Most of the 825 early childhood professionals who are currently enrolled in the ECECD scholarship program will benefit from the new stipend program moving forward. On May 5, applicants for a new stipend program that pays up to $2,000 per semester to early childhood professionals who are currently enrolled in early childhood degree programs at one of New Mexico institutions of higher education can apply. Over 30,000 New Mexico families will qualify, according to the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department.
Families within the state of New Mexico are ecstatic after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that more families will be eligible for free childcare.
"My child does have to go up to doctor appointments in El Paso so that’s a lot of gas saving for me, and he goes frequently over there so I mean that puts money in my pocket for the gas,” said Holgeyn. Families who are enrolled in the state’s Childcare Assistance Program will now be eligible to get free child care if they earn up to 400% of federal poverty level, which adds up to $111,000 for a family of four. "I’m a single mom so it’s one less thing I have to sit here, 'oh I have to pay the day care at the end of the month',” said parent Alyssa Romero, who utilizes day care.
