Arsenal's Champions League return is within their grasp after big ... (ESPN)

Having a season without European football has been impactful for Arsenal, and that freshness has them on the inside track for a top-four finish.

They will need a bigger, better squad to compete on two fronts, but this one is suddenly ticking along in the Premier League promisingly once again. While you've got a young team and you're trying to get a good enough squad together ... even last year, Arsenal were in the semifinal of the Europe League last year, we're in it this year, and it became quite a difficult season for them because of that. Takehiro Tomiyasu returned to the line-up only to later hobble off injured, while Nuno Tavares had one of those all-action afternoons in which he looks simultaneously a threat and a liability in almost every passage of play. With their next attack, Saka forced Fabianski to turn a low shot behind at his near post and from the resulting corner, Gabriel eventually scored. They have won just four of their past 14 games in all competitions as exertions at home and abroad begin to catch up with them. LONDON -- It has long felt as though Arsenal's absence from Europe this season would provide them a telling advantage at some stage, and Sunday's 2-1 win at West Ham was it.

West Ham vs Arsenal: Player ratings and analysis as Gabriel and ... (iNews)

It's advantage Arsenal in the race for the Champions League after a 2-1 victory at the London Stadium.

- Xhaka – 6 - Elneny – 6 - Soucek – 6 - Antonio – 6 - Zouma – 6 - Coufal – 6 Gabriel was the beneficiary of West Ham’s largesse on this occasion, converging on Martinelli’s cross unattended and planting his header in the net via the leg of Fabianski. Interestingly, in an entirely co-incidental episode, Saka was booked for a trip on Bowen two minutes into the second half. Saka swung it in and Holding rose unchallenged to make a statue of Lukasz Fabianski. Mikel Arteta went through his Riverdance routine in the technical area as if the goal were the fruit of some grand design. In the absence of the brittle Thomas Partey, Arsenal’s promising three ball of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are starved of quick ball. West Ham, having played 30 per cent more games than Arsenal, care of their ongoing European involvement, rested the influential Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio seemingly without impact. Such is the chasm in quality beneath Manchester City and Liverpool you wonder what the point might be other than the PR benefit associated with Champions League participation.

West Ham had nothing left and they were fortunate that Nketiah did not add to the scoreline from any of three breakaways. When the ball ran through to the far side, Martinelli returned it towards the back post. Ramsdale threw up a hand to keep out Rice’s near-post flick from a Pablo Fornals corner and it came when Rice picked out Coufal, who cut back for Bowen. The striker’s first touch set up the shot and the technique on it was excellent, conjuring power, the ball flicking off Magalhães and beating Ramsdale. It was his 16th goal of the season – and 10th in the league. Moyes asked Aaron Cresswell to play on the left in a central defensive two, with Ryan Fredericks away from his preferred flank at left-back and Bowen filling in up front. It was simply about the result. To the Arsenal manager it was not about how the victory came or in what kind of style.

And the lads have a chance to make it even better and give us more to celebrate with the remaining four matches. They’ve managed it with matches to spare and while fielding the youngest average starting lineup in the Premier League. They are eight points better this season over the corresponding matches from last year and have already bettered the points haul. Arsenal still have plenty to play for this season. You could look at the remaining matches and give multiple reasons why each team will or will not be motivated to put in a good performance, regardless of whether they appear to have something to play for or not. Arsenal have their sights set on a 4th place finish and a return to the Champions League. The task is straightforward - win out, qualify for the CL. Or win three and draw Spurs, qualify for the Champions League. Arsenal are two points ahead of Tottenham with the same number of remaining games and a North London Derby on May 12th. Tottenham have a significantly better goal difference (7) than Arsenal, so unless the final four matches somehow erase that, if the two sides finish tied on points, Spurs finish higher.

Arsenal happy to win ugly but they must stop teams targeting Tavares (The Guardian)

Mikel Arteta's side were far from their best at West Ham but they showed signs of growing up at the London Stadium.

All the same Arsenal still found a way here, taking advantage of West Ham’s lack of height through set-piece goals from Holding and Gabriel Magalhães. And to give him his due Tavares was still surging at the end, winning a crucial header in his area before starting a counterattack. He was hooked during the first half against Nottingham Forest in January, substituted early against Crystal Palace last month and was very fortunate only to give away one penalty against Manchester United last weekend, while against West Ham he spent large portions of the game simply knocking easy passes straight out of play, needlessly putting his team under pressure. Is he soon to be found hiding in a laundry basket on a big Champions League night at the Emirates? There is certainly something about Arsenal that rubs opponents up the wrong way. With Kieran Tierney out for the season, Tavares is a worry for Arteta. When Tottenham watch this game they will know where to attack Arsenal in next week’s pivotal north London derby. West Ham were repeatedly finding space down that flank, repeatedly running through the same passing sequences to send Vladimir Coufal away, and it was not much of a surprise that Tavares was caught out eventually, the Portuguese’s positioning all over the place when Jarrod Bowen cancelled out Arsenal’s lead on the stroke of half-time. Midway through the first half of an utterly forgettable London derby, Nuno Tavares picked up the ball near the halfway line and set off on an adventure.

Well, mathematically everything is open so, we’re going to have to go to Leeds and win again because everybody is going to put pressure because everybody wants to play in the position that we are right now. I think I would be wasting my time because you know the players, the staff, everybody is with their phones and they all know. Those performances have been really consistent throughout the season, defending and now scoring really important goals for us, which is an add on that you hope to have in your centre defenders but it’s easy to find. Tomiyasu is just that he had been out for so long and could not continue. It’s a massive win, under very difficult circumstances because we put ourselves in real problems, especially with our decision making and in ball possessions, and the spaces we were attacking, and the timing of it and the efficiency of it. The way they fought, the way they understood how they have to manage the game in certain moments, with the way we defended, because we didn't concede anything, it was phenomenal.

It was clearly communicated to me that it had nothing to do with my performance and was therefore difficult to accept at first. But as I said, there's no reason to feel sorry for yourself. Although Turner himself along with his current club New England Revolution confirmed he would be joining the Gunners this summer, Arsenal have remained tight-lipped on any potential deal until now. However, the club did agree summer deals for MLS duo Matt Turner and Austin Trusty, who are set to arrive in time for pre-season. Well thankfully, Arsenal have pretty much confirmed a new signing before the season has even finished.

However, Arsenal’s interest quickly ended, and he stayed on Merseyside. And when the Gunners made a woeful start to this campaign, losing their opening three matches and Calvert-Lewin scoring three goals during that period, it looked to have been a questionable decision for Arteta’s men not to pursue a deal. Arsenal’s interest in the striker dates back to the summer of 2021 when he was off the back of scoring 21 goals in all competitions, the best return of his career. Injuries and a loss of form have restricted the England striker to just three Premier League goals this season and his struggles were highlighted when he was left on the bench for the victory over Chelsea on Sunday.

The only thing that went for him was it was classed as no contact." Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day after the Gunners beat Manchester United last month, Wright said: “Xhaka was magnificent, Odegaard did his stuff again, but Elneny - for someone that last played before Chelsea was in December - he came in today…dependable, professional, he never lets the team down. The former Basel midfielder is into the final two months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium and his recent performances may prove that he deserves a new short-term deal. Arsenal given simple decision over Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre ... (Daily Express)

ARSENAL need to keep one of Eddie Nketiah or Alexandre Lacazette - and it has become clear who is the leading candidate to stay.

But Nketiah's ability to run in behind creates a lot of his chances - something Lacazette has not got the pace to do. Arsenal will sign a striker this summer and Nketiah may not be the answer to all their problems in that position. It is fair to say he has not been a favourite with Arsenal fans. However, Nketiah has shown in recent weeks that he is deserving of a new deal. Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are in the same position but at different points of their careers. Mikel Arteta says talks will be held in the summer about Lacazette's future but it looks increasingly likely that he will be on his way.

I could certainly see Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs being interested in Saka, Smith Rowe and Martinelli — they have a chance of getting into one of those clubs in the next four or five years if they keep developing. “[I will] give all the support in the world to them because they need it. The three players are just a few of the youngsters that have all made an impact so far, turning their fortunes around from last season’s disappointing finish.

Thomas Partey has sent a tweet that Arsenal fans may like (HITC)

It was thought that Thomas Partey would be ruled out for the season when he went down with a thigh problem a few weeks ago.

Partey returning from injury would be a huge bonus for Arsenal. With just four games of the season to go, the Gunners need their best players available, and Partey certainly fits into that category. Not only has Partey suggested that he’ll be back soon in this tweet, he’s also sparked up the idea of a potential partnership developing between himself and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Indeed, the Gunners’ official social media account tweeted a clip of Gabriel Martinelli assisting Gabriel Magalhaes on Sunday, and Partey’s reply seemingly hints that he’ll be back playing before the season is out.

Elneny may not be the calibre of player that Arteta is targeting for the future, but he's a solid utility player to have around. "Elneny has been at the club a long time now so he should feel comfortable. Arsenal have also been linked with an ambitious move for Wolves star Ruben Neves, but Elneny has emerged as the perfect short-term solution for his recent performances. Arsenal have been targeting a new midfielder, and were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes in January. Arsenal cruised against the Red Devils too, and Elneny shone against West Ham on Sunday, as the Gunners have completed a miraculous turnaround. The Egyptian has been linked with a move away in each of the past two transfer windows, but it's a good job for Arteta that he stayed.
