Melbourne's carries out of dummy half are setting the tone in their attack with 89 the most in the competition so far. Ponga was enormous against the Dragons but was part of a non-existent Knights attacking system last week. Their 70-point showing against the Warriors was fascinating to watch with 56 of those points coming in one half of football for an NRL record.

Knights slump to bottom of NRL ladder as Storm pile on 50 points (The Sydney Morning Herald)

A penalty goal was the only joy for Newcastle fans as Adam O'Brien's side recorded a sixth straight loss, the latest to a Melbourne side who have scored 120 ...

It was certainly a questionable decision. When the Knights opened by kicking the ball out on the full it was a sign of things to come. Olam got the ball 20 metres out from Newcastle’s line and was heavily marked in a stationary position. When Ryan Papenhuyzen curled in a conversion to make it 42-2, the Knights slipped below the Bulldogs to 16th on the ladder. Newcastle’s defence was mediocre in the middle of the park last week against Parramatta and it was the same story on Sunday as Olam barged over in the second minute. The Knights have failed to score a try in their last two games.

As far as I was concerned I wasn't too happy with our defence in the first half but I was pleased with our effort in the second half." The only answer is to stick together and fight our way out of it. I thought we tried harder but our start ... our first 17 minutes the Storm made 12 tackles to our 75. You can never fall asleep on Jahrome Hughes with the Storm halfback creating something out of nothing in the first half to set up the side's dominant lead. It was the second straight week the Knights have only scored two points in a match. Moeroa then left the field with a shoulder concern.

Newcastle Knights hit sad new low (NEWS.com.au)

The Newcastle Knights have snatched wooden spoon favouritism from the Bulldogs by capitulating at the hands of the Melbourne Storm.

Down 26-2 at the break, the Knights needed to be first to score but once again handed Melbourne a free pass into enemy territory. It was only 10 points, but the Knights were visibly shaken and never regained their composure. Knights five-eighth Jake Clifford put the kick-off out on the full and then gave his first kick in play the same treatment. After 60 minutes, they’d made only four kicks in play. Losing Kurt Mann and Dane Gagai in the days before the game didn’t help either. The Newcastle Knights are sitting on the bottom of the ladder for the first time since they “won” three wooden spoons in a row in the mid 2010s.

Knights last in NRL after Storm flogging (7NEWS.com.au)

Melbourne have flogged Newcastle 50-2 to leave the hapless Knights last on the NRL ladder after a sixth defeat in a row.

"Like the rest of the team Jake is lacking a bit of confidence out there," O'Brien said. Newcastle also watched the kick-off to the second half go dead to hand over possession and another try, while their only points came via a penalty goal on the stroke of halftime. While the Warriors on Saturday rebounded from their 70-10 mauling at the hands of Melbourne last week, there was no such turnaround for the Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium.
