Justin Thomas produced a dramatic final-round fightback to take advantage of a final-hole collapse by Mito Pereira and defeat Will Zalatoris in a play-off ...

"And it just proved for Mito to be too much on the day. For him to play the back nine at three under par with no mistakes, and then go three holes with Will Zalatoris and earn his second PGA Championship, fantastic for Justin Thomas. It's a huge thing to take on board. "He didn't play well every single round. What will it do for me in the next four-and-a-half hours? Zalatoris recovered from bogeying the 16th to birdie the next and hole an eight-footer to save par at the last, leaving him alongside Thomas, with the pair unexpectedly in a play-off when Pereira found water off the final tee on his way to a double-bogey six.

After his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship, the rising star is sure his first Major victory is coming.

Like I said, hats off to JT. He's been due for a while to get another win, let alone a Major. So excited for him.” “The fact I was able to get into a playoff was huge,” added Zalatoris. “I fought like crazy all day. So I will bottle that putt on 18 for the future.” I think yesterday [Saturday] was really the day that looking back on it, I was pretty frustrated with. “I know I’m going to get one,” he said after losing the three-hole playoff to Thomas. “It’s just a matter of time. We’ve only got four a year and it's been a dream of mine to win a Major since I was a little kid.

Will Zalatoris Has Made History, Is Only Getting Stronger (The Big Lead)

Zalatoris has finished in the top six in four of his last five tournaments and has seven Top-10s already this year. Blistering play on Thursday and Friday allowed him to enter the weekend with the lead. And the promise that he's knocking at the door with intentions to one day knock it down and start building a legacy. Will Zalatoris lost the three-hole aggregate playoff to Thomas through no fault of his own. The other the ecstasy. One showed the agony of a weekend marathon.

“I’m going to be happy wherever I finish,” Fleetwood said. I didn’t hit it in the fairway enough. I made too many mistakes on the simple things. Everything I was doing was right. The first three days I was immaculate. Thomas had holed from six feet on the par-five 13th to match the birdie Zalatoris had made after finding the green in two, but Zalatoris missed from eight feet for birdie on the 17th after Thomas had driven the green on the 302-yard par four to set up a two-putt birdie.

From there, he had to replace the ball on the nearest spot where it would stay at rest. It’s because Rule 16.1 demands that the reference point is the nearest point of complete relief from interference from the condition. He opted for lateral relief ( Rule 19.2c) and had a two-club relief area from the spot of the original ball. But there was also something else getting in the way. The first meant going back to the tee, so he clearly wasn’t keen. Zalatoris located his ball, identified it, and decided to take unplayable ball relief for one penalty stroke.

As Will Zalatoris finished out the final round of the PGA Championship, his yippy form with a putter caused collective stress online.

It is very clunky and awkward, but clearly, it isn’t hindering him too much— seeing that he had a chance to win the PGA Championship during the final round. As Zalatoris played to his second second-place finish in a major, he finished the first two days as the leader.

From Mito's graciousness to Zalatoris' amazing shot, our reporters provide InsideGOLF members exclusive color from PGA Championship Sunday.

It sharpens the mind and toughens the spirit. The good shots and the bad shots. The impressive rounds and the embarrassing ones. The last thing we want to do when we get at home is to talk about it more. Nor did Jon Rahm. Rory McIlroy skipped the task after his third and fourth rounds, as did world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler after his second-round 75. Perhaps the worst part being of a professional athlete is having to rehash the bad days in public. The winner that week in Evanston was Cameron Young, a stout player with a slow backswing, a brief pause at the top and a wickedly powerful downswing. After nuking a 5-iron into the shrubs behind the green, Zalatoris found himself in a PhD-grade rules discussion with the official in his group. It’s easy to doubt the dudes who falter on Sunday, confident that we know exactly what we’re looking at as it’s happening. Perhaps you recognize the name — yes, Young was one of the few players pushing Pereira in the final round at Southern Hills. I caught Young last year during his peak, on the back end of consecutive wins, carding four rounds of 68 or better to win by five. Even the most ardent golf fans know, after seeing hundreds of swings and hundreds of names, there are only so many players you can keep top of mind. I watched Pereira play a couple of holes that day en route to a Sunday 71.

The U.S. Golf Association has announced 30 golfers who are newly qualified for the 2022 U.S. Open.

It was also staged there in 1913 and 1963. The last time it was at the Country Club was in 1988. Mito Pereira, who held the 54-hole lead by three shots at Southern Hills before faltering late and falling into a tie for third, is also now in the field. Zalatoris, who lost a playoff to Thomas on Sunday at the PGA, is now ranked 14th in the world. This will be his second U.S. Open after he made his Open debut in 2019 at Pebble Beach. Zalatoris has two runner-up finishes and five top 10s in eight starts in the majors.
