Kevin Samuels, a YouTuber who became known for his controversial relationship advice, has died, his mother confirmed to NBC News.

Samuels, who described himself as an image consultant, shared YouTube videos to his 1.4 million subscribers discussing topics that included dating and relationships. Samuels was a controversial figure on social media, as the relationship guru often expressed opinions that some listeners viewed as misogynistic. Melanie King, a Canadian actress and friend of Samuels, posted photographs of Samuels to her Instagram page, along with a message saying that she was in “shock” from the reports. Phillip Lewis, a senior editor at the Huffington Post, tweeted that he spoke with police in Atlanta to confirm some of the details of Samuels’ death. “That was a terrible thing for social media to put that out. The rumor originated with unsourced social media posts, so many people weren’t sure whether it was factual.

Samuels received frequent criticism for his YouTube videos, specifically for his takes on Black women and dating.

In February, Future shot a fake therapy session with Samuels to promote his single “Worst Day,” which tied into the concept of toxic masculinity that the rapper often explores in his music. He often stressed a belief that Black women had unrealistically high standards about the types of men they should be dating, while also being vocally critical of men who are poor or overweight. According to the Atlanta Police Department, Samuels was with a woman he met that day who then spent the night with him.

Atlanta police confirmed that Samuels was found unresponsive on the floor of his apartment. Samuels was famous for his takes on dating and relationships.
