Winton Supercars: Van Gisbergen sets record practice pace (Motorsport.com)

Shane van Gisbergen broke the unofficial Supercars lap record at Winton as he topped the second and final practice session.

"We've changed a few parts on the car and everyone is working together. "We rolled out really, really fast, and every time we tried something we went slower. "[The car] was unreal," he said after the session.

Just the steering arm but that’s fine we’ll fix it and try again tomorrow.” On Sunday night, all of the drivers are pretty buggered from doing heaps of laps around here. He had no choice van Gisbergen. That is as vigorous as it gets.” There was contact between Turn 11 and Turn 12.” “He missed the apex on the second-last corner, I had a crack and then we came together on the last one. “I had to have something in the tank at the end, I knew he’d have a crack. Jess Yates called it “edge-of-your-seat racing” while in a later update van Gisbergen confirmed there was an issue with the steering arm but that it would be fixed for Sunday’s race. “Couldn’t quite get him,” van Gisbergen said of the late drama. “He just jams it down the inside, they interlock wheels and that is where it damaged the left front, it was not so much a case of getting out of it. Van Gisbergen took it to the final corner and made a bold dive, and made contact. I thought there was damage there, maybe it was just debris. Waters took the lead off the line and was pressured all the way in the 36-lapper.

Winton Supercars: Van Gisbergen storms to pole (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Shane van Gisbergen beat Cam Waters to pole position for the opening Supercars race at the Winton SuperSprint.

Perth was a tough one and I thought that was a one-off, but we didn't have a great test day here and that has continued in to today. "That time we thought was going to sneak in the 10 and we knew we'd go quicker in the next segment. We would have looked good if we got through." Let's see how we go in the race." Who knows." I didn't lose much, but it's still annoying.

Erebus Motorsport young gun Will Brown started the race with a fantastic jump off the line to move into second but his day was wrecked by a shocking pit-stop. The success erases painful memories from the last event when the 27-year-old crossed the line first in the second race at the Perth SuperSprint but was bumped to fourth due to a five-second time penalty for an incident with eventual race winner Will Davison. The Tickford Racing star, who missed out on a win in controversial circumstances in Perth at the start of the month, jumped pole-sitter van Gisbergen on the starting line and then kept the New Zealander at bay in the dying stages of the 36-lap race.

Supercars moves to stop repeat of McLaughlin shortcut debate (Speedcafe)

The Repco Supercars Championship has acted to stop a repeat of Scott McLaughlin's controversial rejoin seen last time out at Winton Motor Raceway.

“Went off the road and tried to get back and rejoin in the right position, but I was going to go the wrong way so I was damned if I did, damned if I didn’t. As for the Lap 1 incident, Coulthard copped a 15-second penalty while McLaughlin went unpenalised, having argued that attempts to rejoin at Turn 6 or Turn 7 would have resulted in him going the wrong way. Yesterday, drivers were issued a note by Supercars which read, “For any car that runs off the circuit at T5, it is expected that you rejoin in the area of T6-7.

Winton Supercars: Waters holds on in thrilling opener (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Cam Waters held off a determined challenge from Shane van Gisbergen to win the first of three Supercars races at Winton.

David Reynolds made solid gains from seventh on the grid to finish third, just three seconds behind the race winner. I love that kind of stuff." He's a really good racer, he knows where to place the car. I knew he would have a crack. "I knew [van Gisbergen] was probably a little bit quicker so I had to have something in the tank for the end. Waters won out at the start, a smart launch from the outside of the front row helping him clear van Gisbergen on the run to Turn 1.

Waters secures breakthrough Supercars win (The West Australian)

After leaving Perth feeling robbed of a race win, Ford's Cameron Waters has bounced back to claim Saturday's Supercars race at Winton Motor Raceway.

"I'm just absolutely pumped. The pair actually touched on the final turn, leaving van Gisbergen with damage to the front of his Commodore, but Waters held on for a relieving win for both driver and team. Having got the jump on pole-sitter van Gisbergen off the start line, Waters held onto the lead through the mandatory pit stops but had to come through a nailbiting final lap with the Holden star pushing him all the way.
