Newcastle United v Liverpool: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: The title race heads for Tyneside as in-form Newcastle entertain Jürgen Klopp and co.

The weather is wonderful and so is the atmosphere. 2 mins: Saint-Maximin curls in a cross from the left. 6 mins: Liverpool have a free-kick on the left after Jota is fouled. Liverpool, however, have a decent record of their own, having dropped two points in the past 13 matches. 8 mins: Liverpool are getting a foothold in the match after Newcastle’s early pressure. The ball goes out to Keita, who plays a one-two and then goes round Dubravka to whack it into the net from six yards. There’s an intensity to Newcastle, on and off the pitch. Krafth beats Mane to the ball but it does not matter as the flag is raised for offside. The Brazilian decides against playing it long and just knocks it out for a throw-in before Saint-Maximin can dispossess him. Marriner waves play on after a Milner challenge leaves Schar on the deck. Newcastle need to speed things up again in the hope of disrupting Liverpool. The opener - a fine finish from Keita - was thoroughly deserved for the visitors.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Player ratings, analysis and reaction as ... (iNews)

Jurgen Klopp's decision to make five changes was vindicated as Naby Keita's first-half finish sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League.

“If it is a positive sign for the boys, then great, but I don’t think this will be the one decisive thing for whatever decision they have to make. “It was difficult, the only plan they had obviously was long balls to our right side… “I thought Joe Gomez was different class and like Milly (James Milner) said we need everyone in the squad. Sandwiched between those two chances was a rare Newcastle effort on target, when Alisson denied his Brazilian compatriot and Newcastle’s man of the moment Bruno Guimaraes with a comfortable save down to his right. Much to Klopp’s frustration, Liverpool continued to be wasteful in front of goal, with Jota firing straight at Dubravka when a calmer head was required. At the other end, Jota drew a spectacular stop from Dubravka with a powerful header that is quickly becoming his signature move.

Sadio Mane squandered another promising Liverpool attack in the 60th minute, pushing his effort wide of the goal after a terrific run from Joe Gomez down the right wing. The midfielder finished off a slick move on 19 minutes, which started with a James Milner challenge on Fabian Schar that Newcastle thought was a foul. Despite Liverpool's dominance, Newcastle looked spritely when they had the ball, and came close to finding an equaliser in the 87th minute when Guimaraes found space on the edge of the box and fired a low shot, but Alisson covered it well and Liverpool held on to secure the three points.

In a few situations we could have done better, but at this time of the season it’s all about getting that win and moving on. My job is to use the squad when they are available and that's what we do. "The position we’re in, challenging on all fronts, it proves you need a good squad. "Individually I don't think we hit our top levels, which meant collectively we didn't quite hit the levels we have recently. It was a similar story in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Benfica. They’re on fire at the moment so we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. On making five changes for the game: "I don't think about the next game, but I know you cannot ignore that. His energy and intensity is proving invaluable for Liverpool as the season enters a crunch period. But this was just the latest in a run of impressive displays. We’ve just got to keep that mindset going and, in three days, go again." In the heart of defence we were light on bodies. Keita's eye-catching all-round display made him the game's stand-out performer.

"The boys who didn't come on today, you should’ve seen their faces on the bench when the final whistle went. That's the only reason -- the boys buy completely into the situation. The group is exceptional." The two teams drew 2-2 in the league in early April before Liverpool edged their rivals 3-2 in the FA Cup semi-finals -- they could also meet in the final of the Champions League. "That's the only reason why we are where we are," he said. At the other end of the table, managerless Burnley produced a stunning comeback against Watford to win 2-1 and pull five points clear of the relegation zone, condemning Norwich to the drop.

Liverpool Rest Stars Deliver Crucial Win Against Newcastle (We Are Hooligans)

In the ultra close Premier League title race, Liverpool rest star players yet deliver a crucial victory over Newcastle United.

In fact, since January 2, the only result that has harmed Liverpool in any way was the 2-2 draw at Manchester City. A crucial second leg match against Villareal in the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night awaits, where Liverpool are up 2-0 after the first leg win. In fact, it was the first time this Premier League season that Klopp fielded a team without one of Fabinho, Thiago, Alexander-Arnold, or Salah in the starting XI.

Keita fires Liverpool back above Man City (7NEWS.com.au)

Naby Keita has scored the winner in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Newcastle which puts them - temporarily at least - back to the top of the Premier League.

Jota was denied by Dubravka three times in the second half and Sadio Mane planted a shot wide from a good position in his final meaningful involvement before being replaced by Salah. Newcastle had a Miguel Almiron goal rightly disallowed for offside and otherwise struggled to create any openings, with Liverpool going close to a second before halftime when Jota's header was palmed over. Naby Keita has scored the only goal as a much-changed Liverpool beat in-form Newcastle 1-0 at St James' Park to climb above Manchester City - temporarily, at least - at the top of the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp's faith in Liverpool squad vs. Newcastle keeps ... (ESPN)

Liverpool are still fighting on three fronts because Jurgen Klopp can make as many changes to his starting XI as he did in the 1-0 win at Newcastle.

Klopp has been able to rely on each and every one of them so far, but he can't control everything and even Liverpool's undefeated run in the Premier League this calendar year may not be enough to win the title. Any failure to win in any competition will be a hammer blow to their hopes of a Quadruple, so every player has to turn up when selected. But while Liverpool's destiny is in their own hands in the Champions League and FA Cup final, where they face Chelsea at Wembley on May 14, they can only hope their best is good enough in the Premier League. For Klopp's team to win a second title in three seasons, they need City to slip up somewhere. But Milly is a role model and he has set standards in a way that have educated all of us." He is very helpful in the dressing room, especially for a manager whose native language isn't English, but he is important on the pitch too and he played a super game today. There is also a strong possibility that they will meet again, six days later, in the Champions League final in Paris; both clubs head into this week's semifinal second legs with aggregate leads against Villarreal (Liverpool lead 2-0) and Real Madrid (City lead 4-3).

Jürgen Klopp sung the praises of his talented Liverpool squad after his gamble to rotate players paid off with a 1-0 win over Newcastle.

We did 100% against a team in top form in a top atmosphere. “In the circumstances it was a top class performance. We weren’t a genuine counter-attacking threat. “We’ve improved in a lot of aspects of our play, but it shows also there’s a gap that we have to bridge to the top teams. “It was incredibly difficult for the boys today, to be honest; we played two and a half days ago,” he said. The group is exceptional, exceptionally talented and really good characters.”

NEWCASTLE: Liverpool moved back on top of the Premier League as Naby Keita's solitary goal beat Newcastle 1-0 on Saturday at St James' Park.

On the only occasions Newcastle threatened, the offside flag would have come to Liverpool’s rescue in any case. The German used his considerable quality off the bench sending on Salah, Fabinho and Thiago were introduced in the final quarter in a bid to seal the points. Dubravka went on to keep Newcastle in the game as the visitors should have avoided a nervy finale.
