The second half-hour session was dedicated to the Am drivers, Kenny Habul leading the way early in the #75 Mercedes with a 2m10.223s. They were then denied the opportunity to go quicker by a red flag, prompted by a car stopping at The Chase with two minutes to go, that was ultimately the end of the session. The #75 Mercedes ended up second thanks to a 2m04.908s from reigning Bathurst 12 Hour winner Jules Gounon late in the session. “You are one lap down the race is over. “From a Pro-Am perspective the only thing you’ve got to be really careful of… “I don’t know if it’s worth to take so many risks in the beginning, just take the one lap down and then you have the wave-by and you are back in the game. “Because if one gets through they have a huge advantage until Conrod Straight. I understand the predicament because you really want to get the lapped cars out of the way.” “The whole idea is that we get to hour nine or 10 and we’ve got 10 cars on the lead lap and all the Ams have done their time, the pros get in and we have a race to the end.” you wouldn’t want the pro guys in the last hour in a train of one-to-10 that are trying to win the race with all the pros catching you across the top.
The conclusion was met that the engine should be replaced, with the decision to take the #91 Mercedes-AMG GT3 off-site to perform the job safely on a car hoist.
“For these GT cars it’s basically the safest thing to be on the hoist to do an engine change; we could find ways to do it but it would probably not be the best. “We were trying to make it for qualifying but I think it’s going to be quite tight to be able to do that. “We had a lot of communication with Germany trying to resolve [the issue] but at the end it was the decision being the safest to do an engine replacement,” O’Young told Speedcafe.com.
The three support categories at the Bathurst 12 Hour each had a race on day one at Mt Panorama with Zach Bates, Jack Le Brocq and Tom Hayman the winners.
David Schulz would have joined him on the front row but was penalised for impeding and would start further back. Heinrich took the lead but was passed by Hayman on the final lap. Round 4 would be over three races rather than the usual four and series leader Hayman (Mustang) won the first.

Driving the KTM will be David Crampton, Trent Harrison, Glenn Wood and his brother, current Porsche Carrera Cup front runner Dale Wood. M-Motorsport last competed in the Bathurst 12 Hour in 2019, winning the GT4 class with the KTM X-Bow with Glenn Wood as part of the line up. The Koundouris brothers have two class victories at the 12 Hour to their name, taking Class B (Carrera Cup) honours in 2015 and Am honours in 2018, while Stokell has been racing as far back as the 1980’s, with three Australian Driver’s Championships (for Australia’s top open-wheel category) from 1994-96. Stephen and Brenton combined for fourth in last year’s GTWC Australia Championship, and along with Ben Barker won the Pro-Am category in the 12 Hour in 2020. The Invitational Class returns for the Bathurst 12 Hour, featuring some crowd favourites as well as a notable Bathurst debut. Joining him is current Erebus Motorsport Supercars driver Will Brown and his Bathurst 1000 Co-Driver from last year, Jack Perkins. Brown set the Mountain alight during qualifying for the Bathurst 1000 last year to take a surprise provisional pole, and remains one of Supercars’ most exciting young prospects. Tony Bates returns to the Bathurst 12 Hour in his #24 Audi, alongside two current Repco Australian Supercars drivers in the form of David Reynolds and Cameron Waters. Bates has been a stalwart of Australian GT racing, with entries in the 12 hour dating back to 2015. Tse has been racing in Britsh GT, and with plenty of experience around the Macau Guia circuit, will hope that his experience of close barriers has him well prepared for Bathurst. Brett Hobson is an experienced campaigner in the GTWC Australia series, running the Nissan GTR. While he hasn’t yet had a stellar result at the 12 Hour, Hobson did take an overall victory at The Bend last year in changing conditions. The Audi challenge is completed by the #9 Team Hallmarc entry of Marc Cini alongside Dean Fiore and Lee Holdsworth, and the #17 of Team BRM, with Mark Rosser being joined by Nick Percat and Joey Mawson. Cini has raced at the 12 Hour every year of the GT3 era (since 2011) except 2012, but is possibly most famous for being tagged into a spin at Metal Grate while being lapped by the leaders and miraculously not hitting a wall. Pairing up with 2017 Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds (who has raced the 12 hour 6 times) and back-to-back podium sitter Cameron Waters gives the team a great shot at victory. Ross himself has credentials at the Bathurst 12 hour, taking Silver-Cup honours with Martin Kodric and Dominic Storey in 2020 for 59Racing in a McLaren 720s. The Bathurst 12 Hour also doubles as Round 2 of the GT World Challenge Australia championship, while Audi, Mercedes Benz, Lamborghini and Porsche are represented for IGTC Manufacturer points.

Track action for the LIQUI MOLY Bathurst 12 Hour starts on Friday with four practice sessions, two dedicated to Bronze drivers only, culminating in the first night practice session in the event’s history. The TGRA 86 Series has become a breeding ground for driving talent in a spec-racing formula. The Aussie Racing cars are built around a spec, purpose-built space-frame chassis, with a Yamaha 1.3L 125bhp engine, weighing in at around 500kg and capable of speeds over 200km/h. The cars have a freedom of body styles, replicating the current Repco Supercars models, as well as body styles modelled after common Australian consumer vehicles. Bathurst resident Matilda ‘Tilly’ was subjected to schoolyard, social media and electronic bullying, and tragically too her own life in February of this year, at only 15 years old. Alex Davison, also driving the #222, also has family ties to the PCFA, with his father Richard having battled the illness. But not long after that the session ground to a halt after Theo Koundouris hit the wall in his MPC Audi at Reid Park.
