The Greens improved their primary vote in the electorate by more than 4 per cent, with candidate Janet Shelley gathering 14 per cent of the first-preference votes cast. In 2019, Mr Wilkie amassed 50 per cent of first-preference votes cast in the electorate with Labor candidate Ben McGregor placing second with 20.2 per cent of primary votes. Next placed was Labor candidate Simon Davis with 18.8 per cent of first-preference votes and Liberal candidate Will Coats with 15 per cent of first-preference votes. With all votes counted from the electorate's 43 booths on Saturday night, Mr Wilkie had attracted 45.8 per cent of the primary votes. Elected in 2010, Mr Wilkie was one of three independents that held the balance of power in the House of Representatives. Mr Wilkie was forced to spend the final week of the election campagin in isolation after contracting COVID-19 and addressed supporters earlier in the evening by video at a Hobart event.
