Film Review: Firestarter plays accordingly to Stephen King's more ... (the AU review)

When Stephen King published Firestarter in 1980 it was celebrated for its complex, character driven storyline, accolades that shouldn't have really come as ...

Being a Blumhouse production though at least allows Thomas to indulge in the benefits of an adult rating – it’s been slapped with an MA15+ classification here – and for a film that feels as if it’s going to solely present its violent content as variations on being burned, it has some fun with the gory possibilities. Much like Barrymore proved the mainstay reasoning for the original film, Armstrong similarly delivers here, managing a performance that balances the emotion and terror in equal measure. With that and The Shining both being adapted into successful (and widely acclaimed) cinematic works, it only made sense that King’s bibliography be continually looked at for filmic inspiration.

John Carpenter's Firestarter Score Has Some Fun Stephen King ... (Cinema Blend)

John Carpenter's score for the new remake of Stephen King's Firestarter is an Easter Egg unto itself.

Because it’s not something Keith Thomas ever brought up, it’s unclear if John Carpenter did use any score ideas from his first go-round with the source material – but either way what he has created is fantastic. As captured in the video at the top of this article, I asked Thomas if he talked with John Carpenter at all about the original version of Firestarter that he was going to make back in the early 1980s. but it never actually ended up being a part of the conversations that he had with the legendary filmmaker.

I had this character, and I had plenty of time to think about the character and to build a backstory for him, in terms of how he got to where he is at the end, what he is most frightened of, which, in that case, is that he could unleash a monster that could pretty much destroy the world. I had the one character, and I had a lot of time to think about it. I can't tell you too much, but I can tell you that the big thing for me was getting to play that character again and getting to play that character with Deborah Jo Rupp playing my wife Kitty. Those two things were enough to entice me to want to do the project. And so it was finally getting to him, it was starting to make him into the crazy man that everybody kept saying he was. It was good, and it was comfortable working with Gloria. And as far as developing the character, it seemed to me very clear where he was at that point. And then if you take the combination of Stephen King and on top of that, you have a really good script ... I thought, "I like the script and it is from the Stephen King. This could be really big." I'll just say one other thing about That '90s Show, and that is that we've had some tests. So for him, she's no longer a little girl, she is a creature that, and he's to blame, which makes him angry at himself, but also angry at people that won't accept it. Well, they sent me the script, and I read the whole script, and I thought this, "This can be really good." I would have to say that I didn't really think about that aspect of it. I was really quite surprised that I hadn't done one before, but when I went back and looked at it, apparently I haven't. So I was happy to be involved in it. The new Firestarter lands in theaters and on Peacock on May 13th.

Zac Efron, John Carpenter's synths, and some neat visual heat motifs aren't enough to make the reboot of Firestarter feel scary or tense, says Eliza Janssen ...

A typically inexpensive title from Blumhouse that seems to have scorched through three directors mid-production, Firestarter tries nobly to make the most of its raw elements. There’s a fire extinguisher on the mantelpiece, Wi-Fi is forbidden so that the ominous NSI doesn’t locate the family, and dad runs Charlie through an anxiety-calming sensory checklist when things start to heat up. Compared to King and De Palma’s brilliant, other tale of pyrokinetic puberty Carrie, it feels especially limp, not finding the sad spark in its parental dynamic that made that film ache so much.

But even this is rather bland and he ironically sucks most of the excitement out of the scenes in which he appears. The most powerful of the bunch is known as an Energy Sink, capable of stealing the powers of others. She once again becomes a pawn for the male characters, a target of Rainbird and his group of psychic boys who see her as more of an object of fetishization than an actual human being. It’s an intriguing premise and the story of an adult pyrokinetic with an ax to grind promises to be spectacular. In order to save Vincent, Charlie must return to the place of her creation and face off against Rainbird once and for all. The mysterious serum gave him the ability to know the past, present, and future all at once, a power that sounds intriguing, but mostly just leads to him deadpanning lines like, “You’re about to get everything you’ve always wanted. It’s an exciting prospect and though King has returned to the stories of a few of his child characters, most notably Danny Torrance (The Shining) and Jack Sawyer (The Talisman), he has never written about Charlie as an adult. Her nights are spent in fiery nightmares reliving her escape from the Shop and the deaths of her parents. But authenticity is not the only glaring issue with the character. Under the guise of a class action lawsuit, a young office drone named Vincent (Danny Nucci) is sent to track her down and inadvertently turns her into malevolent agent John Rainbird (Malcolm McDowell). A character in King’s novel, he betrayed Charlie’s trust when she was a child and suffered devastating burns as a result. Of all of Stephen King’s literary children, none burns as brightly as Charlie McGee. She is the main character in his 1980 novel Firestarter and arguably his most powerful protagonist. Their daughter inherited their genetic modifications leading to her amazing power, an ability The Shop would do anything to get their hands on.

Why Blumhouse's Firestarter Remake Is Rated R (CBR)

The original Firestarter had an R rating, and the new version, which is even closer to the Stephen King novel, promises to be even darker.

Thus, it's logical that the new movie will take advantage of improved movie special effects to showcase some truly scorching death sequences. The violent content in that film, as well as that of fellow PG-rated feature Gremlins sparked the creation of the PG-13 rating, and it's arguable that the original Firestarter would receive this rating today. Here's why the new version of Firestarter is rated R, and how it actually complies with the film's supposed fidelity to the book.

Kurtwood Smith On Firestarter, That '90s Show, Star Trek And More ... (Looper)

Smith is the definition of a veteran character actor. He got his first big screen break as the gleefully sadistic Clarence Boddicker in "RoboCop" (1987) before ...

We have two of the original creators of the show, Bonnie and Terry Turner, and then Gregg Mettler, who's one of the creators of "That '90s Show" and was a writer on "That '70s Show." He was a very young writer and cut his teeth on that show, so he's always had a very affectionate feeling towards it. I was the president of the universe, or whatever — president of the galaxy, I guess. So Nick [Meyer], the director, who's the reason I was in the movie to begin with — I'd just done another film with him — was like, "Okay, Bill, could you come over here? The tests that they've done and the reactions to the first two episodes have been great. My kids were around when I was playing that role initially, but then, on top of that, my grandkids loved the show, and not just because their grandfather was in it. The other guys in the gang, we hung out together, we went to dinner together. Number two would be getting to play opposite Debra Jo Rupp as Kitty Forman. Then beyond that, the fact that there are original people from the show in terms of writers — the creators of this show, three of them were from the original show. I find "Star Trek" very much in that vein, where the characters are a little bit larger than life. There wasn't as much of it when I was a kid, but there was plenty. The only reason he didn't put a bullet in his own head is the outside chance that he might, in some way, be able to help her. After I got the part, I read the book right away and then proceeded to start working on it on my own. Your version of Dr. Wanless is very different from the one in the book.

8 Movies Like 'Firestarter' For More Stories About Powerful Kids (Collider.com)

From Logan to Brightburn, these movies make perfect companion pieces to Firestarter.

While this movie doesn’t have the supernatural ability aspect, the strong bond that Hanna shares with her father in their fight for survival mirrors that of Firestarter’s Charlie McGee and her father Andy (Zac Efron) as they are hunted by a mysterious government agency. His injuries take longer to heal, he’s lost so many people over the years, and he is now tasked with the responsibility of protecting a young mutant girl, known as X-23 (Dafne Keen), who has the same regenerative abilities and organic bone claws as him. In 2044, Joe (Gordon-Levitt) works as a “looper.” His job is to kill the people who are sent back in time by the future crime syndicate. After it is discovered that Dani’s powers involve the physical manifestation of her fears as well as the fears of those around her, Dr. Reyes is instructed by “The Essex Corporation” to collect Dani’s DNA and then euthanize her. Raised in absolute isolation in the wilderness of northern Finland by her father (Eric Bana), Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is a 15-year-old girl trained for survival. Ruby (Amandla Stenberg) is an Orange, but she uses her powers to convince the scientists studying her that she is a Green, which labels her as a “safer” specimen. After an incident where Carrie is bullied by a group of girls, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde) regrets her actions and asks her boyfriend, Tommy Ross (Ansel Elgort), to ask Carrie to prom as a kindness. They are told by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) that they are there because they have all caused some sort of catastrophic incident and that they are being kept there to learn how to better control their powers. The premise of the movie is about Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), a young girl who develops pyrokinesis, or the ability to create and manipulate fire. Her mother, Margaret (Julianne Moore) is a religious fanatic, and is mentally, physically, and verbally abusive to Carrie, sometimes locking her in a closet for hours to “contemplate her sins and pray for forgiveness.” To her mother, Carrie’s very existence is a sin. The government sees this as a top-tier threat to humanity and begins to round up the surviving children, sometimes voluntarily given up by their parents. While the new film has just been released, this article will serve up a list of movies with similar themes and premises that you can watch in the meantime to prepare.

Firestarter Review: A Stephen King Adaptation That Changes A Lot ... (Cinema Blend)

[By] the end [Ryan Kiera Armstrong] is a force to be reckoned with, and sells every ounce of it.

Deserving its own special mention is the score from John and Cody Carpenter and Daniel A. Davies. The Christine director has some interesting history with Firestarter’s source material, as he was going to direct an adaptation before the bottom fell out of the project – but that’s just a cool Easter egg behind what is an arresting and instantly recognizable synth sound that improves every scene in which its featured. He sells his ability to “push” people with a neck crack and a stare, and it leaves him with the freaky side effect of crying blood (quite different than the simple nosebleeds in the book). Also expanded is the role Vicky plays (she’s actually dead at the start of Stephen King’s novel), and it’s a well utilized character as she adds an important perspective in the ensemble. Not lost in these changes is the bond between Andy and Charlie, as circumstances challenge Andy’s perspective on what’s right for Charlie, and the journey sees the girl coming into her own and learning how to control her powers. In doing so, it allows the audience to see more of the father-daughter relationship that is at the heart of the narrative. This turns out to be something that plays to the remake’s advantage, however, as its existence gives the new movie liberty to make different choices with the source material, and it allows the film to have the soul of the original story while also delivering surprises even (and perhaps especially) die-hard Stephen King fans can enjoy.

'Firestarter' and the evolution of the psychic teen girl (New York Post)

With a new "Firestarter" out May 13, The Post looks at characters with powers from Willow in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to Hermione in "Harry Potter" to ...

Joss Whedon‘s series featured a host of high school kids dealing with supernatural issues, but Alyson Hannigan’s geeky Willow Rosenberg was the character who most embodied the psychic-teen trope, with her powers emerging gradually throughout the series —concurrently with discovering she was gay, and then tragically losing her girlfriend. Adorable child actor Mara Wilson played the title role in this adaptation of a comically dark Roald Dahl book, in which precocious Matilda Wormwood finds she has telekinetic powers that emerge when she’s abused by the awful grownups around her. Seven seasons ensued, with Hart proving the staying power, and ratings clout, of the supernatural teen girl. A precursor to the teenage-witch bonanza of the ’90s, it brought a light touch to the subject matter. “Carrie” would pave the way for decades of dangerous psychic girls down the line in pop culture. The original “Firestarter,” based on the 1980 novel by Stephen King, starred Drew Barrymore as Charlie, an 8-year-old girl who can set things on fire with her mind.
