The first trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, coming in 2023, is full of danger for Cal Kestis.
Curiously, Cal who spent the previous game gaining a family of allies is all alone. Check out IGN's review for Jedi: Fallen Order here. The first trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor premiered as part of Star Wars Celebration. The sequel to Respawn’s critically-acclaimed Star Wars game is set to be released in 2023.
Following the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor teaser trailer, the question on everyone's mind is who's in the bacta tank, and there are a few possibilities.
There are some rumors that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will feature two playable characters, and if not Merrin, then it seems that this Jedi would likely be a contender. Bacta tanks are nothing new in the Star Wars universe, but the character being in one suggests a few things. It’s not known how long someone can survive in a bacta tank, so this could be a truly old Jedi Cal discovers. It could be that Taron was placed into a Bacta tank sometime after, while spending 5 years in there would explain the hair growth. Immediately after the trailer, many began to question who this character was—who is in the Bacta tank? This Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel is set 5 years after the original, meaning Cal has likely grown in strength as a Jedi Knight.
During Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, we got our first glimpse of Cal Kestis' next video game adventure, set for release in 2023.
Star Wars Celebration is a convention solely devoted to a galaxy far, far away. We can't wait to share more about the game with the world later this year." The sequel picks up five years after the original game, with Cal Kestis seemingly at a low point following a defeat by a Sith lord.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen talks to StarWars.com about the highly-anticipated game's new teaser and much more.
We felt like this was a place we could go to and we could establish a lot of the things that we want to achieve in the game, and the world was just very rich and a good kind of stomping ground for us to have fun with combat and gameplay. There’s nothing that’s more important to us than getting the controller into the players’ hands and having them have a Star Wars experience that they feel is worthwhile, they have fun playing, and it puts a smile on their face. Some of that is portrayed in the trailer, and again, I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s definitely a sense of… Going to Dathomir was really exciting because I never thought I would see that in a video game, and I thought it showed a real love for the whole saga. Right there, that’s the purpose in the tone of it, is to leave the player with a lot of questions but they’re very intrigued. That means that we have more time to polish, that means that we can iterate more, and we can get better results that feel more filmic. When I saw the episode of Book of Boba Fett when they had a BD droid, and I’m watching that with my kids, it brought tears to my eyes. There were a lot of things that we left — I guess you would call on the editing room floor — from Jedi: Fallen Order that we knew that we wanted to put into the sequel. Stig Asmussen: Well, it turns out it worked out for us very well, because we wanted to make a Metroidvania-designed game, and that kind of means the player is in lock step, one-to-one, with the main character. Some of that comes down to like, more stances for combat, or where we’re going to go with the story, how Cal and the crew are going to evolve and grow, how we’re going to approach the worlds and the levels in the game, and expand them and make them more vibrant than they’ve been in the past. The points good and bad were fair, and those are things that we use to grow and build on the next game. StarWars.com: One thing I really liked about it was that I found Cal Kestis to be a really great audience surrogate.

The PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC game is set five years after the events of Jedi: Fallen Order…
EA announced a Fallen Order sequel in January, along with two other Star Wars projects in development at Respawn. While there have been multiple Star Wars Jedi: Survivor leaks in recent months, details about the game were officially kept under wraps until today. “For Jedi: Survivor, we are working in lockstep with Lucasfilm Games to build on the legacy of Jedi: Fallen Order. We’re leveraging advanced technology to create more dynamic Jedi combat and cinematic storytelling to expand on Cal’s story as he matures and survives during the dark times. Due for release in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, the game is the sequel to developer Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
The sequel is set to have a more menacing tone…
“The game is all about survival. “Yeah, you nailed it,” Asmussen replied. The director of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has revealed that the game will have a darker plot than its predecessor, Fallen Order.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor picks up five years after Fallen Order, and things are not looking great for Cal Kestis.
We only get brief glimpses of a close-up at them, and while they give off some major Cloud Strife vibes, it’s quite possible this is a brand new character, though someone Cal may be turning to for help at his darkest moments, whether he wants to or not. It’s also worth noting he does have his trademark lightsaber (that he loses at some point in the trailer) on him in this moment. We’ll have to wait to find out what returning faces join Cal along the way, which new ones prove to be true allies, and how he plans to continue surviving against the Empire closer toward Jedi: Survivor’s launch next year. It could even be the sequel trilogy’s prominent desert planet Jakku. But it could also potentially be the desert moon Jedha. Not only is the moon spiritually and historically significant spot for the Jedi, and as we see later in the trailer Cal at some point needs a lightsaber, but we also know the planet eventually becomes the base of operations for someone Cal has already had ties to: Saw Gerrera, who Cal met during Fallen Order. Still, this antagonistic force is clearly interested in hunting down Cal Kestis. And that’s no surprise, given Cal has been outrunning the Empire for years as a known Jedi, and in particular his run-in with some powerful foes in Jedi: Fallen Order. This imposing figure’s voiceover intones the entire trailer, saying “Tell me Cal Kestis, why lead when they won’t follow,” questioning what Cal’s next move will be as he creepily ogles Cal’s lightsaber. That information would have been valuable to the Empire, but also left the Mantis crew on their own - it’s possible not everyone in the ensuing years agreed with Cal’s call, or there may be other issues brewing during such an oppressive time in the galaxy. Throughout the trailer, slow pans of a character in a bacta tank are interspersed along with the rest of Cal’s tribulations, before ultimately ending with Cal standing before said person in the tank, amidst an otherwise spare and desolate room overgrown with flora. As we mentioned earlier, it seems Cal is quite alone for the moment. He could be alluding to some sort of division of purpose among the group amidst the increasing, imposing force of the Empire. As we know from the end of Fallen Order, rather than choose to pursue the locations of other potential Jedi in the galaxy, Cal destroyed the Holocron containing that information to keep those children safer, allowing them to choose their own paths. That could lead to a theoretical trip to Jedha or another location known for its kyber crystal supplies, as he visited Ilum in the first game to forge his lightsaber with a new kyber crystal. At one point, Cal comes to blows with a masked figure wielding a red lightsaber, and seemingly loses his lightsaber in the process. But it’s actually been an even longer stretch of time in between the stories of both games: EA confirmed Survivor is set five years after the events of Fallen Order, and our first look at Survivor shows Cal and BD-1 in some serious trouble.
