A complaint was reportedly filed accusing Murray of "inappropriate" behavior on Being Mortal's set.

(Hence, presumably, the definitive statement, released by the production, that it has “been decided that production cannot continue at this time.”) Details about Being Mortal have been fairly loose since it was first announced; the film is (was?) a fictionalized portrayal of Atul Gawande’s non-fiction book of the same name, partly a memoir about his life as a doctor, and partly a meditation on our medical and cultural approaches to the end of life. Now, some more details about the complaint have been revealed, namely, who it was lodged against: The film’s star, Bill Murray.

Aziz Ansari's fill Being Mortal was suspended today and reports cite a complaint against Bill Murray as the cause.

A lot goes into making a film and the crew members we rarely talk about, like the boom mic or camera operators, heavily rely on projects like this to make a living. It is also important to note that this is not the first time we have heard Murray’s name involved in a complaint like this. This was due to a complaint filed during shooting, and it came to light when filming was halted for three days starting on Monday. This was before Searchlight Pictures sent out a letter to the film's cast and crew on Wednesday making them aware of the situation.

Searchlight Suspended 'Being Mortal' Production After Complaint ... (Variety)

"Being Mortal" suspended production over complaints about Bill Murray's inappropriate behavior on set.

“Being Mortal” is based on Atul Gawande’s 2014 nonfiction book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End.” Gawande, a practicing surgeon, describes his book — about aging, patients’ anxieties regarding death and doctor’s tendencies to fall back on false hope — as having the potential to “change medicine — and lives.” Through reflections and personal stories, the book takes a look at the limitations and failures of modern medicine at the end of a person’s life. On the 2000 action-comedy “Charlie’s Angels,” star Lucy Liu reportedly confronted Murray for “hurling insults” at her following a rewrite of a scene without his knowledge. “Late last week, we were made aware of a complaint, and we immediately looked into it,” the note said.

The suspension happened after an allegation of “inappropriate behavior'' by the actor, a person involved with the production said.

Production on the movie began in Los Angeles at the end of March and was to include a 30-day shoot. The production spent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday conducting an investigation, which resulted in the determination that work on the movie could not resume for the time being. He also surfaced in unexpected real-life moments: reading poetry to construction workers, joining a kickball game on Roosevelt Island and even photobombing a couple’s engagement picture shoot in South Carolina.

Bill Murray Reported for 'Inappropriate Behavior' on Set (The Cut)

A complaint was reportedly filed against actor Bill Murray for “inappropriate behavior” on the set of 'Being Mortal,' helmed by Aziz Ansari.

Charlie’s Angels director McG claims that Murray once headbutted him during production (Murray denies this), and he had a rumored verbal altercation with Lucy Liu while filming. He has had several public feuds with his colleagues, including producer Laura Ziskin, who worked with Murray on 1991’s What About Bob? and said that he broke her sunglasses and threatened to toss her into a lake during filming. Not much more is known about the complaint, but per Deadline it does not involve Ansari, who was the subject of a viral 2018 article describing a questionably consensual sexual encounter its author had with him.

A timeline of controversial behaviour by Bill Murray, on and off-screen (Brag Magazine)

Production on 'Being Mortal' was shut down due to controversial behaviour by Bill Murray, but as past incidents show, this is nothing new.

In the Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, as Told By Its Stars, Writers and Guests, Chevy Chase recalled a 1978 incident where him and Murray hurled insults at each other. In one particular instance, Murray apparently grabbed Ramis by the collar and threw him against a wall. I don’t know if they just weren’t in a good mood, but they weren’t getting along and it wasn’t going well.” she told Daily Beast in an interview about the movie’s 10th anniversary. Butler also detailed a 2007 incident where Murray “hit his wife in the face and then told her she was ‘lucky he didn’t kill her.'” During a heated argument with Laura Ziskin, producer of Spider Man, Murray reportedly threw her into a lake. According to reports, Murray and Ramis frequently butted heads while working on Groundhog Day, which eventually led to a fallout. Murray and Liu reportedly got into an argument on the set of Charlie’s Angels, during which he told Liu she could not act. “I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it,” she said. Murray also reportedly threw an ashtray at Dreyfuss’ father, Richard Dreyfuss, when he complained about his behaviour. Liu has reiterated this, but maintained that she does not regret standing up for herself. Here is a round-up of some notable controversies around the actor. But Bill Murray has always been problematic.
