Next year, there will be a Eurovision Canada, where entries from the country’s three territories and 10 provinces will compete in an offshoot of the original. Their song, “ Give That Wolf a Banana,” has the pair wearing wolf masks, with backing dancers in yellow morph suits. In the past, when a country has been unable to host, another has stepped in. Its song, “ Stefania,” is an ode to the mother of one of the band members. The Swedish entrant this year is Cornelia Jakobs, who sings “ Hold Me Closer,” a warm and emotional pop track that builds with each subsequent verse. “It is a very different sort of mechanism — there isn’t another show where performance happens and there isn’t a critique right after,” she said. Russia could not take part, the union said in a statement, because the country’s inclusion “would bring the competition into disrepute.” In Britain, the comedy host Graham Norton has become renowned for his reactions and quips. Turin, in Italy, hosts this year after the rock band Maneskin triumphed in 2021. The scores from the national juries are tallied first, then the fan votes are announced, act by act, starting with the countries that received the lowest jury points. Israel debuted in 1973, for example, and Australia has been taking part since 2015.

Eurovision 2022 running order looks great for UK entry Sam Ryder (Metro)

The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 running order has been confirmed and UK star Sam Ryder has reason to celebrate a favourable draw for Turin.

Over the last two decades, the number 19 has also provided two champions – Azerbaijan in 2011 and Greece in 2005 – while 17 (Sweden in 2012, Serbia in 2007 and Finland in 2006) is the only number to result in more winners. He’ll be the 22nd artist to take to the stage as part of the competition, nestled in between Australia’s Sheldon Riley, who is performing Not The Same, and Poland’s Ochman with River. The grand final takes place on Saturday night (May 14) in Turin, Italy with UK entry Sam Ryder hoping to shine in the midst of all the wonderfully over the top glitz and glamour.

This year, Achille Lauro -- a man who takes his stage name from a famously hijacked cruise ship -- picks up the mantle for the smallest country in the competition. But this is still Eurovision, and it is still weird -- so casual viewers tuning in exclusively to shake their heads and tut won't be let down. "Stefania," sung in Ukrainian, is a tribute to Psyuk's mother, who still lives in the western city of Kalush from which the band takes its name. (Though he's still got a way to go to beat last year's winners, who were ultimately cleared of taking cocaine on air following a viral video that sparked an investigation by organizers.) The 2020 edition was canceled, and last year's took place with crowd restrictions. "I think it's all about the deep hydration." They most closely resemble a TikTok-ified Daft Punk, had the legendary French pair hired David Lynch as their artistic director and hit the kids' parties circuit. Italy could clinch the crown for a second consecutive year if hometown heroes Mahmood and Blanco deliver. Organizers banned Russia from the contest in February, 24 hours after an initial, widely criticized decision to allow it to take part. Psyuk, meanwhile, volunteers to find internally displaced Ukrainians shelter and organizes the transportation of food and medicines. Kalush, meanwhile, sailed through Tuesday's semifinal and elicited wild cheers from the crowd when they came onstage. "As we speak, our country and our culture is under threat.

This year's Eurovision finals are Saturday and the beloved song contest is being held in Italy after Maneskin's win last year.

Måneskin are expected to perform a new song, "Supermodel," during the interval of the finals. For the second year in a row, Peacock, NBC's streaming service, will air Eurovision live, including the semi-finals. The EBU includes a few countries in West Asia, including Israel, and even countries in North Africa like Morocco. In 2015, Australia was invited to perform, since the country has broadcast Eurovision every year since 1983. The event is a way to bring together European countries beyond politics—though sometimes politics sneaks in. The top 20 semifinalists are then sent to the finals to compete. The Eurovision Song Contest has been running since 1956, and has taken place every year—except 2020, due to COVID restrictions.

Eurovision 2022 finalists: the best performers to look out for at this ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

An indie singer washing her hands; men in wolf masks; rappers accompanied by traditional woodwind instruments… It can only mean one thing.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy of novelty songs, Subwoolfer features two men dressed as wolves and a DJ in a silver spacesuit. It also pulls off the difficult task of being genuinely emotive whilst splicing in some agreeable Eurovision lunacy – such as when rapper Oleh Psiuk cedes the spotlight to a blistering solo on the sopilka, a traditional Ukrainian woodwind instrument. So wacky it’s almost profound, it is obviously impossible to hate a banger with lyrics such as “I want your grandma, yum, yum”. Peak Eurovision bonkers and a track sure to trigger flashbacks for years to come. As the name indicates, River is a big, blustery weepy –and, if not the most original song to make the final, it delivers a payload of emotion. Tackiness and grandstanding are part of Eurovision. Yet amidst the carnival atmosphere a pure, understated moment can cut as cleanly as a blade. This year the task of blowing our socks off is entrusted to Krystian Ochman, a Polish-America singer who grew up in Massachusetts and placed first in The Voice of Poland two years ago. Whether the best or worst thing at Eurovision 2022 is hard to say – but it is undoubtedly the most memorable. Eurovision used to be cool (sort of). And then it was naff. With Ireland cast once again into Eurovision purgatory following the semi-final elimination of Brooke Scullion, Sweden has another opportunity to clock up a record-equalling seven wins. The 2020 grand final begins at 8pm on Saturday May 14, on BBC One. Here is a definitive (ish) list of the 10 songs to watch out for. With the second semi-final done and dusted, the 20 acts joining the UK’s Sam Ryder and the other representatives of the “big five” finalists of Germany, Italy, Spain and France has now been confirmed. Either the new Doctor Who has turned out a lot weirder than anyone anticipated or it’s the final of Eurovision 2022.

From the planet's oldest act to a dance routine with a hand basin, get ready for music's maddest night.

"I don't know if I'm going to be able to run around, but I'm just going to enjoy not being in the competition," says David. The song's transformation is evident in the staging too. Sheldon's costume weighs 40kg - thanks to the 200,000 Swarovski crystals and 90,000 Swarovski pearls stitched into the fabric. "I don't know why, but my body tells me, 'you need to rest' and I just go somewhere quiet and take a nap for 15 minutes, and then I wake up like a new person." Naturally, it's a favourite among fans in the arena. But the band are ready to reclaim the stage that brought them to an international audience. It's about revelling in the strange, beautiful, passionate and peculiar performances that the continent (and Australia) puts forward. An ode to personal hygiene, it poses the eternal question: "What's the secret behind Meghan Markle's healthy hair? Now, I know what you're going to say: "But surely Eurovision is all about politics". And to an extent, you're right. Or so the story goes. But several studies - here's the most recent one - show that political voting rarely affects the overall winner.

Eurovision 2022: All about the Grand Final (Eurovisionworld)

Tonight we know the winner of Eurovision Song Contest 2022! 25 countries will compete for the trophy, and the honour of hosting Eurovision Song Contest 2023 ...

The juries' points are given by a spokesperson from each country, where only the 12 points will be announced orally. The trio present a few of those and a dancing crew invades the stage for a routine inspired on that. All televotes from the 40 countries are bundled and announced for each receiving country. This time, the Eurovision voice judges the fashion choices of a few previous acts including Nonstop ( Portugal 2006), Milan Stanković ( Serbia 2010) amongst others. It is time for Laura Pausini. The Italian legend is also in charge of opening the show's Grand Final as she delivers a medley of some of her hits ("Lo Canto", "La Solitudine") and in every song there's a new outfit. That's how the Grand Final of Eurovision 2022 begins: on the roads of the host city. After some fun jokes, a new video segment follows with the best moments of the second Semi-final that took place last Thursday. We're ready for the flag parede: there are dancers with light sticks and a rainbow behind the black structure. The 66th edition of Eurovision Song Contest ends tonight. 25 countries will compete for the trophy, and the honour of hosting Eurovision Song Contest 2023. As we build towards the climax, Stefan runs around the stage with a hop, skip and a jump. The title of the song isn’t directly translatable to English. According to the songwriter, it would roughly translate to “with the sun getting higher every day”. The warmth of the sun comes through in the staging, with plenty of amber and gold lights used throughout. The heavy vocoder and stuttering synths work to produce something of real electropop excellence. “Die Together” has shades of Lorde and Birdy, resulting in a magical number with a modern goth-pop kiss. The lyrics thank her for the selfless care and unconditional love she offered with stern but soft hands. S10 — real name Stien den Hollander — has been very open about her past struggles with depression and auditory hallucinations. The ambiguity of sexuality, connection and intention doesn’t limit the potential audience. She said: “I think we’ve all been at a snapping point, where it felt like there’s no way out and that the entire world is just crumbling down around you. The sheets represent the anxiety and inner turmoil that keeps her up at night — she’s literally trapped inside her thoughts. The trio of Ahez take their name from a mythological figure and the magic continues with their lyrics, which tell the story of a woman in the forest dancing for the devil. The Swiss act’s staging features imagery of a young boy playing with a paper aeroplane, and a broken heart graphic projected on Marius’ face. WRS, a former dancer, flaunts his best moves in “Llámame” (that’s call me) And his backing dancers definitely pick up the phone, throwing shapes and slaying the stage with their sensual choreography.

When he sings the word "thinking," he points to his head. It's fabulousness for the sake of fabulousness, and it has nothing to do with the real world. Plus, it's at once about the mothers of Ukraine — and Ukraine as the mother of its people. This is chill, unforced, and subtle — not words commonly associated with Eurovision. But there's a huskiness to Maro's voice that adds layers just when the song cries out for them, and her dexterous phrasing nudges the harmonies along, allowing them to complicate in interesting ways with each verse. It's not the maudlin wallow it could be though — it's saved by the staging, in which he's surrounded by a cavorting bunch of ... river spirits, maybe? The bop to end all bops! The bop of bops! This year's entry is in Breton, the regional language of Brittany. So, for the first time in Eurovision history, the competition does not include a song in French. Fulenn means "spark," and this trippy, catchy, spooky number is full of imagery of flames and souls and dark forest rites. I'm always surprised by how strong a showing the genre of American Country Music makes in Eurovision each year, but this sweet, simple ditty is serving serious Kacey Musgraves. Might not be enough going on here for it to break out from a crowded, and much showier, pack, though. A pompadoured prince of patter, Weir knows and loves Eurovision enough to supply newcomers with useful context and history while tossing out in-jokes for the die-hards. This infinity-waterfall effect might be an attempt to evoke the world-famous fountains of Rome, or it might be just there to look cool. The Eurovision Song Contest is back, replete with the requisite amounts of fire and lasers and smoke and sequins.
