Xi says China’s Covid policies will ‘stand the test of time in Shanghai’ A statement issued after the meeting articulated the concerns that drive unwavering adherence to “the general policy of dynamic zero-Covid”. Citing a huge population with a large ageing component, unbalanced regional development and a lack of medical resources, it said relaxing controls would cause a large outbreak and many deaths, seriously affecting socioeconomic development and public health and safety. He said China’s approach would stand the test of time and pledged to fight any attempt to “distort, question and challenge” the country’s policies. Xi spoke out on the Shanghai outbreak for the first time at a meeting of the Politburo Standing Committee, the country’s highest decision-making body.

In Beijing, where more than 500 cases have been reported since April 20, many fear for a Shanghai-style lockdown as authorities roll out increasingly restrictions. In April, China's services sector, which accounts for more than half of the nation's GDP and over 40 percent of its employment, contracted at the second sharpest pace on record, while the manufacturing sector also shrunk. Over the past five weeks, many Shanghai residents have taken to social media to call for help and vent their anger over severe food shortages and lack of access to medical care.

Xi Jinping Warns For Questioning China's Zero-Covid Policy (NDTV)

Chinese President Xi Jinping issued the strongest warning yet against anyone who questions the country's zero-Covid policy.

"Our prevention and control strategy is determined by the party's nature and mission, our policies can stand the test of history, our measures are scientific and effective," the seven-member committee said, according to government news agency Xinhua. And as Omicron spreads in other parts of China, more local governments are imposing swift lockdowns in response to just a handful of cases. At a meeting chaired by Xi on Thursday, the ruling Communist Party's supreme Politburo Standing Committee vowed to "unswervingly adhere to the general policy of 'dynamic zero-Covid,' and resolutely fight against any words and acts that distort, doubt or deny our country's epidemic prevention policies."

Xi Jinping warns against maligning China's zero-Covid policy (ANI News)

Hong Kong, May 7 (ANI): Chinese President Xi Jinping issued the strongest warning yet against anyone who questions the country's zero-Covid policy.

Xi has put his personal stamp on China's zero-Covid strategy, with state media often reporting that he has "personally commanded and made arrangements" for the country's fight against the pandemic. But the latest statement from the country's top leaders has made it clear that the Chinese government is doubling down on its approach of relying on swift lockdowns, mass testing and quarantine to squash the highly transmissible Omicron variant for the foreseeable future, reported CNN. "We have won the battle to defend Wuhan, and we will certainly be able to win the battle to defend Shanghai," it said.

Even the Pope claims to be infallible only on matters of faith and doctrine. By Gwynne Dyer. Saturday, 7th May 2022, 6:00 am ...

Xi has purged and/or jailed a great many senior officials on corruption charges, and those who were still in office seemed thoroughly cowed. This autumn marks the end of the two five-year terms that Xi would have been permitted under the Communist Party’s post-Mao rules, which were designed precisely to thwart other would-be absolute dictators from gaining powers. Xi Jinping seems to have missed that memo, and has pressed on with the zero-Covid policy even at great cost to the Chinese economy and in the face of growing resentment among ordinary Chinese people. But their governments knew that this could not be a permanent policy, and as soon as the great majority of their populations were fully vaccinated they began to release the restrictions. On the chance of rain or the speed of a racehorse he will freely admit that he is just as fallible as you and I. For more than two years now, Xi has loudly proclaimed that China’s zero-Covid policy has been a brilliant success that demonstrates the superiority of the Chinese system and of his own leadership.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns in Taiwan about a potential Chinese attack on the island. However, it was not as overt as this time. There have also been videos of locked-up residents yelling “we want food” and “we want freedom.” Citizens are seen walking to their balconies to protest the paucity of supplies in a video. China has often dismissed these accusations from the West as propaganda aimed at maligning it. “And it is difficult not to hear in this phrase about ‘self-righteousness’ condemnation of leaders in Shanghai in particular,” Bandurski added. “We have won the battle to defend Wuhan, and we will certainly be able to win the battle to defend Shanghai,” it said.

Chinese President Xi Jinpingserved his most stern warning yet to those who oppose the government’s measures. As Shanghai residents stay in lockdown since March 28 and workers grow exhausted with a closed-loop system, why is China adamant about stamping out Covid at the cost of public discontent and economic slowdown?
