Ketlen Vieira upsets Holly Holm by split decision in UFC main event ... (ESPN)

Ketlen Vieira upset former champion Holly Holm in a five-round UFC main event on Saturday to inch closer to a female bantamweight title shot.

She also nearly submitted Holm in the second round with a standing rear-naked choke, after Holm got careless in a takedown attempt. Holm did score one knockdown with a sidekick to Vieira's body in the fourth round, and she landed a pair of powerful front kicks in the fifth. The victory could very well place Vieira next in line for a title shot.

Vieira defeats another former UFC champion, taking down Holm after beating Miesha Tate in November.

"I am the next champion of the women's bantamweight champion," Vieira told Daniel Cormier in her post-fight interview. Vieira attempted a head kick early in Round 3 but allowed Holm to push her opponent to the clinch. Holm spent the majority of the round pummeling Vieira while pressing her against the fence. The look on Holm's face sparked flashbacks of her Hail Mary rear-naked choke loss to Miesha Tate at UFC 200; however, Holm wrangled free and fed Vieira a sharp elbow. Vieira was willing to contend on the feet with three-division boxing champion and Holm was comfortable grappling with the Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo specialist. Holm and Vieira struck accurately and often.

UFC Fight Night Report: Ketlen Vieira defeats Holly Holm by split ... (POST Wrestling)

Eric Marcotte's review of Saturday's card where Ketlen Vieira defeated Holly Holm by a narrow split decision in the bantamweight main event.

In the final minute of the round, Vieira landed a short combination that knocked Holm’s head back but was unable to capitalize. Holm remained committed to her gameplan of wrestling Vieira against the cage but was not having the same success in the clinch that she was earlier. Vieira nearly caught Holm in a choke in the process, and Holm looked like she was a second away from tapping out, but Vieira lost her positioning, and the fighters continued to wrestle against the cage. Holm appeared to be the stronger fighter, and racked up the majority of the control time, but was unable to complete a takedown. The corner of Morales was telling him to turn this fight into a brawl, knowing that he was in need of a finish. In the final minute of the fight, Martinez changed levels and took Morales to the ground, where the fight remained until the final horn sounded. Martinez was active with kicks to the body and lead leg of Morales early in the bout, and he caught Morales with a sharp jab as Morales flurried forward. A few minutes into the second round, a strong counter left hand from Medic dropped Morales hard, and as Morales attempted to make it back to his feet, he was dropped once more. Ricci was not terribly active from top position, however, Viana seemed content to fight from her back, and much like the first round, the fight remained in this position until the horn sounded. The leg kicks from Martinez had added up by the end of the round, and Morales was reacting to them poorly, reaching down low in an attempt to catch the kicks. I was impressed by Hooper’s performance here, as he was able to maintain that pace for the better part of three rounds, and by the time the fight reached its final round, Hooper’s significant edge in the cardio department allowed him to secure the late finish. Colares was able to defend the attempt, and he proceeded to land a series of kicks before Hooper was able to catch one, and from there Hooper was able to successfully bring the fight to the ground.

UFC Odds: Holly Holm vs. Ketlen Vieira prediction, odds and pick (ClutchPoints)

Taking a look at the odds, prediction, and pick for the main event of UFC Vegas 55 between Holly Holm and Ketlen Vieira.

The fight is inevitably going to start on the feet and Holm’s movement is going to make it tough for Vieira to get things on the ground. The way to beat Holm on the feet is to force her to lead the dance and that’s just not in the Brazilian’s game. It’s a tall order, but Holm is coming off of a long layoff and now is the time if the Brazilian wants to capitalize on a big opportunity. Holly Holm is the superior striker and a kickboxing match favors the former champion. Holm is still one of the best bantamweights in the world despite the injuries. Holly Holm is coming off of the longest layoff of her career.
