United States to host Rugby World Cup and pledges not to 'do a Qatar' (The Guardian)

The USA will stage its first ever men's Rugby World Cup in 2031 while Australia have been confirmed as the host nation for the 2027 competition.

While Australia were awarded the 2029 women’s World Cup, England – the favourites for this year’s competition – were confirmed as the hosts in 2025. Indeed, Gilpin revealed that not only would organisers seek to avoid a clash with the NFL but they could partner with franchises to increase engagement. And a lot of that will involve some really sort of grown-up discussions with professional leagues around the world and the impacts that could have on their seasons. That in turn, however, could cause problems for the dates of the 2030-31 season for domestic leagues and could see players running out in sweltering temperatures depending on the host cities. We’re not going to do a Qatar and just plonk it in the middle of a lot of other competitions. By comparison, the 2019 World Cup in Japan made around £350m from ticketing income.

While the men’s World Cup is five years away, Rugby Australia is fully cognisant of the fact they can’t drop the ball again. “Tonight’s World Rugby announcement will be the most significant moment in Australia rugby’s history winning RWC 1991 that put Rugby on the map in Oz,” two-time World Cup winner Tim Horan tweeted. In a landmark moment for the game, Australia was confirmed in Dublin on Thursday as the host of the men’s World Cup in 2027 but the country will also host the 2029 women’s World Cup. It will be the first time Australia has hosted a rugby World Cup in almost a quarter of a century, when Jonny Wilkinson kicked England to glory on a November night in 2003 and started the game’s decline. His Wallaroos counterpart, Shannon Perry, meanwhile said the World Cup announcement can be the springboard for women’s rugby in the country. US to host men's and women's Rugby World Cups for first time (wflx)

The sport is breaking new ground by taking its most prestigious tournament to North America, with World Rugby regarding it as an area of untapped potential ...

The men’s World Cup is returning to Australia for the first time since 2003. As it did successfully for Japan, World Rugby will pour coaching expertise into the Eagles and look to give them more tests to improve. A competitive, perhaps quarterfinal-bidding team, would crucially be necessary for the Eagles and the World Cup to cut through the considerable noise that is U.S. sports. Being able to take that step is just the beginning.” The 2027 tournament will be the 40th anniversary of Australia and New Zealand hosting the first Rugby World Cup in 1987. “Australia will become the center of the rugby world over the next decade,” he said, “and that is incredibly exciting.” USA Rugby already has some experience. The men’s Rugby World Cup is regarded in some parts of the world as the third biggest sporting event, after the soccer World Cup and the summer Olympics. It is being viewed as a chance to rejuvenate rugby in the country as the World Cups come after the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia in 2025, bringing much-needed revenue to its governing body, Rugby Australia, that was badly hit by the pandemic. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit up in green and gold after Australia was awarded the men’s World Cup in 2027 and the women’s tournament in 2029. For the first time, World Rugby used a streamlined bid process to enable it to announce the hosts of all the World Cups from 2025-33, for both men and women. The Rugby World Cup will be staged in the U.S. for the first time after the U.S. was voted on Thursday as the host of the men’s event in 2031 and the women’s tournament two years later.

'Huge opportunity': Australia to host 2027 and 2029 Rugby World Cups (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Australia will host the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the 2029 Women's Rugby World Cup after the bids were rubber-stamped by World Rugby.

Australia grabbed that opportunity without hesitation and Gilpin announced the “preferred candidate” status for the 2029 World Cup when he toured Australia with World Cup officials. Australia’s bid team adjusted their bid accordingly and successfully secured ‘preferred candidate’ status at meetings with World Rugby in November. The 2027 World Cup will feature 20 nations and 48 matches over seven weeks and be played at between eight and 10 venues. RA forecasts the dual World Cups will have a massive benefit to not only Australian rugby, but the Australian economy. The venue infrastructure is genuinely world-class. The interest we’ve had from country regions and non-core rugby states has been fantastic.”

How game-changing Cup bid ended rugby's years of living ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

After two years of living dangerously, McLennan has secured the catalyst for a rugby renaissance. It was clear, for me certainly, that the Rugby World Cup in 2027 was a big goal to shoot for.” With a week’s notice, World Rugby let RA know they were overhauling the tournament hosting model, moving to a joint-venture model similar to the way the FIFA World Cup operated. By the end of March, federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg outlined support for the 2027 and 2029 women’s World Cup bids in the budget. Within a week of starting as chairman, McLennan unveiled a bid advisory board dripping with credibility and spanning business, politics and rugby. To everyone outside the bid team, Australia was a sure thing. Bringing a third World Cup to Australian shores was already a three-year-old goal by the time McLennan and his new chief executive, Andy Marinos, took the reins. Gore’s headlining speech sold out and sparked the trend for high profile individuals to present at Cannes. It was also a move which, one year later, helped McLennan poach industry titan Tony Granger from Saatchi & Saatchi to ratchet up Y&R’s creative turnaround. “There was a lot of infighting within the organisation and outside it, with the fan base and ex-players. In his Y&R days in New York, McLennan personally pitched former US presidential candidate Al Gore to present to a room full of advertising types at the industry’s annual awards do in Cannes. Gore had made his documentary An Inconvenient Truth the year prior and McLennan wanted something - someone - to re-launch Y&R as a creative force. McLennan dusted off the idea and put it in prime position on the mantelpiece. “I looked at 2027 (World Cup) and thought ‘that’s something we’ve got to win’.”

“It’s a really good stepping stone to launch for the future,” the 49-year-old former scrumhalf said. With a lucrative visit from the British and Irish Lions in 2025, Rugby Australia has a unique opportunity to rebuild the sport from the grassroots up in coming years. An expected windfall of up to $60 million from the tournaments could go a long way to fixing the financial problems at governing body Rugby Australia (RA), which lost $27 million in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and another $4.5 million last year.

Rugby Australia to lock away $100m 'future fund' from World Cup ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

“To have the 2027 and ’29 World Cup here in Australia is something that’s going to be very special. World Rugby will be more swayed by the size of a deal it can cut with the NSW, Victorian or WA government, and the capacity to run a festival around the final venue. They have the capacity and they have the stadium infrastructure to deliver that. And it will play a huge role in where the 2027 Rugby World Cup final will be played, too. So if we can have that money locked away and investible, then I think we will be in great shape come 2027.” World Rugby will make the final call, likely by the end of this year.
