Dragons survive second half comeback to beat Roosters in thriller (NRL.COM)

St George Illawarra have survived a second half comeback to beat the Roosters 14-12 in the 20th ANZAC day clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

We weren’t going to go around them - they were covering that - we needed to go through them, and we just didn’t. We just couldn’t execute it. We were sending out messages to go through them, we identified a couple of spots on both sides that we wanted to attack and we did it sometimes, but we just didn’t do it enough": Roosters coach Trent Robinson. The 40/20 was the play-of-the-day but you only get a kick like that if you are still in the game and we had that resilience about us today. Everyone will remember the second half but in the first half we had to defend our line for ages and ages. “We had every reason to lose that game in the last 20 minutes but they refused to lose. I didn’t feel like we were overwhelmed, we just couldn’t execute opportunities we had in the first half or second half to peg back the points.

The Roosters dominate the second half, but it was the Ben Hunt-inspired Dragons who run out 14-12 winners at the SCG.

The result marked the Roosters' third loss of the year and their first on Anzac Day since 2018, while the Dragons have won two straight after breaking a four-match losing streak. And while the Roosters struggled to trouble the Dragons in the first half, they put themselves back in the match at 14-12 with 10 minutes to play through tries to Sitili Tupouniua and James Tedesco. The Dragons held on for several sets on their own line and let the Roosters through just twice, with the majority of the final 20 minutes played at their end.

I went down to the march this morning and you realise what you’re doing is so insignificant compared to the people we celebrate and what they did. On the only day Australians are legally allowed to play two-up, this wasn’t heads, tails or evens, and rather something else altogether. If you’re not going to put that in the bin for some of the things that have been in the bin over the last four or five weeks ... I don’t know where we go now.” We’ve been searching for it for a few weeks, but we had it today.“ Moses Suli (ankle) also struggled to finish the game. “Our defence went through the roof [in the second half] and it was good as I’ve seen a 40 minutes in Roosters jerseys. “We hung in there tight and made big plays when we needed to. It should have at least been in the bin. We had that resilience about us today. “The 40-20 was the play of the day. It was direct contact with the head. You would have got two years in jail in Magic Round last year [during the NRL’s high contact crackdown]. I’m serious.

Moses Suli was also seen limping on the left edge, however, was still on the field at the time of publication with the club saying it was a cork, and that they were hopeful he would remain on the field. Just minutes later, the Dragons found themselves losing another player with Jaydn Su'a bent awkwardly in a tackle on the right edge with 35 minutes remaining in the contest. The utility, who is playing in the halves for the Red V, was left on the ground after a collision with Joseph Suaalii during the first half.
