Cameron is expected to coach against Carlton on Sunday in a farewell game before vacating the club’s coaching box. Cameron at the start of 2014 took the Giants’ coaching reins from the legendary Kevin Sheedy. He led them to the 2019 Grand Final, two preliminary finals and two semi-finals but, ultimately, not a premiership. A senior Giants source described the move to The Age as an “amicable separation”.

Giants boss Cameron resigns, will coach farewell game (AFL)

The Giants are on the hunt for a new senior coach after Leon Cameron tells the club he will finish up after Sunday's game against Carlton.

Long-time assistant coach Mark McVeigh will coach the club for the remainder of the season as the Giants seek the third senior coach of their 11-season history in the AFL. Cameron will join Giants CEO Matthews and chairman Tony Shepherd at a media conference in Sydney at 11am AEST. Months of discussions between Cameron and the Giants have resulted in an amicable parting, with Cameron advising club staff and players of his exit on Thursday morning.

The 49-year-old Cameron took over at the club in 2014, replacing Giants inaugural coach Kevin Sheedy. Cameron's contract is due up at the end of 2022 after he signed a two-year extension in 2020, and he and GWS had put off discussions until the end of the season. GWS coach Leon Cameron has announced he is quitting his role, eight games into his ninth season at the club.
