Life on Mars: Resurgent Crows stun Dogs in Ballarat thriller (AFL)

ADELAIDE has clung on to record its third win of the season, defeating the Western Bulldogs by just one point on Saturday. It was an error-strewn game in ...

Bontempelli's goal with just seven seconds remaining cut the margin to a solitary behind, and a quick clearance out of the middle was desperately needed. It's become somewhat of a consistent theme for the Western Bulldogs, struggling to contain power forwards. It's often a last-ditch resort with tall forwards – throw them in defence and see what happens. A free kick was paid, and Dunkley played out the game. Star's 'unusual' blunder gifts Crows famous win; Dogs exposed by 'Burgess effect': 3-2-1.

With the Dogs down by one point, Daniel played on from a kick-in and dramatically hooked a kick straight to Lachlan Gollant just inside the 50 metre arc. The Crows then pushed the ball forward, with Josh Rachele taking a strong mark directly in front of goal. He said Adelaide’s workrate was “on another level”. “Tex is incredible with his attitude every day,” Crows teammate Ben Keays told Fox Footy post-game. “They’re extremely fit, this young Adelaide side. Then the Dogs went to another gear. “They’re playing like winners, the Adelaide Crows,” Healy said. He became the 62nd player in VFL/AFL history to reach the milestone. But in the last 10 minutes, they’ve just flicked the switch and hitting targets.” But the young gun missed to the right, levelling up the scores at 56-apiece with five minutes left. Adelaide had the early third-term ascendancy. Adelaide hit the scoreboard first at the start of the second term, with Taylor Walker in the right place at the right time to kick his first goal of the match.
