He made the Fast 12 in qualifying and would have even been in the Fast Nine of old given he was sixth-quickest with a 232.398mph (374.008km/h) run on the Saturday prior to race weekend. And Romain Grosjean of course suffered the shunt that most onlookers had predicted in his practice days. Alexander Rossi, who normally suffers poor luck at the Speedway (and indeed, most other places) since his shock win as a rookie in 2016, was the lone high spot for Andretti Autosport-Honda. He climbed from 20th to finish fifth. The boys did a good job in the pits, and that's the reason we went forward in the race, so thanks to them. An early final stop, in which he described the car’s handling as “terrible”, saw him pit under red in 11th, but unfortunately he stalled when engine were re-fired and Race Control ordered him to remain at the back of the field for the restart, in 22nd. Teammate Josef Newgarden also stalled leaving the pits when he accidentally selected second instead of first, but he came home 13th, while, Scott McLaughlin’s charge from 26th on the grid saw him reach 11th before his nasty-looking double-impact accident at Turns 3 and 4 at three-quarter distance.

That was in my mind when I was sitting there on the red flag. “We had that very conversation last night. “I was not going to lift – there was no way I was going to lift – I just kept my foot down and that was the race-winning move.

'I let down so many people': Scott Dixon still wrestling with bitter loss ... (NBC Sports - Motorsports)

After a pit speeding mistake that cost him the Indy 500, Scott Dixon remained dejected but relieved Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Marcus Ericsson still won.

“I’ve still got plenty to work on but it’s with one of the greatest teams in the sport’s history and working with the best in the business that has created that. Dixon knows that feeling from when he won the 2008 Indianapolis 500. Dixon was slower on the in-lap to the pits because he got held up by traffic. Always known for his mastery of fuel conservation, Dixon was able to match the roughly 4.5 miles per gallon that those in traffic were getting even while he was leading the race. During the second-to-last stint, Dixon was able to build a significant gap as the team simulated the pace needed for the last fuel run. “I didn’t actually think it was over, but obviously it’s a system that doesn’t lie,” Dixon said. It’s never one person, it’s hundreds of small details and the people that we get to work with that make this possible.” He started from the Indy 500 pole position for the fifth time and led a race-high 95 of 200 laps, becoming the all-time lap leader in Indianapolis 500 history. But Sunday’s execution was flawless by the crew, which employed some shrewd tactical maneuvering that helped Dixon catch a few breaks. He finished 21st and collected a check for $707,000 after arriving late to Monday night’s ceremony. “It was a real bummer. A huge contingent of Chip Ganassi Racing’s 160 employees (along with many family and friends) gathered Monday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for celebratory photo ops around the track.
