US PGA Championship: Cameron Smith starts in Tulsa as Rory ... (ABC News)

Cameron Smith stays in touch of the lead in the US PGA, as John Daly catches the eye with a strong early showing.

He picked up another shot on the seventh to climb to three-under, only to drop a shot on the brutal par-three eighth after finding a trap and being unable to get up and down. "I really like the golf course. He waited as long as he could but the ball would not drop, and he had to settle for par before rebounding with a birdie on the 11th with a laser approach to the par three.

How a 'mental reset' saved this pro's round (and chances) at the ... (Golf.com)

Cameron Smith shot a sloppy two-over 37 on his first nine at Southern Hills. Then he used a simple mental trick to get himself back on track.

“I knew I was hitting the ball well; just need to go out there and do it.” “It was just nice to see a putt go in,” he said. Smith tacked on a birdie at the 2nd, and made it a turkey with another at the 3rd. “A few” was selling himself a bit short. “It all just came together.” The Aussie was nine holes into the second major of 2022, and he’d made bogey or worse on a third of them — a double at the par-4 12th, and back-to-back bogeys at 16 and 17.

It has that Australian feel about it in a way, even though the grass is a little different. Another couple over on that back nine, I’m probably out of the golf tournament. “It’s nice to get through that stuff early in the week. So nice to rally.” Just like McIlroy, who made four back-nine birdies to lead all comers at five-under, Smith, who started his round on the 10th hole, dialled in on the run to the clubhouse and only a bogey on his second last hole cost him being in the top five. Cameron Smith likened opening-round conditions at the PGA Championship to a “summer’s morning in Brisbane” before saving himself from a battling start to burst into contention in Oklahoma.

Felt as though I’ve played some pretty good golf on my front nine, but unfortunately a couple times with gusts of wind and stuff like that, you can make some pretty quick bogeys and doubles around here if you’re not careful. T56 Cam Davis (72) T7 Cameron Smith (68) T7 Lucas Herbert (68) Three pars followed to round out his front nine before birdies at one and three – and a bogey at two – elevated Herbert back to the front page of the leaderboard. With a best finish in the majors of a tie for 31st at the 2020 US Open, Herbert was thrilled to have made such a strong start in one of the game’s showpiece events.
