Koschitzke gets the Hawks off to the perfect start in the second half, converting a set shot from 40m out directly in front in the opening minutes.

LIVE AFL: Fast-starting Hawks chased down with moment of 'pure unadulterated theft'

The Demons continued to press in the opening term, adding goals to Tom McDonald and Toby Bedford - his first in the AFL. “What was he doing trying to mark that? they are giving themselves every chance. “I don’t think (Clayton’s) had two fumbles in the year – he’s had two fumbles today - one in the middle to start the game and one there,” commentator Garry Lyon lamented. Jacob Koschitzke kicked the first for the game - and extended the Hawks’ run of first goal to six straight matches. Earlier, a moment of “pure unadulterated theft” has given Melbourne the lead in their clash with Hawthorn at the MCG.

Depleted Dees scrape home against improving Hawks (AFL)

Melbourne remains undefeated in 2022 after beating the rising Hawks at the MCG.

With five players in health and safety protocols, the 21-year-old got his opportunity on Saturday. He hit the scoreboard in the opening quarter, added a second in the third quarter. When you consider how good the 27-year-old is, it is somewhat surprising it has taken him so long to get to this milestone, but he is now entrenched as one of the premier backmen in the game. He came on in round one, but was unused in the past five weeks. Yze maintained the 100 per cent record, doing his chances of one day becoming a senior coach no harm in the process. Sicily is yet to earn an All-Australian blazer but he might have one by the end of September if he continues this form. Yze is the fifth assistant coach to take charge of his team in 2022.

Demons fight off Hawks without coach to remain undefeated (The Age)

The reigning premiers, who were without coach Simon Goodwin and a host of players due to a COVID-19 breakout, appeared in third gear for most of the contest ...

Within the first four minutes of the game they had a two-goal lead, first via Koschitzke and then off the boot of Luke Breust. But missed chances prevented them from being further ahead. It would have been a great win for our boys, and I think we still take some belief out of that performance, but they’re the benchmark for a reason, and we just weren’t able to sustain it. “He sent some options or opportunities for us to change the way that we were playing, and obviously, we did that because he’s the senior coach. Melbourne led the clearances 19-12, and the contested possessions 75-67. You come up against a team that hasn’t been beaten for a long time. Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Max Gawn led all comers heading into the final quarter, while Dylan Moore and James Sicily continued their good form for the Hawks. Young guns Moore, Jai Newcombe and Jacob Koschitzke - who are all 22 and under - gave fans plenty to be pleased about. But the Dees took ascendancy of the momentum late in the first term and kicked two goals just before quarter-time to even the ledger. Melbourne’s medi-sub Kade Chandler replaced Joel Smith at three-quarter time after the defender was sidelined with an ankle injury. But he was terrific, he let me coach the way I wanted to coach, and he was just there in the background.” Smith was seen on crutches in the final term. The Hawks were spirited early but didn’t capitalise on all of their opportunities, and also had a few chances late to put the Demons under some scoreboard pressure, but Melbourne did enough in the clinches to win their 14th straight game.

Melbourne v Hawthorn - The Analyst's Corner - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

The Hawks were gallant, but the Dees were... well, they were the Dees, as they moved to their 14th-straight win. Jimmy Day has the review.

The Hawks were able to score 26 times from 50 entries and make the Dees work harder than they have for a while in D50. In the end, their experience, skill, and structure won out. The Hawks have a good blend of youth and experience and are looking good for the future. Toby Bedford got to take off the sub vest and start in the 22 today. And Mitchell obviously believes in his players to be willing to make a considerable change with the game on the line. They just work so well in the air and on the ground. He kicked his first two goals in league footy, and had a great moment in Q2 that lead to a goal. Their defence has many strings to their bow and are the bedrock for their success. It’s a sign of trust from the players and belief from the coach to change things up mid-game. He showed that he is a leader, and one worth following through all he did on the ground today. The Hawks, in a changing of the guard season, have shown incredible glimpses amongst the patches of brilliance and being overrun. We can remember Huddo and his iconic calls “THIRTEEEEN!” and “The miracle on grass” spring to mind. They know what to do and when to do it.
