Victoria stands down 420 public school teachers over vaccine ... (The Guardian)

About half had failed to get a booster shot before the March deadline and have been placed on unauthorised leave.

Some epidemiologists have called on the state to relax its vaccine mandates. In New South Wales, unvaccinated teachers will be able to begin working in the state’s schools from mid-May. The latest department of health figures show almost 95% of Victorians aged over 12 are double vaccinated. A department of spokesperson said that as of Tuesday, 99.2% of public school teachers have had three doses of a Covid vaccine and were permitted to attend work. Since the beginning of the year, unvaccinated Victorian teachers have been unable to receive leave entitlements. This means they have been placed on leave without pay and unable to work since the third dose deadline came into effect on 25 March.

Irate Aussies have reacted with fury to the news that teachers will be forced to walk off the job for not being triple-jabbed.

Stream your news live & on demand with Flash for $8/month and no lock in contracts. “I must say I’ve seen those reports, yes. “Where is the ‘science’ in this?” And one day there will be a public apology for these stupid mandates. No one should ever be forced into medical choices, yet alone by threat of losing their employment if they don’t concede.” Too late though for those who lose their jobs, livelihoods and homes now,” declared another. New to Flash? Try 1 month free. “There is no justification for these booster mandates in school settings … We’ve seen the worst of Omicron in this state and there continue to be ongoing staff shortages.” When the issue was raised with Mr Andrews, he said he had not been made aware of that “specific concern” by those in the industry. “Although some were vaccinated over the holidays, the fact that there is now a requirement for three shots means more teachers are now not meeting the mandate,” the spokesperson said. Unvaccinated teachers stood down as schools prepare to tackle winter (The Age)

Victorian teachers who failed to get fully vaccinated are being officially stood down on Thursday, as schools prepare to tackle the winter months with masks ...

I’m sure people will make the right call for themselves and their kids,” Ferra said. “We are still sanitising, we still have a small number of students and staff opting to use masks, we are highly recommending the flu vax,” she said. “There’s no way we can make schools or any other indoor setting 100 per cent safe. It’s [about] having as many layers of protection as possible.” “We often do inspections and find they aren’t on, or they are set to the lowest setting instead of set to the maximum.” “The scary side of that is it requires humans to keep them open, and that’s not going to happen in winter,” he said.

Victorian Teachers Not Boosted Set To Be Stood Down (Hit 107)

Despite the end to Victoria's strict vaccine economy, thousands of teachers could be stood down this week over Covid booster mandates.

It comes as teacher absences due to Covid continue to compound the shortage of relief teachers and casual staff. “We’ve seen the worst of Omicron in this state and there continue to be ongoing staff shortages. Around 2500 Victorian teachers and support staff who have not received a third dose of a Covid vaccine by April 28 will be let go, according to the Herald Sun.
