Review: Quintessential Mahesh Babu outing Sarkaru Vaari Paata ... (Telangana Today)

Hyderabad: With all the fanfare and a pinch of controversy on affordability, this Mahesh Babu outing is quintessential Mahesh Babu well dressed, simple.

The likes of Subba Raju, Tanikella Bharani and the power house Nadiya are reduced to props. Eyewitness to his poor parents committing suicide, he is the rags to riches, Vizag to Vegas success story. Keerthy Suresh as the romantic interest to the new Banking Ombudsman brings the status of the stereotypical Telugu heroine a few notches further down. The drama is painstakingly contrived and laboriously built on the shoulder of the matinee idol and his persona. The film could at least have been shorter – that too is not to be since the exhaustive templates of Mahesh Babu have to be renewed, reiterated, repeated and reemphasized. Typical of the production process, the hero is an amazing success story.

Sarkaru Vaari Paata Movie Review: Mahesh Babu does the heavy ... (India Today)

Director Parasuram Petla's Sarkaru Vaari Paata starring Mahesh Babu, Keerthy Suresh and Samuthirakani follows a done-to-death template.

Composer S Thaman and cinematographer Madhie’s camerawork are impeccable in the film. While it is done with good intentions, the impact is far from what it was intended. It is the same with Sarkaru Vaari Paata. In fact, it is Keerthy’s uncle (Subbaraju) and dad, Rajendranath, who let Keerthy be. In short, Parasuram Petla’s Sarkaru Vaari Paata is a story about bank defaulters. Mahesh AKA Mahi runs a loan agency in the US (don’t ask how), after he loses his parents at a young age. While the actor recently made headlines for his ‘Bollywood cannot afford me’ comment, his Telugu film, Sarkaru Vaari Paata hit the theatres today, May 12.

As a result, you get a film just as biased as the system it is trying to question. By writing him so poorly that all it takes for him to have a significant change of heart is a speech full of information and insight that he probably already has. The scene with Nadiya's character and the fruits she forgets to take with her is a prime example of his dialogue delivery. For a brute to insult a man, he has to go through the man's wife. As a young boy, who's yet to grow up into the worldly man he eventually becomes, he asks his Math teacher (Tanikella Bharani) what 'Sarkaru vaari paata' means. For the bad guy to scare someone, he has to kidnap the woman in the family. Kalavathi—Keerthy Suresh is capable of much more—is a spoilt brat of a woman. Is she a gambling addict? While the film's first half is light and fun, despite the cringy dialogue—apparently, following women without their knowledge is a 'boy thing', the second half reeks of simplistic snobbery associated with any film naive enough to pretend that it can solve a systemic issue in less than thirty minutes as its hero is strong and handsome. Even if his fanbase is substantial, his life is a far cry from the one lived by most of his fans. But the film's writer needs to understand the issue beyond the SparkNotes version so that it has some value and gravity. Mahesh Babu, the star, is a reserved man who's lived a life of privilege.

And it has robbed the movie of a sense of stability even though the subject that it discusses has a sense of urgency and reliability. He’s determined to get his money back, regardless of the kind of muscle and political power that Rajendranath wields. He decides to fly to India and collect the money from Kalavathi’s father Rajendranath (Samuthirakani). Rajendranath is a big shot in Vizag and has all the central ministers in his pocket. Of course, if you are a hardcore fan of Mahesh Babu and him shouting, “I am a whale” (although, “I am a (loan) shark” would have sounded more punchy and appropriate) is enough to meet your expectations of entertainment, then you are in for a treat. And his heart is broken into a thousand pieces when he finds out that Kalavathi wears modern clothes and goes to pubs, drinks and gambles. One morning, the young Mahesh wakes up to his father and mother hanging from the roof of his house as they couldn’t stand to see their farmland get auctioned by the government.

However, it could have done away with close to 15 minutes of footage in the second half, which bogs down the pace. After a point, it is quite hard to believe that Keerthy is indeed Samuthirakani's daughter in the film, as there are hardly any impactful scenes to establish the relationship. The first half somehow manages to bridge its shortcomings, but in the second half, there is some dry air in how the director approaches the core theme of the film and communicates his viewpoint. The director maintains his hold on the happy and comic portions of Sarkaru Vaari Paata; there is a peculiar and likable track between Mahesh and Keerthy's characters in the first half that blooms nicely. While Mahesh's character has a sense of clarity, the connections between banks, EMIs and frauds is not smoothly indicated and only gains momentum during the climax sequence. However, he later learns that Kalaavathi is a gambler, and the money she's taken from him has been spent at a casino.

Of course, the young and the old can’t be compared, but there’s a silly point that Mahesh misses here – he also resorts to hurting his clients. What’s the difference between a heartless recovery agent and the protagonist then? He takes the lender on a short trip and gives a ringside view of the life he lives. And an hour later, he beats up a bunch of recovery agents for harassing a middle-aged couple. And some of its logical bullets are so empty that they make no sense at all – Mahesh separates a woman and a man while they’re kissing to ask for the money that he’s owed and chases after the guy when he takes to his heels. What’s the need for a movie made of this scale to have a villain who’s just another corporate monster?
