How Russia's war in Ukraine is dividing the Orthodox Christian world (The Washington Post)

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has upended Eastern Orthodoxy, deepening religious rifts between the two countries.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. “The distance between Russia and the Western world is getting bigger. The Orthodox Church has no single leader, but Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is considered its spiritual guide and “first among equals” with the other patriarchs. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine is three years old. Soon after the invasion, Epiphanius released a statement likening the Russian leader to both the Antichrist and Adolf Hitler. For centuries, churches in Ukraine and Russia were both under the leadership of the Moscow patriarch. All of this has put the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its leader, Metropolitan Onuphury, in a precarious position, particularly as reports of civilian massacres and other atrocities mount. “This was Hitler during World War II. This is what Putin has become today.” Most of its roughly 260 million adherents are concentrated in Europe, Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union. “Such a war has no justification either from God or from people.” Earlier this month, Kirill delivered a sermon urging Russians to rally around the government “during this difficult time,” the Reuters news agency reported. Russian politicians bankrolled the construction of new churches, and religious leaders appeared front and center at state functions.

At midnight the Greek Orthodox priest will light a candle whose flame will be passed from candle to candle among the congregation illuminating the church. It reads ‘Hristos Anesti’ – ‘Christ has risen’ – a term used by Greeks during Easter in praise of Christ’s Resurrection. For the Greek Orthodox Church, the Resurrection is given primacy at Easter over the Crucifixion (the Resurrection’s conquering of death being considered the paramount event that offered hope for Humanity’s spiritual salvation). As Greek Orthodox communities formed, churches were built and priest numbers grew, firmly, and openly, reinforcing the unique spiritual and ceremonial aspects of an Orthodox ecclesiastical tradition.

What is Orthodox Easter? The Orthodox Christian holiday explained (USA TODAY)

Sunday marks Orthodox Easter for Orthodox Christians in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the holiest day on the Christian calendar.

Slavic countries often eat Kulich, a sweet bread made to celebrate Easter and the coming of spring. Celebrants also dye hard-boiled eggs red to celebrate the blood of Christ. This means the holiday typically falls later than Easter Sunday in Western Christian tradition. Here is more about the holy day observed by millions around the globe: Orthodox Christians in Europe, Africa and the Middle East celebrate Easter on the later date, determined by the older Julian calendar. Orthodox Christians in Europe, Africa and the Middle East celebrated Orthodox Easter on Sunday. But for those living in Ukraine, the holiest day on the Christian calendar was muted by a withering conflict this year.
