The Star Wars franchise could learn a major lesson from Mobile Suit ... (Polygon)

Star Wars is still as popular as ever, but no one seems to know where it should go next. Here's one answer: The popular 1979 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam ...

The Gundam miniseries War in the Pocket is a particularly solid illustration of what Star Wars could gain by branching out. The war in Star Wars’ original trilogy — what the current canon dubs “The Age of Rebellion” — could be Star Wars’ One Year War, a conflict that defines or lurks in the background of every story. War in the Pocket accomplishes a lot of wrenching things across its brief run, but most memorably, it’s a story that re-asserts perspective, much like a popular Gundam meme. War in the Pocket is a story about a boy who watches footage of the war on television and thrills to the imagery of giant robots fighting amid skyscrapers and leveling cities. That attempt to prioritize nostalgia, re-creating the past rather than telling a new story, is already a goal one degree removed from what all art — even art this openly commercial — strives to accomplish. The current era of Star Wars is primarily fueled by trepidation. The zealous adherence to the one era of Star Wars that is widely considered the best could give creators the leeway to be a little bolder in other eras of its story, giving us a variety we will desperately need if Disney feels a need to keep its current pace with Star Wars media. One of the quirks of the Gundam franchise is that its “core” timeline, dubbed the Universal Century, is largely centered around a yearlong war. There’s the soapier boy-band spin of Gundam Wing, the grim resistance fable of Iron-Blooded Orphans, or the silly robot fighting tournament at the heart of Mobile Fighter G Gundam. The common thread is almost all iconography: giant robots, the young people who pilot them, and the fans who thrill to see them. But the film and TV side of Star Wars feels like it’s struggling. Mobile Suit Gundam, the original series, takes place in the final months of the war, chronicling how the boy Amuro Ray stumbles into the cockpit of an experimental new mobile suit and helps the Earth Federation turn the tide of their war against their aggressors, the separatist and fascist-leaning Principality of Zeon. Subsequent series, like Zeta Gundam, take place after this conflict, and depict its continued fallout. The Star Wars franchise is constantly producing a stream of profitable new merchandising and material, including video games, novels, comics, and animated shows.

May the 4th be with you: 7 wild 'Star Wars' technologies scientist are ... (Livescience.com)

From warp drives to lightsabers to deadly battle droids, here are 7 futuristic Star Wars technologies that scientists are working on in real life.

In 1994, physicist Miguel Alcubierre published a paper showing how warp drive could be physically possible, by using equal amounts of positive and negative energy to simultaneously compress the space in front of a spaceship while expanding the space behind it. In June 2021, an auction winner paid $28 million to join the inaugural flight of Blue Origin, a commercial space travel company founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos. The lucky winner’s son joined Bezos and his brother on a 10-minute trip to space — reaching a maximum altitude of about 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth (technically, past the point where Earth's atmosphere ends and space begins). That's an expensive 10 minutes — but some experts have predicted that the cost of commercial space travel could drop to about $100,000 per person in the coming decade. In our world, commercial space travel costs a bit more — and you don't even get to leave the solar system. However, creative inventors — like those behind the YouTube channel Hacksmith — have come up with some clever (and deadly) laser swords that come pretty close to the preferred weapon of the Jedi. In 2018, Hacksmith created the world's first retractable, plasma-based energy sword, with a 4,000-degree Fahrenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius) blade capable of cutting through solid titanium. Depending on how well your lightsaber works, you may soon need the assistance of a bionic arm, like the one Luke receives at the end of "Empire." Here's a piece of technology that's not just science fiction anymore. U.S. tech firm Boston Dynamics demonstrates this with two now-infamous robots: Atlas — a terrifyingly agile bipedal droid that can sprint, backflip and do parkour — and the robo-dog Spot — an autonomous, four-legged robot that has already found work in hospital wards, on farms and with the NYPD. These bots aren't designed specifically for combat, — but we'd hate to run into either of them in a dark alley at night.

Celebrate Star Wars Day 2022 on May the 4th with deals, Disney+ ... (USA TODAY)

Celebrate Star Wars Day 2022 on May the 4th with the best Star Wars deals on games, toys, Disney+ and more.

Fans celebrate Star Wars Day on May the 4th, meaning Star Wars Day 2022 arrives tomorrow, May 4 as a nod to the classic catchphrase. That new era has made watching the Star Wars movies easier than ever. If you’re an Xbox gamer, you can take to space for tense dogfights in Star Wars: Squadrons which is available in digital code for Xbox One at GameStop for $9.99 thanks to a whopping 75% discount. It’s also the home of numerous Star Wars TV series, from classics like Star Wars: Clone Wars from 2003 to the latest hits like the 2021 series, The Book of Boba Fett. While you can’t take the day off work in honor of the fall and rise of the Jedi, there are plenty of other ways to toast Anakin, Luke and the gang. The uncanny phonetic similarity to May the 4th inspired Star Wars fans to create Star Wars Day. Not only is May 4 a reason to celebrate the impact George Lucas’s sci-fi bonanza left on the world, but it’s also a chance to expand your collection of Star Wars-themed toys, games and memorabilia for more affordable prices—and a great time to stream all the movies and TVs shows too.

Star Wars Teases Its Big Plans for May the 4th (The Direct)

Disney and Lucasfilm teased that they have a couple of things up their sleeves for May the 4th.

If this second trailer does end up coming on May the 4th, it will likely be the first time fans get a visual taste of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the series. Because of this release timing, the 4th feels like the most logical time to drop a second trailer and continue to drum up anticipation for the upcoming show. One of the most obvious picks for what they are referring to would be a second Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer.

The Best Star Wars Games To Get During All These May 4th Sales (Kotaku)

Whether it's for PC or console, here are the games that will give you the most bang for your buck.

It might not be as complex as other Star Wars space combat sims, but it looks amazing and features a solid Star Wars narrative focusing on both sides of the classic war seen in the original trilogy of films. If you are making a list of the best Star Wars games to buy or play or whatever, it has to include both Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel. Still to this day, fans dream of a sequel that can tie up the cliffhanger ending of the original Republic Commando. While that seems unlikely, you can at least pick up this game on a few different platforms for cheap during the ongoing sales. Thankfully, these fantastic RPGs set in the far-off past of the Star Wars universe are available on a variety of platforms including mobile and PC. You can even play the original on Switch. There have been a lot of great Star Wars space combat games and the most recent one, Squadrons from EA, is a perfect place to start if you’ve not played many (or any) of the previous X-Wing or TIE Fighter games. While it’s not the first Star Wars racing game ever made, it’s easily the best. Sure, the recently released Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a wonderful game, filled with worlds and missions based on all 9 mainline films. But the classic Complete Saga (which ironically isn’t complete anymore…) is still worth checking out for its own lower-budget charm and silliness. To help you on your own personal journey to spend some cash on Star Wars, I’ve put together a list of 11 games that are currently on sale and worth grabbing. Some have even called it the best Star Wars game ever. If you’ve ever wanted to play a big-budget action game that felt like Star Wars fan-fiction written by a 13-year-old, here you go. So I’ll ignore how silly the whole concept of Star Wars Day is if I can get some cheap games out of it.

“He would be proud of you,” Obi-Wan said, a pure sincerity in his voice. “You know I should be there with you.” Obi-Wan had heard variations on that statement before, and in some cases it came with the intimation that Anakin considered himself more powerful, more capable, the obvious solution. Obi-Wan even mentions Padme in a way that feels like a test of Anakin’s feelings before talking more about his unorthodox upcoming trip to investigate the disaster on Cato Neimoidia. “His faith would be rewarded.” “I was just catching up on the Cato Neimoidia news and—” Both Jedi have become military generals virtually overnight, now in command of thousands of clone troopers created for this war.

Star Wars needs new characters, not endlessly recycled ones (Polygon)

Move over, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker, and make room for the next generation. The Mandalorian and the Star Wars animated series are ...

But Ahsoka and other fan-favorite animated characters have helped the Star Wars animated shows open up the kinds of stories Star Wars can tell, and the kinds of points of view they represent. (He may be coming to The Mandalorian soon as well.) New droid characters like Rogue One’s snarky reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk), The Mandalorian’s assassin-turned-nanny IG-11 (Taika Waititi), and Solo: A Star Wars Story’s toweringly angry droid freedom fighter L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) all earned followings for the way they not only brought humor to their stories, but expanded Star Wars’ understanding of what droids could want and do. But the new characters are so obviously the lifeblood of the Star Wars series. After 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, fans should probably just give up on the hope of Star Wars meaningfully moving its story forward in time. Even stories that move past Return of the Jedi’s ending have often either obsessively imitated the original Star Wars run, or narratively looped back to it, prioritizing old, familiar characters over new ones. But the film and TV side of Star Wars feels like it’s struggling.

I measure success by the ability of a person to form their own opinions, to fight for their own dreams and views, and to make their own informed decisions.” Maria: I’m a fighter, so I would choose the Rebel Alliance. In order for good things to happen, you have to fight. I would be constantly bumping heads with other Jedi, which is why I said I make life harder for myself, but all because I want the Jedi Order to be better. And when those freedoms and liberties are threatened, you have to make a stand, so that’s why I would join the Rebel Alliance. And I love how that was the beginning of everything else in the saga. I remember going to the movie theater by myself on an early weekday morning and coming away feeling excited about the future of Star Wars animation. And the hosts continue to enjoy other Star Wars animation, including Star Wars Resistance and The Bad Batch. “I know he started out rough around the edges, but he grew up to be a genuinely selfless and courageous person who fully embraced his warm-hearted and empathic nature,” Johna agrees. The podcast grew in popularity, and in 2017 Maria and Johna had a very special guest: Dave Filoni stopped by to chat with the pair about Star Wars Rebels, Forces of Destiny, and more. “Star Wars Rebels captures everything I love about Star Wars,” she says, “from reinforcing the power of hope to exploring some of the weirder aspects of the Force.” “I remember watching A New Hope in my living room whenever it appeared on television, playing Episode I: Racer and Rogue Squadron with my brother during the weekends, and going to the movie theater to watch the prequel films.” Johna would get to talk to the Lucasfilm luminary again in 2018 at a special screening at Lucasfilm headquarters in front of an enthusiastic fan audience.

Headspace was created with one mission in mind: to improve the health and happiness of the world. Sleepcast listeners find themselves in an X-wing as they tour the Star Wars galaxy. Manage your emotions with Chewbacca. A depiction of Chewbacca stands in the centre of the frame surrounded by trees, referencing his home planet Kashyyyk. With each inhale and exhale, you see the forest come to life as you take some deep Wookiee-sized breaths. With each inhale, R2-D2 moves across the screen; when holding your breath, his head moves and his red and blue lights flash. Using playful animation, music and sound effects, Space to Breathe with Star Wars comes to life in one-minute exercises, enabling new and experienced meditators alike to set a mindful tone for the day, without any VO required. Happy Star Wars Day! 6 ways to celebrate May the 4th, from ... (USA TODAY)

It's Star Wars Day! Whether you're all about the nine-film Skywalker Saga or just adore Baby Yoda, here are six ways to celebrate May the 4th.

Lots of places discount their Star Wars merch on May 4, and StarWars.com has a roundup of all the coolest stuff, from Han and Leia "I love you/I know" wedding bands to Baby Yoda dashboard wavers. And next week, Obi-Wan and Anakin fans will want to check out the new novel "Star Wars: Brotherhood" set just after the "Attack of the Clones" prequel film. StarWarsKids.com is a one-stop resource for children to find out about all the characters and creatures fans love. The flagship "Star Wars" comic is currently filling in the time between "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" as Luke comes to grips with Darth Vader being his dad. “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch spinning out of the prequel-era "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which features Obi-Wan and Anakin before they turned into mortal enemies. If the newest "Star Wars" trilogy hasn't been exciting enough, the rash of recent comic books and novels – most of them pretty rad – have fleshed out stories not seen in the movies.

Star Wars Movies Ranked from Worst to Best (Den of Geek)

We take a deep dive into the galaxy far, far away to rank all of the Star Wars live-action movies to figure out which film is the best of all-time!

By adding dimensionality to its boy hero, who now in the middle chapter of a larger saga is forced to reconsider his vainglorious ideals, and depth to his conflict with a villain who no longer seems so simple in one of the greatest movie twists of all-time, Empire Strikes Back creates an interiority for its archetypes, as well as stakes that are a little more primal and tangible than “save the galaxy.” Nerd culture just wouldn’t be the same without the story of a young Luke Skywalker learning the ways of the Force and taking on the evil Empire with all of his friends. Not only does this tale of underdogs fighting oppression feel universal and poignant to this day, but A New Hope is also visually stunning, an absolute trailblazer in terms of what could be done with practical effects in the late ’70s. In fact, watching this movie in 2022 still feels like a timeless experience. However, the heart and strength of Luke’s story still shine bright in Return of the Jedi. It’s a movie that seems to say something different at any age at which you watch it, depending on where you are in your own life journey compared to Luke’s burdened self-discovery. With a great ensemble cast of characters, Rogue One has an adult edge most Star Wars movies lack, and a stark visceral scale in which the power of the Empire never seemed more looming. It’s a genuine war movie about sacrifice and embracing an ideal, and unlike most other Disney Star Wars movies, the fan service (here involving a particular Dark Lord of the Sith) is literally killer. Clocking in at nearly a full 10 minutes of acrobatic somersaults, lightsaber slashes, and pure unbridled fury, the duel is one of the few moments in the Prequels that rises to the occasion of John Williams’ awe-inspiring score. The participation of Jango Fett in the clone saga connects bounty hunter Boba Fett and the Mandalorians to the rest of the Star Wars universe, integral parts of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Add in the innovative use of digital effects, especially with Yoda, and it becomes clear that Attack of the Clones plays a pivotal role in the past and future of the franchise. Making Han and Leia’s child the antagonist was a clever reversal of the Original Trilogy’s big twist, and helped elevate The Force Awakens into one of the most talked-about movies of its time. The rest of Revenge of the Sith is very much the same mixed bag as its predecessors, but from the moment Darth Sidious mutters “execute order 66” on, the film presents some of the most exciting action in the entire Star Wars saga. Though the films are technically impressive and their depiction of a slowly eroding republic has aged quite nicely, The Phantom Menace and Attack of Clones really did amount to a lot of time-killing before getting to the main event that Star Wars fans had waited decades to see: Kenobi vs. It’s all a matter of what you want from the galaxy far, far away, and J.J. Abrams’ final love letter to George Lucas’ Original Trilogy of space fantasy films is exactly what some fans wanted after Rian Johnson tried to set the franchise on a new course with The Last Jedi.

Obi-Wan and Anakin team up in the Clone Wars in new 'Star Wars ... (Space.com)

Fabled Jedi Knights unite against sinister forces in this latest “Star Wars” book from Del Rey.

That being said, this is a literal dream project for me, as I love the complexity of both the Clone Wars era and Anakin Skywalker as a character. For Anakin, it's carrying over the motif of the sun-dragon from Matthew Stover's “Revenge of the Sith” novelization and grounding it into Anakin's childhood and his relationship with his mother. Mike Chen: I've been pretty vocal with my agent about wanting to do a character-focused story for the prequel era, so on the business side of things, it really started with that and my short story in the "From A Certain Point Of View" anthology. The two knights must learn a new way to work together—and they must learn quickly, to save Cato Neimoidia and its people from the fires of war. As Obi-Wan investigates with the help of a heroic Neimoidian guard, he finds himself working against the Separatists who hope to draw the planet into their conspiracy—and senses the sinister hand of Asajj Ventress in the mists that cloak the planet. The Jedi dispatch Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the Order’s most gifted diplomatic minds, to investigate the crime and maintain the balance that has begun to dangerously shift.

5 Highlights from the Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer (Star Wars)

Obi-Wan Kenobi, starting May 27 on Disney+, follows Ewan McGregor's legendary Jedi Master 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The ...

As seen in the new trailer, the hunt is on for the Jedi — and Obi-Wan in particular. The official trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi has arrived in celebration of May the 4th, and it’s filled with new imagery and details from the upcoming limited series. Stormtroopers stalk the streets, and the Empire’s Jedi-hunting Inquisitors lead the charge. Obi-Wan Kenobi, starting May 27 on Disney+, follows Ewan McGregor’s legendary Jedi Master 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The Empire reigns and the few surviving Jedi are in hiding, with Kenobi living in secret on Tatooine and watching over Luke Skywalker from afar. These are the dark times, indeed. While Obi-Wan delivered a newborn Luke Skywalker to Owen Lars, the Tatooine moisture farmer — and stepbrother of Anakin Skywalker — seems to want nothing more to do with Kenobi. It’s a sentiment that draws a straight line to his concerns in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Our Favorite Star Wars Memories (Star Wars)

To celebrate Star Wars Day, some current StarWars.com writers reflect on their favorite moments as Star Wars fans.

Several years later, I attended my first red carpet event: the Solo: A Star Wars Story world-premiere in Hollywood, California. And that C-3PO action figure was there with me, safely tucked into my coat pocket, to commemorate my first step into that larger world. After so many missed opportunities, I finally got to see Star Wars for the first time, under the stars, at a drive-in movie theater: the Twin-Do drive-in in Metairie, Louisiana. While that specific theater is no longer in existence, the memory has lasted a lifetime and has spring-boarded my love for this mythology into countless moments and experiences. I fought the temptation to blurt out anything about Star Wars and totally derail the table-wide conversation (for a behind-the-scenes Star Wars nerd like me, this was next to impossible). At the end of the dinner, Gary walked over to me. He was a gentleman, and a member of that small and elite unit who helped make Star Wars what it was and what it is today. In my teenage years I was the proud owner of a portable CD player, and there was only one thing I wanted to listen to with it. Whether I was on a school bus in the dark morning hours or curled up under a blanket, I took my CD player and Star Wars along as my personal soundtrack. When I wanted to “watch” Star Wars, I loaded up the first disc, closed my eyes, and replayed the movie in my imagination. Through a message board for Star Wars literature fans, I made friends with some Czech fans, helping them with some translations, and got to meet a few of them in person when I visited Prague in 2004. And that was the start of my lifelong love of Star Wars. – Dustin Diehl One of my earliest memories is going to see a re-release of Return of the Jedi in Manhattan with them in 1985, taking all my action figures and lining them up on one seat, and then watching the movie perched from my dad’s lap. That first movie theater experience was the spark that lit my passion for the Star Wars universe. On Star Wars Day, there are countless ways to celebrate the Star Wars fan community and the the saga that unites us.

Disney's 'Obi-Wan' Is Set To Resolve A Lingering 'Star Wars' Plot Hole (Forbes)

The first film, A New Hope, establishes that Luke Skywalker's journey began on Tatooine, where he meets “Ben” Kenobi, a harmless hermit dressed in ragged robes, ...

The series will feature Moses Ingram as Reva, a former Jedi, now of the Empire’s Inquisitors, who seems determined to track down Obi-Wan, and seems to share a personal history with him. Lastly, it is believed that Tatooine is such a backwater planet, floating in the middle of nowhere, that Vader’s forces wouldn’t even bother to look there. Even Boba Fett’s greatest ambition was to rule the “backwater” planet.

The Future of Star Wars Gaming: May 2022 Roundup (The Cosmic Circus)

Anthony covers Star Wars related gaming updates to Fortnite, the rumored Jedi Fallen Order sequel, and future projects yet to be titled.

Many other exciting projects are on the way like the ones Amy Hennig’s Skydance New Media and Ubisoft recently announced (both untitled). In addition, there is a remake of Knights of the Old Republic which could make a 2022 release. If the Force is with us, maybe even a first glance at some gameplay or a very short teaser. Obi-Wan Kenobi drops on Disney+ on May 27th, and it’s time to feel the might of both the Dark and Light sides. In brilliant timing for marketing, Fortnite has brought back many skins (listed) for Star Wars Celebration (May 26-29). They’ve seen an increase in player base with the inclusion of the “no-build mode” of the popular battle royale shooter. The teaser clip highlights his famous blue saber and has a slight zoom-out effect showing the wielder having the high ground. Previously, Din Djarin was an in-game boss and would drop a rifle and jet pack for your loadout.

Behind the Panels of Marvel's Star Wars: Obi-Wan #1 ... (Star Wars)

Star Wars: Obi-Wan #1 artist Ario Anindito reveals never-before-seen art, including concept sketches, page layouts, and more with his own insights.

His ‘lost years’ are always fascinating for many of us Star Wars fans, and I think his adventure in this book is one important piece of the puzzle that shaped him to become what he is.” And at the same time he’s also fragile, but he’s very determined to be brave and overcome his fragility. “In order to make her distinctive, I gave her long black hair and a pair of ‘devil horns,’ so that she looks evil, but in style. “In the second part is the ‘story from the journal,’ so I changed the style. She’s way more brave and mature than kid Obi, and that’s what I put in her expressions, and it set her apart from kid Obi. There is no doubt in her. How she’s sad, and holds onto the pendant dearly because it reminds her of those she longs for. “For the pendant, there was no specific description about it other than it’s made from rare and valuable Eadun silver. “I wanted to give a different treatment to those two parts, so I made the first part in pencil, not inked, and looking more rough. He collects stuff that he sees fit, and he brought all the stuff he needs for his adventure. To mark the Star Wars Day release of Obi-Wan #1, StarWars.com caught up with Anindito, who opened up his sketchbook and shared his early explorations and penciled pages for a look at the making of the issue, while providing commentary for his process. I imagine her as a combination of a female wolf and a serpent, lurking in the shadow and observing. The overall tone in the first pages is also very yellow and dusty, in contrast with the second part.”
