MCG comes alive on Anzac Day as Collingwood edge Essendon (The Guardian)

Teenage sensation Jack Ginnivan has slotted a career-best five goals to help lift Collingwood to an 11-point win over Essendon in an enthralling Anzac Day ...

Jordan De Goey (27 disposals) starred in the midfield and Jeremy Howe stood firm in defence as Brody Mihocek booted four goals. After a wayward beginning, Lance Franklin (three goals) got his side ahead for the first time with about 10 minutes left on the clock. Parish had 30 disposals and six clearances in the first half alone, helping Essendon to a 22-13 clearance advantage, but they lacked pace and penetration in possession. It gave them breathing space but the result was not settled until deep into time-on, when a 50-metre penalty against Nick Hind for moving on the mark put Brodie Grundy within range to kick the sealer. Teenage sensation Jack Ginnivan has slotted a career-best five goals to help lift Collingwood to an 11-point win over Essendon in an enthralling Anzac Day encounter. The 19-year-old had just 12 disposals but was awarded the Anzac Day medal as best afield for his match-winning haul in the traditional blockbuster.

Two marches, one winner, no losers: Anzac Day day at the footy (The Age)

If war and footy were once too glibly conflated on this day, they are no longer.

The Anzac Medal is accompanied by a highfalutin citation to say it is awarded to the player who “best exemplifies the ANZAC spirit - skill, courage, self-sacrifice, teamwork and fair play”. Neither side is in premiership calculations this year, and it was easy to see why. They’ve had a difficult season, but the way young ruckman Sam Draper lorded it over Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy for most of the match and the polished industry of Darcy Parish would have given them hope and heart. It is hard to think that this sort of martial appeal resonates much with young men in 2022. The link between the two mighty movements on this day is war, sadly at the forefront of our minds again now. As periodically happens on Anzac Day, the namesake medal was won not by a superstar, but by a kind of football arriviste, little-known 10-gamer Jack Ginnivan, who kicked five goals.
