'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Feels Like the Last Hope for Star Wars Under Disney (CNET)

In the very first Star Wars movie, released back in 1977, Luke Skywalker is cleaning his newly acquired droid R2D2. In the process, he accidentally triggers ...

Within the tight confines of the Star Wars universe there's space in the Obi-Wan timeline for something different: new characters, new enemies, new planets. I'm an enemy of nostalgia-bait in almost all the media I consume, but I suspect it could be fun to return to the prequel aesthetic with a new set of collectively aging eyeballs. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a central character in the Star Wars universe, and he's played by one of Hollywood's biggest stars. Stumbling from one fan service cameo to the next like a decaying zombie in search of brains. Reason 2: We have a generation of Star Wars fans hankering for a different type of nostalgia. In the wake of Rise of Skywalker we've seen Star Wars do little but pander to an audience desperate to bask in nostalgia. We've devolved into a cursed collective that judges the quality of shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett based on the quality of its cameos. It looked, felt and played like a movie written by a toxic Reddit thread gone sentient and it undid every bold decision made in The Last Jedi. It was the first nail in the coffin of my own Star Wars fandom, but it wouldn't be the last. In 2022 we have a group of thirtysomethings who grew up alongside the prequel trilogy. In perhaps the best Star Wars scene ever put on film, Yoda stands in front of a blazing fire he himself started. Rise of Skywalker, a cobbled-together spreadsheet of a movie, was the end result. Maybe the defining line in a series packed with them.

Obi-Wan and Anakin team up in the Clone Wars in new 'Star Wars ... (Space.com)

Fabled Jedi Knights unite against sinister forces in this latest “Star Wars” book from Del Rey.

That being said, this is a literal dream project for me, as I love the complexity of both the Clone Wars era and Anakin Skywalker as a character. For Anakin, it's carrying over the motif of the sun-dragon from Matthew Stover's “Revenge of the Sith” novelization and grounding it into Anakin's childhood and his relationship with his mother. Mike Chen: I've been pretty vocal with my agent about wanting to do a character-focused story for the prequel era, so on the business side of things, it really started with that and my short story in the "From A Certain Point Of View" anthology. The two knights must learn a new way to work together—and they must learn quickly, to save Cato Neimoidia and its people from the fires of war. As Obi-Wan investigates with the help of a heroic Neimoidian guard, he finds himself working against the Separatists who hope to draw the planet into their conspiracy—and senses the sinister hand of Asajj Ventress in the mists that cloak the planet. The Jedi dispatch Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the Order’s most gifted diplomatic minds, to investigate the crime and maintain the balance that has begun to dangerously shift.

Disney Plus' Obi-Wan Kenobi show is the old Star Wars' only hope (Tom's Guide)

Happy Star Wars day! Let's talk about the future of the galaxy far, far away, as our streaming editor thinks Disney Plus' Obi-Wan Kenobi show has a huge ...

The better this movie is, the more optimism I (and anyone else still rinsing the taste of The Book of Boba Fett out of their mouth) have for the future of Star Wars stuff. You can either have fun with The Mandalorian and any new Star Wars characters he introduces us to, or you can be stuck in the past and slog your way through. Fans of that show told me how much they loved it, and it was clear that they were coming to the show with a much greater appreciation for the character than I am. And it's creating a dividing line between the Star Wars stuff I think will be good, and the star warts that I will quietly do my best to overlook. But wait, there is another … Star Wars. While I walked into the launch of Disney Plus thinking "what, a Star Wars show?" Last Sunday, as I talked about the current state of all things Star Wars with some fellow nerds, I realized I wasn't sure if I'd finished The Book of Boba Fett or not.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi New Trailer Released for Star Wars Day (Comicbook.com)

It's Star Wars Day, and Disney+ has released a new trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi. At long last, Obi-Wan Kenobi has returned to the Star Wars universe.

"The new technology that we employed doing it is cool, and it was a different experience than making the original three films that I did." After Alec Guiness originated the role of the beloved Jedi in Star Wars: A New Hope, Ewan McGregor stole the hearts of fans as a younger version of the character throughout the prequel trilogy. With Hayden Christensen also returning as Anakin/Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi has become perhaps the most anticipated Star Wars project in the pipeline.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's new “May the 4th” trailer is here, and it looks intense (Polygon)

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, and will feature Obi-Wan’s former friend and future killer, Anakin Skywalker, whom we see pieced together as Darth Vader in yet another tease of the Sith Lord. (Last time, all we got was Vader breathing!) Hayden Christensen returns to reprise the role. Lucasfilm’s new trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi offers a glimpse at some of the rest of the cast, including Kumail Nanjiani (who may also be a Jedi?) and Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars, who seems none too happy to see Kenobi show up and want to train a very young Luke Skywalker. Also, is that 4-LOM? Hey, buddy! A new trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi, ol’ Ben’s stand-alone six-episode series coming to Disney Plus on May 27, doesn’t reveal too much more about the story of the in-hiding Jedi Master — but it does offer a glimpse at the intensity of the Empire’s hunt for one of the last remaining practitioners of the Force. Or is there another?

I’m very excited for McGregor to reprise his role and curious to see how Hayden Christensen does as Darth Vader, 17 years after The Revenge of the Sith. His old friend and new nemesis, Darth Vader (aka Anakin Skywalker) stands on a rocky plateau in miniature close to the Jedi’s heart—a bit of symbolism that should not be lost on viewers. The fact is, we’ve had enough of Tatooine and then some.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Breakdown: Darth Vader, 4-LOM ... (Den of Geek)

Obi-Wan Kenobi faces off against the Darth Vader, Inquisitors, bounty hunters, and stormtroopers in the latest trailer for the upcoming Star Wars series!

And here’s a shot of the Fifth Brother from the back. We get a first look at two new droids featured in the series. Above you can see some kind of battle droid shooting at stormtroopers in a cave. We even get a look at the actual bounty, and it’s nice to see Revenge of the Sith Obi-Wan again. Rupert Friend’s Grand Inquisitor was the subject of much debate when the first teaser dropped a few weeks back. Reva replies, “Maybe you’ve been looking in the wrong places,” at which point the trailer cuts to the shot above. He was first introduced in The Empire Strikes Back as one of the mercenaries hired by Darth Vader to hunt down Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon. Opening fire on the Inquisitors on their home turf seems like a really bad idea… Obi-Wan Kenobi will introduce a new kind of stormtrooper to live-action. In the first teaser, we saw Obi-Wan getting shot at from both sides during this gunfight. While the first teaser only featured the ominous sound of Vader’s breathing, this new trailer finally shows us the iconic villain in the flesh…or what’s left of it, anyway. Before we unpack all the teases and easter eggs, have a watch if you haven’t already:

As seen in the new trailer, the hunt is on for the Jedi — and Obi-Wan in particular. The official trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi has arrived in celebration of May the 4th, and it’s filled with new imagery and details from the upcoming limited series. Stormtroopers stalk the streets, and the Empire’s Jedi-hunting Inquisitors lead the charge. Obi-Wan Kenobi, starting May 27 on Disney+, follows Ewan McGregor’s legendary Jedi Master 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The Empire reigns and the few surviving Jedi are in hiding, with Kenobi living in secret on Tatooine and watching over Luke Skywalker from afar. These are the dark times, indeed. While Obi-Wan delivered a newborn Luke Skywalker to Owen Lars, the Tatooine moisture farmer — and stepbrother of Anakin Skywalker — seems to want nothing more to do with Kenobi. It’s a sentiment that draws a straight line to his concerns in Star Wars: A New Hope.
