There is hope that on Friday night, the Sixers can get in the winner’s column with a Game 3 victory. While the Sixers shot slightly better from deep in the Game 2 matchup on Wednesday, they still took on a double-digit loss when it was all said and done. Once again, the Sixers played without Embiid. And similar to Game 1, the Sixers had a lot of fight in them but not a lot of success from beyond the arc.

If we play like this every game, we have a chance. “We played with pace and we played defense,” Doncic said. Instead, he was on the court to make big plays in defence and did just that in the second quarter with a steal on a Victor Oladipo pass and block on a Herro driving layup. It begged the question — with Embiid to sit in the opening stages of the fourth quarter and Harden not in a position to take over — who would step up to help the Sixers home. The Sixers were not without their own issues, turning the ball over seven times in the quarter but were led by Embiid and Harden (seven and nine points respectively) and had 10 transition points to the Heat’s three. Philadelphia rode a strong defensive showing in the opening half to take a 41-34 lead, holding Miami to its fewest points in a half in a playoff game since 2013.

Embiid wasn't the dominant force he was throughout the season and tired as the game went on. Butler led the Heat with 33 points. Tyler Herro, though, had two critical 3s of his own in the final minute and pulled the Heat to 68-65 to close the third. Even Rivers couldn't draw up a plan that included the play that helped put away the game: Maxey made a full-court sprint to save a basketball with an over-the-shoulder toss. When Sixers public address announcer Matt Cord announced ''there are no injuries'' on the pregame report, Sixers fans went wild. Wearing a hammer-tested mask, Embiid had 18 points and 11 rebounds after missing the first two games of the series with a right orbital fracture and a mild concussion suffered in the last round.

Philadelphia's star center remains out as the Sixers face a 2-0 series deficit against the Heat.

It isn’t just the absence of Embiid, though, that has hurt Philadelphia in the series. The absence of Embiid has been felt by the 76ers in the playoffs on offense and defense, particularly in the interior. Miami has taken a 2-0 lead in 18 previous series, including the first round this season against Atlanta, and won those matchups every time.

But that can still be altered in the hours leading up to tipoff. During an appearance on First Take Friday, ESPN analyst and former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins said the Sixers shouldn’t rush an injured Joel Embiid back to the court. He has missed the entire series so far with an orbital fracture and a concussion, but when he cleared the concussion protocol on Friday morning, there was some optimism that he could return to action — despite also playing through a torn thumb ligament in his shooting hand. The public is a little bit leery of being pro-James Harden at this point.” Will Embiid’s presence, despite the possibility of him being on a minutes restriction, be enough for the Sixers to cut into the Heat’s 2-0 series lead? Without Embiid, Rivers on Thursday re-emphasized the importance of spacing the floor and added it was “vital” to create early offense. Though typically dangerous shooters Danny Green, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, and Georges Niang went a combined 4 of 21 from deep during Wednesday’s 119-103 defeat, Rivers said his staff evaluated that game as their 12th best of the season in terms of shot quality. And while Joel Embiid’s return was the story of the night, and his presence has certainly made a difference on both ends of the floor for Philly, the biggest difference-maker for Doc Rivers’ team has been James Harden, who leads all scorers with 15 points, include 8-8 from the free-throw line. He helped on Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro with 5 minutes to play in the first quarter. The Sixers weren’t much better from the floor, finishing just 12-35 (34.3%), but the biggest difference came at the free-throw line, where they were 12-14 as a team. Not coincidentally, Harden had 15 points in the first half. He scored 18 points and added 11 rebounds — and issued a warningafter the win.

Sixers praise Matisse Thybulle for looking like himself again vs. Heat (Sixers Wire)

The Philadelphia 76ers praise Matisse Thybulle for finally looking like himself again in the Game 3 win over the Miami Heat.

He’s a very elite scorer so we need Matisse to come in and be in his pocket, chase him around the floor, contest all his shots, and make it difficult for him. He had a block on a Herro drive in Friday’s win and he was constantly getting his hands in the passing lanes and getting deflections. Matisse Thybulle had a tough start to this second-round series with the Miami Heat as he really didn’t look like himself.
