The Australian election map has been lying to you (ABC News)

It's almost election day, which for you means it's time to vote, if you haven't already. And, for us, it means it's time to show you how Australia votes.

And although it's said to be ahead in the polls, Labor starts from behind. The Coalition is able to eke out a majority but with a whole lot of red mixed in among the blue and green. Again, you can see these seats are spread right across the country. Well, the first place to look is probably at the marginals. It's important to keep in mind that this represents the current state of play in terms of who holds which seats. Labor is on a tight margin in the seat of Solomon, and long-time Labor MP Warren Snowdon is retiring in Lingiari. And, for us, it means it's time to show you how Australia votes. And here are the seats in outer-metropolitan areas, essentially representing the sprawling suburbs of our big cities. Let's return to something we talked about a little earlier: that breakdown of seats in the city versus the country. However, it does provide a solid starting point, and an indication of who will need to win seats off whom in order to win the election. And it holds all five seats in the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. These are all of the seats that are inner-city or outer metropolitan, essentially those right in the middle of our largest cities and those in the sprawling suburbs surrounding them.
