Legendary Aussie TV veteran dies (NEWS.com.au)

An Australian radio and television journalist who worked at the ABC for more than 40 years has died.

She was raised in the small NSW country town of Murrurundi and in 2009 a portrait of Jones was hung in the National Portrait Gallery. Jones was a campaigner for Indigenous rights and won a stack of awards for her work in journalism. Jones published a number of books including a bestseller and was made an Officer of the order of Australia in 1988.

The ABC community is deeply saddened by the death of Caroline Jones AO, the hugely influential, respected and loved journalist, writer and broadcaster.

On behalf of everyone at the ABC I extend my sincere sympathies to Caroline’s family and friends. In 1997 she was voted one of Australia’s Living Treasures. Her other roles included presenting The Search for Meaning on Radio National. Like many ABC journalists of her generation, she helped to define Australian broadcast journalism.

Tributes have flowed for pioneering Australian journalist Caroline Jones who died on Friday aged 84.

“Even after her retirement, she would regularly make contact to cheer us on from the side lines. In a statement Australian Story paid tribute to the inspiring woman who made an influential impact across the Australian journalism industry, labelling her contribution to the program as “immeasurable”. Jones was also the first presenter for the ABC’s profile series Australian Story where she worked on the program from the show’s beginning in 1996 to her retirement in 2016.

Jones was the first female reporter for This Day Tonight in 1968 and later became the first female anchor of Four Corners, remaining in the chair from 1972-1981. Australia's media industry is mourning the death of veteran journalist and presenter Caroline Jones AO, who is being remembered as "a pioneer in journalism (and) a trailblazer for women".
