In December 2018, the same day Heard's op-ed in the Washington Post was published, Heard announced she had taken on a role as an ACLU ambassador on women's rights. When Johnny Depp and Amber Heard reached a settlement in their divorce in 2016, Heard announced that she would be donating the entirety of her $7 million payout to charity. Insider reached out to Musk for comment on the donation in Heard's name on Thursday but did not immediately receive a response. Depp has accused Heard of ruining his reputation and career by insinuating that she had been the victim of domestic violence in a 2018 Washington Post 0p-ed. "We reached out to Heard starting in 2019 for the next installment of her giving and we learned that she was having financial difficulties," Dougherty said. - Amber Heard pledged to donate $3.5 million of her $7 million divorce settlement with Johnny Depp to the ACLU.

In his deposition, Dougherty talked of the work that the ACLU did to craft the op-ed. He said that the ACLU reached out to her at one point “and we learned that she was having financial difficulties.” But Musk had indicated in a 2016 email to the organization that Heard’s pledge would be fulfilled in installments over 10 years. The latter payment was via Heard. Another $100,000 came from Depp and was credited to Heard.

“You weren’t in love with him, and you told me a thousand times you were just filling space,” Carino wrote to Heard when she expressed sadness over their split, according to Vulture. The restraining order was dropped and when their divorce was finalized the couple released a statement saying “neither party has made false accusations for financial gain.” Depp has repeatedly denied the claims of abuse, and claimed the suggestion of him having abused Heard ruined his career. When the couple split, Heard filed a temporary restraining order against the Edward Scissorhands actor, and said he had abused her throughout their relationship.

What Happened to Amber Heard's ACLU Donations? (Vulture)

In addition to Heard's planned donation to the ACLU, she said she would donate the other half of her $7 million divorce settlement to the Children's Hospital ...

Dougherty said he had reviewed earlier drafts of Heard’s op-ed and, based upon that, “knew that they were referring to Johnny Depp [and] her marriage.” In the final edit, however, Heard’s legal team “neutered” references to her marriage and domestic violence. (Heard dated Musk after her split with Depp, though Musk was “just filling space,” according to testimony on April 27.) In addition to Heard’s planned donation to the ACLU, she said she would donate the other half of her $7 million divorce settlement to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. It was not immediately clear how much she has paid to the hospital to date. However, there have not been any concrete signs that Heard won’t eventually follow through, according to Dougherty. “I’m not aware of any indication that Ms. Heard has decided to no longer pay additional amounts,” Dougherty said in the deposition played Thursday. Doughtery also said that $500,000 of the $1.3 million donated thus far was from a charitable account that appeared to be “associated with Elon Musk” and he thought the tech billionaire had set up this account. There was some doubt around Heard paying the rest as she did not sign a “pledge form” that would make the donations legally binding, Dougherty testified. When the ACLU reached out to Heard in 2019 about future installments, Dougherty said, “We learned that she was having financial difficulties.” “She can be confident that this gift will help other women live safely and freely.” But according to a deposition played Thursday in Depp’s defamation trial against Heard, it appears that, to this day, only $1.3 million has been donated to the civil-rights nonprofit.

Attorneys for Heard have said that she was physically and sexually abused by Depp, often when he was drinking or using drugs, and the op-ed fell within her right to free speech. The op-ed in question came out of Heard's relationship with the ACLU, which named her an ambassador in October 2018. Dougherty said Heard donated $350,000 to the ACLU "very soon" after August 2016, when she said in a statement that she would donate half of the divorce settlement to the ACLU and the other half to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. At some point, her ex-husband Johnny Depp donated $100,000 to the ACLU on her behalf.

ACLU helped draft article at heart of Depp v Heard case for $3.5m ... (The Guardian)

American Civil Liberties Union's general counsel testifies that at least $500000 came from fund connected to Elon Musk.

Heard, he testified, berated Depp as Connolly led him away from the house to his own apartment where he administered first aid, saying, “Fuck off! “I’ve seen him smoke marijuana,” Connolly said. I’ve never seen him do it.” “He was not happy. The payments, which Heard requested to come tax free, would have required Depp to make $30m, White said. “You weren’t in love with him.” I can see bone.” “It’s flapping around. Depp, he surmised, was not enjoying himself. The two celebrities appeared on Heard’s publicly available witness list at the start of the trial, but Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro has said his client will not testify. It would get more regular. The Fairfax county court in Virginia was told that Heard had “spent time” with Musk while she sought to resurrect her relationship with Depp in 2016.

The defamation trial between Mr Depp and Ms Heard began on Monday 11 April in Fairfax, Virginia following Mr Depp's lawsuit against his ex-wife in March 2019.

“Why was Mr Musk representing this on behalf of Ms Heard?” Mr Dougherty was asked. The ACLU spoke to Ms Heard when Mr Depp sent a cheque to the organisation on her behalf. Mr Musk said Ms Heard preferred that the money be spent on women’s issues. Documents shown in court revealed that Ms Heard was aware of the decade-long plan. In her 2018 op-ed, Ms Heard wrote that “like many women, I had been harassed and sexually assaulted by the time I was of college age. Start your Independent Premium subscription today.

Dougherty, whose deposition was taped and played to the court, claimed Heard has only paid $350,000 out of her own pocket, with the rest of the $1.3 million eventually coming from Depp, who forked over $100,000, as well as a donor Dougherty believes was Musk. In a further twist to the saga, it is believed billionaire Tesla founder, Elon Musk, 50, chipped in nearly half of the donation, with Dougherty testifying he gave $500,000 to the civil rights group as a donor on behalf of Heard after the two began dating after her divorce. The actress received a $7 million divorce settlement from Johnny Depp, on the condition she donate it to the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and ACLU.

He also claimed the actress told the organization not to issue a press release about her pledged donation. Dougherty testified the ACLU received $350,000 directly from Heard in 2016. However, Dougherty said the organization stopped receiving payments in 2019, when they “learned that she was having financial difficulties.”

ACLU Says Amber Heard's Domestic Violence Op-Ed Aimed to ... (Variety)

Amber Heard's op-ed about domestic violence was timed to capitalize on the release of 'Aquaman,' an ACLU executive testified.

At the time of their divorce, Depp agreed to pay Heard $7 million, which she promised to donate to the ACLU and to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, with $3.5 million going to each charity. Dougherty’s testimony included internal ACLU emails about the drafting of the op-ed. Depp alleges that Heard fabricated her abuse allegations and used them to advance her own career at his expense. Dougherty explained that the publicity campaign for the film would help get more attention for the op-ed. “From the ACLU’s perspective, Amber is about to receive an incredible amount of press and be in the public eye,” Dougherty said. At the trial on Thursday, Depp’s attorneys played a video deposition of Terence Dougherty, the ACLU’s general counsel.
