HBO has announced that the 'Game of Thrones' prequel series 'House of the Dragon' is in production and will release in 2022. Here's everything we know so ...
While Game of Thrones was based in Northern Ireland for its entire run, House of the Dragon has opted to shoot in England instead. House Targaryen representatives will include Considine as King Viserys Targaryen with Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, the king’s younger brother and heir to the throne, and D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s firstborn daughter. HBO has announced an August 21 release for House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones “successor show” that follows a Targaryen civil war taking place in Westeros 300 years before the events of the original series. “(Only to have your heart broken later when … but no, that would be telling).” From the teaser to the cast to the story lines, here’s everything that’s been revealed about the project taking us back to Martin’s universe. Starring Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, and Emma D’Arcy, among others, the show is the only GOT prequel currently green-lit despite at least three others reportedly in the works (a moment of silence for the Naomi Watts spinoff that never was). Although it may be difficult to live up to the expectations set by its epic, record-breaking predecessor, the first episode of House of the Dragon is already George R.R. Martin approved. “I’ve seen a rough cut of the first episode.
Lord of Winterfell Rickard Stark makes an appearance in the latest House of the Dragon trailer. How does the direwolf fit into this dance of dragons?
This House of the Dragon trailer, and Lord Rickard Stark’s involvement in it, sets up a hugely important political event that will eventually lead to one of the most destructive wars in Westeros’s history. But for now the House of the Dragon trailer has given us Rickard Stark: feminist icon. Have you ever wondered why most of the dynasties in the Game of Thrones world operate under a primogeniture model of succession in which male descendents always take precedence over female? Both names pop up a lot throughout the history of House Stark and in fact the two “Rick” variations combined are likely the second most popular name in the family behind only “Brandon.” Rickard Stark was actually the name of Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark’s father. For starters, though his name could be heard as “Rickard” or “Rickon”, closed captioning on the trailer confirms that he is indeed called the former. And what does his presence mean for House of the Dragon? Thankfully, we have read Fire & Blood, George R.R. Martin’s Targaryen history novel that the HBO series is based on, so we can offer up some answers.
The latest trailer for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel "House of the Dragon" officially gives us a glimpse of the titular winged beasts.
"House of the Dragon" premieres August 21 on HBO. "History does not remember blood," a character mutters ominously. Surely they won't be unleashed as tools of mass destruction

HBO on Thursday released the official teaser trailer for "House of the Dragon," the highly anticipated prequel series to "Game of Thrones." HBO Max previously released a shorter preview of "House of the Dragon" in October. It's time for the reign of House Targaryen to begin.
New 'Game of Thrones' series, same old squabbles over the Iron Throne - with prequel 'House of the Dragon' focusing on House Targaryen.
Also, you don't have to be the Three-Eyed Raven to know that fighting, battles for supremacy and bloodshed are always a part of every GoT narrative. As for Condal, he co-created and oversaw recent sci-fi series Colony, and co-wrote the screenplay for the 2018 film Rampage. And, as the new footage makes plain, the prequel knows that everyone watching are all well aware of how things turned out when Daenerys Targaryen claimed power (even if this series — which is based on a George RR Martin book, Fire & Blood, of course — is set a couple of hundred years earlier). It then green-lit one to pilot stage, scrapped it and later picked a contender to run with: the upcoming House of the Dragon. It also opted to give novella series Tales of Dunk and Egg the TV treatment, too, and to work on an animated GoT show. That's intertwined with the entire history of the Seven Kingdoms, though. Throughout all of this, GoT fans have been told one thing over and over, even without it being explicitly said.
Meanwhile, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has spent over a decade—since July of 2011—writing the latest novel in the series. The Winds Of ...
This trailer for House Of The Dragon, a prequel to Game Of Thrones, looks absolutely stunning. Be sure to follow me on this blog for all my episodic TV reviews, game reviews and more. It has my hype for this fantastical world restored in a way that only a new book, or perhaps a new Dunk & Egg novella, could. It’s probably the show I’m most excited to review this year. Fewer tears than I would have once expected would be shed. Nobody, at this point, would be shocked.
Notably, this trailer shows the ancestors of some famous families from the original show bending the knee to King Viserys Targaryen. There's Lord Rickon Stark ( ...
Where Game of Thrones focused on the last Targaryen’s quest to take back the Iron Throne, House of the Dragon will focus on the infamously bloody reign that led to the Targaryens’ unseating. While five spinoff shows were considered to fill the immediate void left by the flagship show, only House of the Dragon moved forward. Boremund Baratheon (ancestor to Robert) is also present, as is Corlys Velaryon, leader of a house that fell under the Baratheon banner by the time Game of Thrones rolled around.
If you were curious what the point is of doing a Game Of Thrones prequel series, set long before anyone you know from the original series is born, when the ...
But hey, Matt Smith in that awful wig should be fun to watch for a while, right? Maybe the thing in 200 years where the whole world goes to war to stop a woman from taking over? As someone informs the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen: “Men would sooner put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne.”
From featuring a scene wherein Lord Rickard Stark, Corlys Velaryon, and Boremund Baratheon pledge allegiance to King Viserys I Targaryen, Harrenhal in all its ...
“The Hand of the King, who loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air.” So the most important thing for us to do is to respect that show as much as possible and try and complement it rather than reinvent it.” “And I was involved in making the original show, so I feel like that’s been useful. Hell, on the merit of this latest House of the Dragon trailer alone, we’re almost inclined to give the franchise a pass for Game of Throne’s disastrous final season. From featuring a scene wherein Lord Rickard Stark, Corlys Velaryon, and Boremund Baratheon pledge allegiance to King Viserys I Targaryen, Harrenhal in all its former glory, to the obligatory appearance from the odd dragon (or two)… everything just looks right.
The trailer also shows the great families of Stark and Baratheon swearing allegiance to King Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine, and his heir Princess ...

A fiery teaser for House of the Dragon reveals HBO's much-hyped follow-up to the fantasy hit.
Game of Thrones premiered on HBO in 2011 and over eight seasons became the company’s biggest show ever, winning 59 Emmys, a record for a drama series. I don’t think they’d be in their right minds to include any of that any more.” Hopefully, fans will enjoy it for the thing that it is.”
King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) names his eldest child Rhaenyra Targaryen as his heir, even if naming a woman goes against precedent. That holds for ...
We know the broad outlines of the story: it’s 200 years before Game of Thrones and the Targaryens are at the height of their power. They’re facing down Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the Hand of the King and an enemy of Daemon’s at court. That’s easy to do because Daemon has a habit of acting out and flouting tradition, like when he gives a dragon egg to his unborn child with Mysaria; that might be what the groups are arguing about in these shots.
A new trailer for House Of The Dragon had some Game Of Thrones fans throwing a fit when it featured a so-called 'feminist comment'
While a third explained: "Ummmmmm...all the books *are* is politics. asked one frustrated Twitter user, later adding: "Injecting our current political points into fantasy is what I was referring to with Netflix." Did HBO not learn that lesson?"

We’re standing on the shoulders of that show and we’re only here because of that show. Sapochnik had previously told the publication, "House of the Dragon has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Game of Thrones prequel isn't the only project that the channel has decided to air soon. It also highlighted the troubled Targaryens fighting for power and the return of the iron throne. It even featured some bits of the House Targaryen theme song from GoT. This year, after mini teasers and posters, House of the Dragon finally has a trailer and a release date.
Have you been as starved for Westerosi content as a dragon chained in the Meereenese catacombs? Well suffer no longer. HBO has just released character ...
HBO has just released character posters of the House of the Dragon cast to get us [even more] hyped for the show. It’s a bit of an odd choice to tweet a screen cap rather than a set photo, but it gives us a tantalizing look at Rhaenyra standing over a map of Westeros while four figures (one of whom looks like Rhaenys; the other three I couldn’t make out) walk away. Have you been as starved for Westerosi content as a dragon chained in the Meereenese catacombs?

Like many of Westeros’ best schemers, Otto also served as Hand of the King during the rule of Viserys. Viserys is an ailing king whose nearly 30 years of rule end in complete disaster thanks to his controversial choice of successor. Rhaenyra is also a dragonrider who rides Syrax. Rhaenyra is supported by her uncle and later husband, Daemon Targaryen, as well as her former mother-in-law, Rhaenys Velaryon. Though she is supposed to be next in line for the throne, not everyone will support her claim. The war was over succession of the throne, and the seeds were planted during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen. Viserys named his eldest surviving child, Rhaenyra Targaryen, as his successor. However, shortly after his death, a council gave the throne to Aegon II Targaryen, the first child of Viserys’ current wife, Alicent Hightower, and the king’s eldest male heir.

House of the Dragon will be released on HBO on August 21, 2022. The series itself will actually be a continuation of George R.R. Martin’s series Fire & Blood. While I expect to go into this show with reduced expectations, this trailer gave me hope that HBO can continue to deliver Game of Thrones magic on a grand scale. It can be appreciated how the series seems to take the time to show the backstory of some of these characters while establishing them in the present day of the story. We also get a fantastic look at King Viserys sitting on a much more book-accurate version of the Iron Throne, something that will make many fans happy. Three years after HBO’s divisive finale of Game of Thrones, the land of Westeros finally returns to us.
