Lightweight champion Oliveira weighed in half a pound over the 155lb limit yesterday and now cannot retain his title even if he beats Justin Gaethje.
The Arizona Department of Gaming, who are licensing the UFC 274 show, insisted the official scale was correct. I was told at 7:30am that the scale was off. But a conspiracy theory began to emerge as fighters complained the 'test' scale they used before the official weigh-in was faulty.

Charles Oliveira has a tendency to get hurt in the first round and usually loses as he keeps things on the feet. He’ll want nothing to do with Oliveira on the ground and will want to get things going early in order to take advantage of his opponent’s weaknesses. Charles Oliveira has plenty of things to like about his game and his tendency to land body kicks should play a big factor in this one. Charles Oliveira has plenty of tools to win the fight and he is going to have to survive some scary moments to get it done. If he can survive the first round, it is very likely he finds a submission to earn a shot to get his title back. The main event of UFC 274 was supposed to be Charles Oliveira defending his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje. The champion missed weight and was subsequently stripped of the title.

"I trust Cerrone's cardio much more. But his last performance ended in a first-round stoppage of prospect Jonathan Pearce, who has since won three straight. His last victory came in a dominant five-round main event against Al Iaquinta in May 2019 that he won by unanimous decision. Both fighters are considered legends of MMA who have more than 25 years of combined UFC experience between them. He gets his way most of the time, which is why the former World Series of Fighting champion is on the short list of the UFC's most popular fighters. But the 32-year-old Brazilian has since gone on a tear that has seen him finish nine opponents while winning 10 straight. Kattar dominated to win a unanimous decision and give his followers an easy winner. He started the MMA handicapping service MMA Knockout Bets in 2018 and has shown a profit every year since. Gaethje grew up a couple of hours away in Safford, Ariz., where he was a high school wrestling star before accepting a scholarship to Northern Colorado. The top-ranked lightweight already was one of the most popular fighters on the UFC roster, and now he'll have a massive edge in crowd support as he looks to claim the belt with a win.
Can Justin Gaethje snag the belt that Charles Oliveira lost at the scale? And can Rose Namajunas avenge a loss to Carla Esparza to retain her title?
“J-Lau” has always been one of the brightest minds in the business and if he can afford to live comfortably and only step into the octagon when he’s properly trained and healthy, then more power to him. I think Saint Preux will actually look to go to his grappling more in the hopes of tiring out the near 20-year veteran, before hunting for a submission in the later rounds. Obviously, two fights is still a small sample size in the grand scheme of things but there’s something to be said about Rua’s adaptability and competitiveness. I won’t make the same mistake with Ferguson that I made with Tyron Woodley, a former champion that I picked time and time again to pull out of his career spiral even as it became clearer with every disappointing performance that that wasn’t going to happen. It makes sense to go with the more active Cerrone, but I actually love that Lauzon has taken a “I’m just going to fight when I want to” approach to the latter stages of his career. The longtime Bellator lightweight king has had an eventful a 1-2 start to his UFC career and even in his defeats he’s looked like a legitimate contender. He’s always been freakishly strong and all he needs is one moment to get a solid bodylock on Gaethje, get him to the ground, and get his back. Namajunas is capable of matching that feat, I just don’t see it happening on Saturday because a prime Esparza is going to be in grind mode and she won’t leave Namajunas any openings. However, I have a habit of holding on to the diminishing returns of previously elite fighters for too long. Back in December 2014, Rose Namajunas was a gifted prospect who was already making a name for herself in Invicta FC and on The Ultimate Fighter 20. It was later announced that Oliveira would be stripped of his title and that only Gaethje would be eligible to leave Footprint Center in Phoenix with the belt around his waist. But he bit the bullet and committed to lightweight where he eventually rattled off 10 straight wins and established himself as the best lightweight in the world (at least according to the MMA Fighting Global Rankings).
