A spokesperson for the Australian Electoral Commission said "the website linked in the message is appropriately authorised, which meets our requirements for text messages". "In the interests of full transparency in the middle of an election campaign, the Labor Party was advised of this and a statement has been issued by the border protection authorities." Benjamin Moffitt, a senior lecturer in politics at the Australian Catholic University, said the text messages "reeked of desperation". A Liberal Party spokesperson confirmed the party was behind the message.
