In 1953, it was Dorothy Sutherland of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare who proposed to the erstwhile president to proclaim Nurses Day in October. However, his proposal was not approved. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the English social reformer, statistician and founder of modern nursing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the nurses on the occasion of International Nurses Day. Prime Minister tweeted, "Nurses play a vital role in keeping our planet healthy. International Nurses Day is a day to reiterate our appreciation to all nursing staff for their exceptional work even in the most challenging of situations."
