PSG Has Turned Cause for Celebration Into Mere Consolation (Sports Illustrated)

PSG's big bet was geared toward becoming European champion, not extending its home dominance, and that's reflected in the relative apathy toward another ...

It’s not the only club to operate under that mantra, but when you put all of your Fabergé eggs in one basket, you must live with the ramifications when it doesn’t work out. That the Champions League final was relocated to Paris this year only twists the knife even more. Barring an exorbitantly expensive U-turn, the out-of-contract star is likely headed for Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer in another blow to PSG and one that leaves it suddenly reliant, for next year, anyway, on an aging Messi-Neymar duo. But all of that is besides the point. Eight will have come in the last 10 seasons, a product of the Qatari investment that has turned the club into one of Europe’s handful of domestic monopolizers. In 17 Karim Benzema–authored minutes, all of PSG’s primary targets for the season were lost, in the round of 16, no less, and all of its ghosts of European failure returned.

Behind them Marseille are now six points clear in second place, with only the top two in Ligue 1 qualifying automatically for the Champions League and third place entering in the qualifying rounds. PSG remain 15 points clear with just 15 points left to play for and also boast a far superior goal difference.

PSG win, on verge of 10th Ligue 1 title (Manning River Times)

Paris Saint-Germain all but sealed a record-equalling 10th French league crown with five rounds to spare by winning 3-0 at Angers.

PSG only had two titles to Marseille's nine when cash-rich Qatari owners QSI bought PSG in 2011. Fifth-place Monaco beat sixth-place Nice 1-0 in the race for the Champions League playoff spot, while there were also home wins for Lens, Brest, Reims and Lorient. Clermont Foot were 1-0 victors at Troyes to improve their hopes of survival but a 2-2 draw between Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne did neither side much good in their battle to avoid the drop. Marseille strengthened their bid to finish second in the automatic Champions League spot as they now hold a six-point lead over Rennes and Strasbourg. Alsace-side Strasbourg beat Rennes 2-1 at home. It looked like PSG would be able to start celebrating the title as Nantes led twice at Marseille. But Marseille rallied with Dimitri Payet netting two penalties and midfielder Amine Harit clinching a 3-2 win when he scored against his former club in the 75th. Paris Saint-Germain all but sealed a record-equalling 10th French league crown with five rounds to spare by winning 3-0 at Angers. PSG are 15 points ahead of second-place Marseille with five rounds left in and have a vastly superior goal difference, but still need one point at home against Lens on Saturday to clinch the Ligue 1 title. PSG are set to move level with Saint-Etienne, who won their 10th title in 1981 and are fighting to stay up this season.

PSG beats Angers, but title party stays on ice (beIN SPORTS AUSTRALIA)

Paris Saint-Germain earned a comfortable 3-0 win at Angers but was unable to start its Ligue 1 title party after Marseille defeated Nantes.

It instead looked likelier to extend its lead, with Hakimi being denied after sneaking in behind early doors, while Mbappe forced a fine save with another powerful left-footer from inside the box soon after. That pressure ultimately told, with Mbappe making the breakthrough before the half-hour mark courtesy of a swift exchange of passes with Achraf Hakimi and a left-footed piledriver. But, while its extended its lead in the second period thanks to Marquinhos, it was ultimately denied the title thanks to a Marseille comeback.

PARIS, April 22 — Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain are poised to clinch the Ligue 1 title this weekend when they require just a point at home to Lens, ...

Monaco have won five and lost just one of the eight league matches he has started. However, it remains to be seen how PSG supporters will respond to winning the league after certain elements of their fanbase opted to remain silent in recent home games in protest at the team’s European exit and at the club’s management. This time it does not matter what their rivals do, as a point will suffice against seventh-placed Lens at the Parc des Princes, where PSG have won every league game this season with the exception of a solitary goalless draw with Nice in December.

PSG on cusp of another title, but it will be bittersweet for Pochettino (The National)

Parisians could secure league victory on Saturday but season will be remembered for the extraordinary stumble against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The Italy goalkeeper Gigio Donnarumma’s first season in France will be remembered for the error he made to allow Benzema to score the first of his goals in the Champions League comeback. He has eight, across competitions, from his first campaign for a club other than Barcelona, where over the previous 13 seasons he always scored more than 30. Pochettino has made several veiled references to fundamental differences in his and the club’s ‘vision’. From the club’s point of view he has fallen short of his predecessor Thomas Tuchel’s standard in Europe, where the owners crave success. Sergio Ramos, the veteran who joined from Madrid, has been fit to start only four times in Ligue 1. He corrected that almost immediately by guiding PSG to the Trophee des Champions, a one-off domestic Super Cup-style trophy, but could not make up the lag behind surprise Ligue 1 pacesetters Lille in the chase for the title. Barring an implausible series of slip-ups, the 2021/22 French league will have been won by the same dominant club that has claimed seven of the last nine.

Messi and Neymar back for PSG title party? (LFP)

Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. should both be available for Paris Saint-Germain as they look to wrap up the Ligue 1 Uber Eats title with victory over RC Lens ...

Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Montpellier Hérault SC was their third win on the bounce, and they are now only three points away from fifth-placed AS Monaco. "It wasn't possible against Angers, but we had a good game and took the three points. I hope we can do it all together on Saturday at the Parc des Princes." "It's never easy, but I think it's a good performance from us. "Winning the title as soon as possible is the best possible outcome," he said. Whatever Marseille do this weekend, Paris will claim the title if they beat Lens as expected.
