Alan Tudge will return to cabinet if Coalition re-elected, Morrison says (Women's Agenda)

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed Education Minister Alan Tudge will return to cabinet if the Coalition government is re-elected.

He said it was a matter for the Department of Finance. I haven’t been called as a witness,” Tudge told Sky News. Miller did not take part in the inquiry over concerns it was not fair or independent.

“Now I can assure you absolutely that no such reference has been made to me. He has previously claimed the payout was a “private matter”. And can’t be confirmed.” “Well, I’m glad you raised that point because if there were any matter that was in the assessment by the Department of Finance that involved the conduct of any Minister whatsoever in the granting of that payment, then that matter would have to be raised with me by the Department of Finance through the Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet,’’ he said. I haven’t been asked to provide evidence. I haven’t been called as a witness.

Confusion has surrounded post of education minister since PM insisted Tudge was still in cabinet, despite standing aside.

I haven’t been asked to provide evidence and as the prime minister said, if it involved me, he would have been made aware and he hasn’t been made aware.” It’s a matter for the Department of Finance. And as a result, he’s formally still the education minister.” Robert told the ABC that Plibersek had left it too late to request such a debate. “The PM has made clear my arrangements. Miller chose not to participate in the inquiry, saying the government had ignored her concerns over its terms of reference.

A central tenet of the modern Australian economy is that those on low incomes have participated in the rising prosperity that economic reforms have delivered. “This is consistent with that very Australian sense of egalitarianism, but more importantly, it is a foundation stone of a strong and stable domestic economy. “Although the Bureau of Statistics attempts to adjust its measures for improvements in quality, it concedes its efforts are incomplete. She jumped onto her Twitter to announce the betrayal to her 1.2 million followers, explaining her sleuthing method and delaring that, in the end, Rebekah was the only one looking at content that was later leaked to the press. “Dutton is more conservative and less obviously pragmatic than Morrison. He’s also a highly divisive figure in the cities. The figure for patients is more like 64%, the Health of the Nation report says, meaning more than a third of patients pay completely out of pocket. The quality and range of goods and services from food to cars to healthcare to computers to mobile phones with cameras has improved in ways figures can’t capture. It’s sure to raise eyebrows in light of Morrison’s insistence on Sunday evening that he had no part in approving or rejecting the deal (he was treasurer at the time). A high profile case is playing out in the UK courts, dubbed “Wagatha Christie” — on account of it being between two warring WAGs, an acronym for the wives and girlfriends of professional sports players. Like most high profile figures, Coleen has both a public-facing Instagram for the fans and a second, private one just for immediate friends and family. Morrison made the comments at last night’s third and final leaders debate — Labor Leader Anthony Albanese was the winner of the evening according to the audience poll, with 50% siding with him, to Morrison’s 34% (the rest didn’t know). Libs behaving badly has happened twice this week actually: The Courier-Mail ($) reported that Ryan MP Julian Simmonds had distributed a personal endorsement from a priest without authorisation, and Guardian Australia reported that The Pyjama Foundation and Access Arts both demanded Brisbane MP Trevor Evans stop handing out material that appeared to offer him their endorsements.

PM would welcome Tudge return to ministry (7NEWS.com.au)

Cleared of abuse allegations, Alan Tudge may return to a re-elected coalition government ministry, Scott Morrison has confirmed during an election debate.

“That is not a good way to run a country. That is not a good way to uphold integrity. A “pub test” conducted by Seven awarded the debate to Mr Albanese. “It needs to be developed by good design where the rule of law applies,” he said. “We do need to clean up politics and we need a national anti-corruption commission and one with teeth,” he said. “He has not resigned as a minister, nor has he been dismissed,” he said.

What the hell is going on with Alan Tudge? (Crikey)

The on-again/off-again education minister is a man of mystery — and it looks like the voting public will just have to put up with it.

“He will be happy to come back and serve in the ministry, and I welcome that.” With Tudge moving himself to the backbench just a few months out from an election, the consensus was that he would just slowly disappear into the night. News.com.au reported in early April that Miller was set to receive a taxpayer-funded compensation payment of at least $500,000, plus legal costs. The independent inquiry found insufficient evidence that Tudge breached the ministerial standards. Morrison announced an independent investigation into the allegations, and Tudge stepped down from the ministry. In November 2020, Tudge’s former staffer Rachelle Miller revealed that she and Tudge had conducted a secret affair while she worked for him.

Morrison grilled over Tudge affair, with second minister named (The New Daily)

Scott Morrison has faced more questions over the $500000 payout to a former staffer and lover of Alan Tudge – with another minister's name also raised.

“There is a cost of living [crisis] and everything is going up except for wages. He knows he acted recklessly, and he’s been trying to cover his tracks ever since.” Mr Albanese accused the government of constantly spruiking a strong economy, but acting as if “the sky is falling in” when Labor supported a $1 an hour increase to the minimum wage. “What I have said consistently … is if the Fair Work Commission, that operates independently of government, makes a decision to not cut real wages and keep up with the cost of living, that’s something that I would welcome.” Senator Cash has also denied any claims of bullying. The idea that we would support a real wage cut for people on the minimum wage is an extraordinary claim,” he said in Gladstone. “That was my last advice. Mr Albanese hit back, saying he had been consistent that he supported a real wage increase and the government couldn’t go over the top of the commission. “We all want to see wages increase but I don’t want to see reckless behaviour in how the process should work and this is where Mr Albanese has failed,” he said. Mr Albanese said he would support a 5.1 per cent wage increase in line with inflation at a 20-year high, but indicated the mechanism to seek the rise would be determined in coming weeks. If there was any matter there that went to the conduct of any minister, any minister at all, that related to the ministry or standards, then I would be advised of that,” he said. “I have been advised of no such matters that would require my attention in relation to the ministerial standards.”

No one knows anything about the payout process (except when they do). Political editor Katharine Murphy walks through the saga.

I haven’t been asked to provide evidence and as the prime minister said, if it involved me, he would have been made aware and he hasn’t been made aware.” Given the broad allegations levelled in Miller’s workplace claim have been reported publicly and widely in a number of media outlets, it is odd for Tudge to say he has no information. It’s a matter for the Department of Finance”. My understanding is it’s a separate matter that’s being handled by the Department of Finance and you’ll need to direct your questions to them”. “Well, I can’t be,” he said. Then a little later in the debate, Morrison veered back to the workplace action. That was my last advice.” One of the stranger stories in this campaign has been the travails of Alan Tudge – Schrödinger’s minister – a person both in and out of Scott Morrison’s cabinet. Morrison then appointed the distinguished former bureaucrat Vivienne Thom to investigate whether or not there had been any breach of his ministerial standards. Back in April, Morrison told 2GB he had no “visibility” on that workplace action. “We had an independent inquiry into Alan Tudge,” Morrison said. Tudge denied Miller’s allegations and went to the backbench.
