Man City vs Aston Villa: Ratings and analysis as Gundogan ... (iNews)

Midfielder emerges from the bench to score twice late on as City come from two goals behind to clinch the Premier League on a remarkable final day, ...

Amidst all this drama there was a moment of poignancy that in a week of violent pitch incursions reminded us that the vast majority of supporters really do know how to behave. Rodri equalised with the next attack and three minutes after that the resurrection was complete, Gundogan bookending the madness to secure City’s eighth title. There was still 20 minutes to go and the feeling that Liverpool would prevail was the salient point here, filling the Etihad with dread. Before that there was a lot of precision huffing and puffing from City but nothing at the end of it. The capacity for rational thought at the Etihad was washed away in five insane minutes that evoked Aguero day in this stadium. There was more chance of turning back the tide than repelling the swollen sea of Manchester City fans drunk on bacchanal spirit.

Now, they must repeat the trick, this time at the Etihad, a decade on from the greatest Premier League denouement thanks to Sergio Aguero and all that. Aston Villa fans will doubtless be sick of hearing about their manager's Liverpool connections by the final whistle on Sunday afternoon. 'Legends': Chaos, tears as City do it again, 10 years after THAT iconic moment.

Not only did this squad write itself into City folklore, but they did it 10 years on from one of the most iconic moments in not just club, but football history. The Spaniard was effusive in his praise for his team’s accomplishment, as they once again remained at the peak of the Premier League. If there was a roof on the stadium, it would have been blown into orbit when Gundogan scored his second of the game in the 81st minute to complete City’s comeback and ensure the title would once again remain with Pep Guardiola’s side. Because in the space of just five minutes, City flipped the game — and indeed the title race — on its head. A cushioned header from Ilkay Gundogan in the 76th minute breathed life into City’s title defence, as players rushed to retrieve the ball from the net and restart the game to continue the momentum. When it comes down to winning the title race on the final day of the season, no club does it quite like Manchester City.

A stunning turnaround was then sealed on 81 minutes when Gundogan fired home Kevin De Bruyne's teasing cross to spark scenes of absolute mayhem in the Etihad and so seal the most memorable of title triumphs. Substitute Ilkay Gundogan launched the fightback with a 76th minute header and two minutes later we were level through Rodri's sweet strike. And a stunning return of three goals inside five minutes not only turned the game on its head but delivered a fourth Premier League crown in five years.

But that was soon to change as Villa, managed by former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, provided a twist in the storyline. Matty Cash put Villa in front in the 37th minute with a fine header from a Lucas Digne cross from the left flank, and the mood in the stadium instantly changed.

Manchester City v Aston Villa: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Will Manchester City cinch the title on the final day, or will they slip-up and hand it to Liverpool? Find out with Rob Smyth.

If they don’t, and Liverpool win against Wolves at Anfield, City will endure the nightmare of a trophyless season - not to mention a potential Liverpool quadruple - and Pep Guardiola will be just another bald fraud in a world full of them. City are yet to win three titles in a row, but four in five is the next best thing. Even in England, where things are relatively competitive, this is only the ninth time it has occurred in 30 years of the Premier League. On the last four occasions, starting in 2012, City have been top of the league going into the final games. For City, the presence of Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and even Danny Ings at Villa has given this game an unnervingly whiffy narrative. A Harvard study proved categorically that, had Pearce been playing for any football club in Christendom at the time, he would have scored that penalty. 10 min McGinn retrieves a loose ball on the right and curls in a good cross towards the six-yard line. And if either Pep or Klopp turns up in a beige suit and slip on brogues, I’d just hand the trophy to them straight away.” This being the final day of the season, we have three liveblogs on the go. De Bruyne’s inswinger is headed wide by Fernandinho in front of the near post. Jesus retrieves the ball and gives it to Foden, whose right-footed shot deflects just wide of the far post. Digne gets to the ball first and stabs it clear. 39 min As things stand City are still top of the league on goal difference.

Manchester City beat Aston Villa 3-2 as Pep Guardiola's side scored three late goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and win the title in incredible fashion.

As for Aston Villa, well, they have a top 10 finish to play for as they can finish in 10th with a win or as low as 14th if they lose. But a draw or defeat leaves the door open for Liverpool (who start the final day just one point behind them) to win the title and keep their incredible quadruple hopes alive. This will be a tense afternoon but nine times out of 10 you’d expect City to win this game comfortably and a few early goals will settle the nerves of the City faithful. Manchester City know a win at home against Aston Villa on the final day will secure the Premier League title for the fourth time in the last five seasons. On paper that should be the case, but it’s the final day of the season. The City team have arrived. Few moans and groans from the City fans after some loose passes. City all over the place defensively. Watkins and Coutinho have a few chances on the break after that opening goal. Of course it was Coutinho. The Etihad Stadium is absolutely stunned. We are now waiting for the newly crowned champions to come back out onto the pitch and lift the trophy. Fernandinho is then given a special ceremony as that was the 37-year-old’s final game for Man City. What an incredible career he’s had and City’s fans serenade him on the pitch as he stands there with his family.

Five Things We Learned: Manchester City 3-2 Aston Villa (Premier ... (Sports Illustrated)

Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions after a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Firstly, Fernandinho getting physically ousted by Ollie Watkins was out of the equation through his replacement. It wouldn’t come as a surprise to discover that the footballing gods may well have conjured up a game solely for the purpose of debunking a horrifically misguided theory, as Manchester City’s comeback sits on the same table as some of the best fight-backs in the division’s storied history. For a manager that is often on the receiving end of groans from a majority of Manchester City supporters for being economical with his substitutions, this was a mini-victory for the anti-narrative. For Rodri to not only be an insurmountable defensive presence as a lone number six, as well as being a faultless passing hub, his knack for standing tall in the biggest of moments from day one of the season is what possibly sets him apart from the rest. With Manchester City always being a Kyle Walker injury away from not having the best defensive right-back at their disposal, it may be a more astute plan of action for the club to target a player belonging to a similar profile to act as an understudy to the Englishman in the summer, considering ongoing links to Brighton’s Marc Cucurella. Unlike the callous Joao Cancelo - whose biggest weakness was on show in terms of being an excessive risk-taker in possession - the Ukrainian’s decision-making was dictated by the momentum of the contest, restoring a much-needed sense of control in to Manchester City’s build-up.
