Strong mix of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains on offer for new Rangie Sport.
We’ll wait until we drive it, of course, but at first acquaintance the new Range Rover Sport looks like a thorough and deeply thoughtful rework of a formula that’s found favour around the world. Both will be based on the lavish Autobiography trim level. All models come with a high/low range transfer case, wheel articulation is 546mm, and the air suspension can hoist the Sport 135mm above its standard ride height to give it 281mm of ground clearance. The range will later be expanded with the addition of an all-electric model in 2024. Powertrains start with the 3.0-litre Ingenium turbocharged straight-six petrol and diesel engines with the 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) system. MLA-Flex has been designed to accommodate mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full battery-electric powertrains, and JLR’s powerful EVA 2.0 electronic architecture. It’s a Range Rover, so of course the seats are leather trimmed. You’ll hear the difference rather than see it – many of the speakers are hidden behind a new woven acoustic fabric on the door panels. 99 The optional Dynamic appearance pack delivers a sportier, more dramatic treatment of the front splitter and rear faux diffuser. 99 Look closely and you’ll notice a gentle crease that effectively wraps around the rear of the car, subtly adding strength to the whole rear end.
The 2023 Range Rover Sport configurator is up, and the most expensive model is a First Edition that can cost $141190 with every option added.
That doesn't include black wheels, however, which will cost you another $350. Add another $560 for a full-size spare wheel, and if you want to tow with your sporty SUV, Tow Assist is $450. Curiously, Land Rover also lists the receiver hitch setup as a $750 option. You'll pay for it though, as the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport First Edition starts at $122,850. And the most expensive item is the upgraded Meridan Signature Sound System with 29 speakers and 1,430 watts of power, costing $4,500. A rear-seat entertainment system costs $3,150 and includes two 11.4-inch screens for second-row occupants to watch. Special introductory trims are often decked out with nearly every available feature as standard equipment, and to Land Rover's credit, the First Edition does come well-equipped. But as we quickly discovered in the automaker's online configurator, that's not the case with the Range Rover Sport First Edition. We racked up $18,340 in options, bringing our most expensive grand total to a whopping $141,190.

A stiffer platform underpins the new Range Rover Sport and a dynamic air suspension system comes standard on all models. The 2023 Range Rover Sport also adds an all-wheel steering system and the rear wheels can turn up to 7.3 degrees to tighten the SUV’s turning radius at low speeds and increase stability at highway speeds. The diesel is gone and electrification abounds. Thinly banded headlights match equally skinny taillights that flank the Land Rover logo in its all-caps glory. With the door handles retracting into the body, the Sport appears almost porpoise-like in its apparent smoothness.
This new SUV offers the same stellar styling and premium interior of the larger Range Rover, but in a slightly smaller and more affordable package.
Providing the off-road capability drivers expect from a Land Rover is a shotgun blast of technology. Next, we have the P440e Autobiography, a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that -- you guessed it -- is also built around a 3.0-liter, turbocharged I6. It's good for 434 hp and a whopping 619 lb-ft of torque. Giving this SUV the agility of a small car, four-wheel steering is available. Giving drivers plenty of choice, a wide range of powertrains will be offered in this next-generation SUV. The entry-level P360 SE trim features a turbocharged mild-hybrid Ingenium 3.0-liter inline-six that delivers 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. For drivers that want a little more, the P400 SE Dynamic variant takes that same basic engine and turns the wick up to deliver 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of twist. The Range Rover Sport will only be offered with room for five, so if you were hoping for a third row of seats, unfortunately, that's not in the cards. In keeping with the times, the Range Rover Sport's Electrical Vehicle Architecture 2.0 supports over-the-air software updates. Front and rear parking sensors are available, as is a Wade Sensing water-depth meter and a ground-view camera system. This multimedia array is displayed on a gently curving, floating display that clocks in at a generous 13.1 inches. Built on the automaker's mixed-metal architecture (MLA-Flex in Land Rover parlance), this vehicle has 35% higher torsional stiffness than its predecessor, a significant increase that should improve everything from driving dynamics to refinement to crash safety. Visually, there's a little bit more going on at the back of this utility vehicle. The rear has some eye-catching surfaces and the Range Rover wordmark is incorporated into a full-width piece of trim that incorporates the leeringly narrow taillights.
