West Coast's season from hell sinks even lower as Richmond completes a brutal 109-point smashing of the Eagles at Perth Stadium.
But even more diabolical was the team's continual turnovers, with Richmond feasting on the easy pickings to pile on the pain. West Coast's lack of urgency against Richmond was evident to see from the outset. A glut of injuries and a devastating COVID-19 wave have ruined West Coast's start to the season. The Tigers continued to pile on the pain in the second half to post the percentage-boosting 25.15 (165) to 8.8 (56) victory, with the result leaving West Coast on the bottom of the ladder with a 1-5 record. Since beating Richmond by four points in round 13 last year, West Coast have returned a 3-13 win-loss record to be the worst performing team over that period. Just two weeks after conceding the first 56 points of the match against Sydney, West Coast trailed Richmond 67-10 in the second term.

The Tigers, who averaged nine marks a game inside-50 before Friday night, had 15 marks inside their arc to the main break and they led by 63 points. The first-half rout included nine unanswered goals, and had Tom Lynch (3.4) been more accurate, the Tigers could have been further ahead. West Coast’s season appears in freefall after a thumping loss to Richmond on Friday night, their third successive loss exceeding 10 goals this season.

“I think the Richmond coaching group should be congratulated,” Fox Footy’s Nathan Buckley said. West Coast could only manage one goal in a “horror show” opening term. Richmond come up against West Coast and need a fill. “This is a bit like Port Adelaide, they’ve come up against the West Coast Eagles last week and needed their fill and got it. “Something to hang on to for the West Coast Eagles fans. It was a tough night for West Coast fans, but there was one moment to savour in all the carnage – veteran Josh Kennedy’s 700th AFL goal. “The challenge lays fairly at the feet of this West Coast Eagles side to dig in – I don’t know if they are capable,” Lyon said. West Coast were beaten across the ground in a Richmond “demolition” – -17 for inside 50s, -13 for hitouts and -13 for marks inside 50 in just one half of footy. In just two and a half games, statistics show West Coast have started the ball inside their forward 50 126 times – but managed to reach their inside 50 just 11 times. Brown said the onus was on the Eagles to “show some spine” in the second half. West Coast struck first to open the second half with a goal to Josh Kennedy, but it was once again matched almost immediately by the Tigers, with Shai Bolton on the end of another frighteningly easy passage of transition. By half-time, it was a 63-point lead to Richmond and the Eagles supporters were turning on their own, with key forward Jack Darling greeted with sarcastic cheers whenever he touched the ball in the second term.

The backend of the year they are going to get a hell of a lot better. We will make sure he puts the due diligence in to make sure he is ready to go when he is needed. So there is going to be plenty of opportunity for the younger players to come through and we will get a pretty clear picture of where we are at by the end of the year. I think he was terrific, his ability to jump at the ball and around the contest was great. He put a lot of work over the course of the summer. So there is going to be plenty of opportunities to get some games into some of our younger players and see where they are at. But I thought we were strong in all facets of the game tonight. We found pieces of the puzzle. We can give you reasons and excuses but we have got to look forward. So we need to stay strong and resilient behind that and like I said, you just can’t look back any more. And like I said, it is not going to happen in one week. Unfortunately, yes, tonight we butchered the ball and the turnover game, we were unable to, you know, defend behind our mistakes.

Richmond turned Optus Stadium into Tigerland, piling on goals to smash West Coast.
Maurice Rioli jnr offered an insight into his potential in his third AFL game with three goals, taking his career tally to five including two in a minute in the third term, while he also had nine score involvements. It was the Eagles' biggest loss since losing by 135 points to Geelong at Subiaco Oval in 2008. Lynch reached another milestone in his 200th AFL game, with his second major bringing up his 400th career goal. Jayden Short was handed a rare run in the midfield in Cotchin's absence and was outstanding with 31 disposals. West Coast: Rioli (hamstring) Richmond kicked 20.8 for the game from turnovers.

Maurice, 19, is the cousin of Willie, 26, and the uncle of Daniel, 25. Daniel also holds flag bragging rights over his uncle and cousin, claiming the most premiership medals out of the trio (3), while Willie has one (2018). Maurice Rioli Jr and Daniel Rioli will run out in yellow and black for the Tigers while Willie Rioli is the sole family representative in blue and gold for the Eagles.

"The problem for West Coast, you can blame COVID all you like, but there's a team in the same city as you that have been in the same circumstances in the Fremantle Dockers, who are looking magnificent," Brown said on Fox Footy after the game. "Right now at half-time as he's walking down to present to the players and have a chat, he's going, where do I go from here?" "You can only ask and put it on your players for a couple of weeks in a row and not get a response before you go, where do I go from here?

Are the Eagles one of the worst AFL teams in history? Richmond throw the magnets around and see light at the end of the tunnel.
Clearly the Eagles were adding Kelly in a bid to bolster their midfield to have a crack at another premiership. The official deal was West Coast gave pick 14, a future first (pick 18 in 2020), pick 24 and pick 37 to Geelong, who in return passed over Kelly, pick 52 and a future third. While it was a walk in the park for the Tigers, it doesn't look like they are going to fall off a cliff like West Coast any time soon. And guess what? Starting with an 8-42 deficit to Fremantle at half time in round three, West Coast trailed 70-12 against Sydney at the main break in round five, 53-10 versus Port Adelaide in round six and 79-16 against the Tigers. It's lucky West Coast somehow managed to nab a win against Collingwood because the way they are going, they will struggle to get another victory for the rest of the season.
