Demons go 9-0 but feisty Eagles won't lose any fans with effort (AFL)

Fielding 21 of their premiership players against an Eagles team without 11 of its best 22, the Demons raced to an early lead before moving into cruise mode, ...

Waterman kicked the opening goal of the game and worked hard, but it was otherwise a slog for the forwards and he finished with nine touches and spent time up the ground. The result was already settled early in the third quarter when Melbourne captain Max Gawn ran with the flight of the ball and into ongoing traffic. With captain Luke Shuey, senior midfielders Elliot Yeo and Andrew Gaff, premiership captain Shannon Hurn and ruckman Nic Naitanui among the many sidelined players, leadership is in short supply for West Coast. Highlighting the Eagles' plight, Melbourne was only missing injured pair Christian Salem (knee) and Michael Hibberd (calf) from its premiership team. Dixon took one mark, while Liam Ryan struggled to get involved as the Eagles went forward 35 times to 59. Given the state of the game, it would have gone unnoticed if the ruckman had slowed to let his forwards take care of the looming contest, but he threw himself into it courageously and took a battering. Ryan will be scrutinised for a high bump on Jake Bowey, but will likely miss next week anyway with a hamstring injury.

Eagles to balance returning stars: Simpson (West Coast Eagles)

West Coast hopes to regain several key players for an away trip against Greater Western Sydney in round 10.

I know it's been disappointing so far this year, but we like their support, we appreciate the crowds." Sunday's 74-point loss was a record losing margin against undefeated Melbourne and marked the club's worst start to a season since 1989. We really appreciate their support.

Melbourne Demons belt West Coast Eagles by 74 points at Optus ... (PerthNow)

Melbourne's new-found love affair with Perth continued as they posted a 74-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium.

The Demons won the inside-50 count (20-4), clearances (14-4), and contested possessions (40-28) on the way to winning the quarter 6.5 (41) to 1.0 (6). Eagles duo Jamie Cripps and Bailey Williams produced special checkside goals in the third quarter. Clayton Oliver (28 disposals, seven clearances) and Christian Petracca (28 disposals, two goals) cleaned up in the middle, Andrew Brayshaw (24 possessions) provided plenty of rebound from defence, while Tom McDonald (four goals), Kysaiah Pickett (three), and Bayley Fritsch (three) cashed in up forward. The Demons kicked six goals to one in the opening term of Sunday’s match to set up the 16.16 (112) to 5.8 (38) victory in front of 27,488 fans. Max Gawn and Luke Jackson dominated in the ruck. Although Bowey was able to play on, the high nature of the hit and the fact Ryan ran past the ball to deliver the bump will count against him.

Tensions boil over in top v bottom clash; coach's half-time interview ... (Fox Sports)

Tom McDonald (four goals), Kysaiah Pickett (three) and Bayley Fritsch (three) did the damage up forward, while Christian Petracca booted 2.4 from 28 disposals ...

Demon Christian Petracca appeared to move on the mark, but the umpire called McGovern to play on. The only goal of the shocking first half came in the first four minutes of the match, with West Coast’s goalless second term the sixth quarter where they’ve failed to post a goal in 2022. Kysaiah Pickett sparked the Demons early in the contest against West Coast, with his blistering pace “setting the tone” for a dominant opening term. “Smart to run back to the middle of the ground when he can’t hear anyone,” commentator Jordan Lewis added. Petracca slotted the goal from the free kick and sent a message to the crowd, putting his index finger to his lips. “It was a four on two once the ball hit the deck in favour of the Dees,” Pavlich said. Despite the lean scoreboard, coach Adam Simpson said he “can’t ask for much more” after the Eagles restricted Melbourne to just one goal in the second. It’s the fourth time this season West Coast have headed into the main change with just one goal on the scoreboard, and the sixth time this season they’ve been held goalless in a quarter in 2022. West Coast showed good “early dare” against the reigning premiers to kick the first goal of the match. But it was all Melbourne from that point in the opening term, as the Demons kicked four straight goals on the back of West Coast’s “basic errors”. Jake Waterman got on the end of a “classy” passage of play through the corridor to give Eagles fans something to cheer about at Optus Stadium. After West Coast’s Jake Waterman kicked the first goal of the game, the Demons went on a rampage, outscoring West Coast 6.5 to 0.0 for the rest of the first term — and never looked back from there.

Chandler faces scrutiny over tackle as dominant Demons too good ... (The Age)

Melbourne's Kade Chandler is facing a suspension after his desperate tackle sent West Coast's Luke Foley into the league's concussion protocols, ...

For reasons known only to the Demons’ grand final star, Jackson kept in play a behind-bound shot from Tim Kelly, then placed Jayden Hunt under enormous pressure on the last line. The introduction of 50-metre penalties for breaches of the so called east-west rule was designed to encourage teams to play on. We just try and play the same way all the time consistently and things in our game are in check. Sign up for the Real Footy newsletter. Ryan is in hot water after electing to bump instead of tackle, and making head-high contact on Jake Bowey, who, fortunately, was able to play out the game. “The way we play, we don’t try and win by lots all the time. Despite another big loss, Simpson could not fault the Eagles’ effort. On the previous three occasions – 1955, 1956 and 2021 – they were premiers that year. Midfielder James Harmes is in doubt to face North Melbourne next week after being taken out of the game in the final term with hamstring tightness. Remarkably, the TAB had set the line at 71.5 points. Foley will be subjected to the league’s concussion protocols in another blow to the injury-ravaged Eagles’ threadbare playing stocks. It’s a chase-down tackle, he’s coming from a long way away at speed with a lot of momentum.

“Obviously we really feel for the lad (Foley), but to Kade’s credit he’s pretty upset about it. So all those things make it challenging when you don’t have your best team on the track.” “We’re obviously looking to play some youth, get to the draft, looking for a new identity as a club in terms of the way we want to play. We really appreciate their support. “I do know we’ve had some really good periods as a footy club and we’re just coming out of a really good era,” Simpson said. The paltry crowd of 27,488 was affected by a train shutdown in the build-up to the match.

Every AFL club's Indigenous guernsey for Sir Doug Nicholls Round ... (Fox Sports)

Round 10 and 11 of the 2022 AFL season sees the league celebrating Sir Doug Nicholls Round, which will see teams take to the field in specially designed ...

“It is a huge honour to be given the opportunity to design this guernsey. So, it was really special for me to be asked, and to be picked was even more exciting,” Pellegrini said. “This relates to the current changes of the football club. The design features five main meeting places and one large meeting place including pathways. Let’s hope Bunjil is flying over as they’re playing to bring us good spirit.” The white circles and lines represent the journey of the club while the yellow lines represent the interconnecting pathways. “I feel like I’ve got a sense of belonging now, which I’ve tried to tell through the artwork we’ve got on the jumper, that the boys get to run out with and wear with pride, and help represent the people, which it does.” So the Crows launched their design back in January, by Eastern Arrente man Pat Caruso. “From the water boy, to the coaches and the CEO, it’s all a team effort – from the ACT and Canberra, to the far reaches of Greater Western Sydney – you are all one team. “I wanted to tell the story of Wadawurrung country, the story of Djilang, and take people back on a journey to what the country was like prior to how we see the built environment today,” Eccles said. Relatively new appointments of a new president, a new coach and has been a dramatic change for the club, but an exciting new period for the club in growing it‘s new feathers and entering a new era,” the club said. “It was an honour to get the call up and an honour to represent my people on the guernsey for the club that I played for,” White said.

Melbourne v West Coast - The Stuff - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

The Dees hit the round and landed at Optus Stadium, where they were far too good for the West Coast Eagles. The Slugger has all The Stuff.

When you know you’re the best you are looking for a challenger, someone that drives you to be better. A trip to Giants Stadium next week against a GWS side that will be helmed by their interim coach after Leon Cameron stepped down, followed by a match up with the Western Bulldogs in WA, then a trip to Adelaide to play the Crows. Kade Chandler pinned the arms of Luke Foley in the tackle and thrust him into the ground. Oh look, another incident likely to draw the ire of the MRO. In years gone by, this was the perfect tackle. I will state that I had not seen much of him prior to this match, but if this is what he’s going to put out then the Eagles are onto a winner. Expect to see Liam Ryan’s name in a couple of news reports this week as he likely comes under scrutiny from the MRO. I love a good bump and this game actually featured a few of those and was a decently physical contest. To hold the reigning premiers to a solitary goal in the second quarter and only two goals in the third, after conceding six on the trot in the first and looking about as secure as the McAllister families alarm system in Home Alone. He was lightning with the footy, consistently released his teammates into space and never abandoned that attacking mindset to go through the corridor, that you need if you’re going to try and score against the Melbourne defence. The kick in the guts for Eagles fans was that this last burst put them back below North Melbourne’s percentage and remaining on the bottom of the ladder. But credit has to be given to the Eagles for not just accepting their fate and rolling over and taking a 100+ point loss. The Demons were on a 15 game winning streak coming into this game and have looked seemingly unbeatable for most of this season. Yes, Melbourne largely had control but the Eagles refused to get blown away, as they did in their loss to the Tigers. Of course, some inaccurate kicking also played a part.

A late bomb from stand-in captain Jeremy McGovern, his first goal in three years, wasn't enough for them to avoid their lowest home score, losing to ...

The longest VFL/AFL winning streak is Geelong’s 23 games in 1952-53 so the all-conquering Dees will have to knock over plenty of contenders if they want to create history. The challengers will then come thick and fast for the reigning champs, with Sydney (MCG) in round 12. With Dom Sheed also closing in on a return from his serious ankle injury, it would certainly be a bizarre sight to see the 2018 premiership midfielders running around together at WAFL level. The cupboard there is depressingly bare, with Xavier O’Neill and Luke Edwards both unavailable. This time they recorded their lowest ever score in a home game. Some of the Demons were enjoying a cigar in the middle of the stadium the last time they were over here and they could have brought them out again as they took control early.
