Novak Djokovic coach makes startling Rafael Nadal comment ... (Daily Express)

Novak Djokovic's coach has insisted Rafa Nadal is favourite to win the French Open. But Goran Ivanisevic has claimed it will be better to face the Spanish ...

It will surely be the biggest quarter-final in the history of Roland Garros. I said that to you last year, here, it is always better to face Rafa other than in the final and I still think that. Last year in the semis, now in the quarters. He has to get to the quarter-finals and then they will think about this match. He knows all the good bounces, all the bad bounces, every nook and cranny. Whether he plays well or badly, under the sun or not, it changes nothing.” The Spaniard and the Serb have met a record 58 times, with Djokovic leading 30-28.

Lesia Tsurenko is fighting hard to earn her first game of the second set but Swiatek has a break point for the match. 118 world ranking places separate Swiatek and Tsurenko and it’s taking a toll on the qualifier. Osaka can’t respond to the heavy hits and Anisimova gives herself three match points to win. She cruises through the first and is living up to her top seed ranking. Anisimova serves to Osaka’s back hand and she returns it acros court. I have done that in the past few weeks and I will continue doing that here.” Focus on my game and be in a bubble that will help me be consistence. Women’s defending champion Barbora Krejcikova and - number two seed - follows that opening match and kicks off her campaign against France’s unseeded Diane Parry. I know my streak may stop one day so every day I want to be focused on my tennis and not on stats or numbers. When I played two years ago we basically played indoors so I’m pretty used to it. “Amazing. I love playing here, even though the last couple of days have been rainy. Raducanu and Norrie are among five Brits in action at Roland Garros, with Dan Evans, Heather Watson and Harriet Dart also starting their campaigns today.

Not a great deal more to say other than that Nadal's fitness help up well. We will get straight to a match report after some quotes from Rafa Nadal: "Incredible ...

"(The pain) is sometimes more, sometimes less. It's hard, in tennis, in any sport, to think of a more perfect union of competitor and venue than that of Senor Nadal and the French Open tennis. It is one set all in that, meaning that this Nadal match (on after) is not yet imminent. "I had my foot again with a lot of pain, and that's it," a forlorn Nadal said after a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 defeat. I think the intention was really good, but the execution is kind of all over the place." Jordan doesn't do anything especially noteworthy but Nadal has fluffed his lines here and is broken. Nadal just seems to lose his concentration in this game. Now Jordan Thompson has a little tantrum and smashes a spare ball into the air/the crowd. It's 40-15 to Thompson in this game and he has chances to put some pressure back on Nadal, sorta kinda. Excellent defence from Nadal, then he moves through the gears and Thompson is back under pressure. The longest rally of the match. At 15-40, Thompson is in all sorts once again.

Rafael Nadal Is Happy to Wear the Crown (Sports Illustrated)

The Spaniard, who'll turn 36 during the French Open, has become the elder statesman tennis desperately needs.

Nadal is also looking to the future, and not necessarily his. After a few days of practice, Nadal took to the court fully aware, he says, that his foot might flare up and he might soon be back in Spain. That includes his physio, Rafael Maymo, a native of Manacor whom Nadal hired in 2006, when Nadal was 20 and Maymo was 26. Like a technician going down to the basement and tinkering, he has added dimensions to his game. In the final, Nadal was the underdog against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, a decade his junior and winner of the previous major. Nadal then won in Acapulco and reeled off five matches in Indian Wells before cracking a rib and losing in the final. He wins more than two-thirds of his tiebreakers and three-fourths of his decisive sets. He was the winner of 20 majors over his gilded career, part of a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic for the most of all time in men’s tennis. But to the joy of countless fans—not least, those Mallorcan cliff-diving property squatters—Nadal left his island and got back on the road. This might be the most unlikely chapter in the account of his time on court. And when he did play, he was far from peak Nadal. It played a role in preventing him from winning the French Open for an absurd, mind-bending 14th time. And for a while it looked as if the kids of Mallorca would never again have months of free reign on the property.

Jordan Thompson gave it his all but the Australian's French Open date with Rafael Nadal ended, predictably, with him feeling nothing but angry helplessness.

He'd just gone where so many victims before him had fallen after two hours of pain in Rafa's realm. And then he'll tell them what happened when the king woke up. It earned him a code violation for ball abuse from the umpire and he got away with not receiving another one for a screamed expletive uttered after a bad bounce just compounded the hiding he was taking.
