Man. City vs Real Madrid facts (UEFA.com)

Manchester City's bid to reach a second successive final pits them against Real Madrid, who are in the semi-finals for the tenth time in 12 seasons.

• Ancelotti was Chelsea manager between 2009 and 2011, winning the 2009/10 Premier League and FA Cup double. • Madrid won five of their six Group D games this season, the exception a stunning 2-1 defeat at home to debutants Sheriff on Matchday 2, as they finished first in their section for the third time in four seasons. In his playing days, Guardiola's Liga record against Madrid was W6 D5 L3. • That made City's record against Spanish clubs in two-legged knockout ties W3 L4, their 2019/20 success against Real Madrid having ended a run of four successive defeats. Madrid's overall away record against English clubs is now W7 D5 L8. • The sides' only other competitive fixtures came in the 2012/13 group stage, when Madrid twice came from behind to win 3-2 in Spain on Matchday 1. • There was only one goal in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League semi-final between the clubs. They had finished first in Group C with 16 points, keeping five clean sheets and conceding only one goal – equalling the UEFA Champions League group stage record. Late goals from Gabriel Jesus (78) and Kevin De Bruyne (83), the latter a penalty after Raheem Sterling had been fouled by Dani Carvajal, turned the game around, Madrid ending with ten men as captain Sergio Ramos was dismissed four minutes from time after fouling Jesus. 1997/98 Borussia Dortmund W 2-0 (2-0 h, 0-0 a) 1959/60 Barcelona W 6-2 (3-1 h, 3-1 a) 2015/16 Real Madrid L 0-1 (0-0 h, 0-1 a)

"It is one of the happiest days as next season we will be in the Champions League," said Guardiola. "People take it for granted but we have to be in the Champions League. When it happens mathematically it's because we have done really well. City will need everyone -- particularly key players like De Bruyne and Dias -- if they are going to hold off Liverpool and safely negotiate these next six games while also trying to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. If we don't win all the games, Liverpool will be champions. They might need a bit more here on Saturday, particularly if Watford are as organised and resilient as Brighton. This time City get to put the pressure on Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp's side not in action until 24 hours later against Everton at Anfield. "It happened three years ago, we won 14 in a row to be champions. When Bernardo Silva scored the third on 82 minutes, the home supporters finally got up the courage to chant "champions, champions, champions."

Commanded the midfield and demonstrated what Manchester City might’ve been missing on the weekend. Controlled possession fairly well but did give it away a few times. Didn’t have much to defend against either but offered support going forwards. Solid shift without anything to do defensively. Not too much to do, very quiet game. This certainly unlocked the door as just 12 minutes later, it was two.

Mahrez breaks tension as Manchester City beat Brighton and return ... (The Guardian)

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium, the goals coming from Riyad Mahrez, ...

The ball came to Mahrez, he finished with the help of a deflection, and City celebrated. The manager was now in arm-waving mode, semaphoring Silva and Foden to pull wide and hectoring Aymeric Laporte. De Bruyne had run the match thus far and a simple stab of the ball from him into Brighton’s area allowed Ilkay Gündogan to hit the ball goalwards, Lewis Dunk’s block saving his team. City were cruising along in third gear but had no opener to show for their ascendancy on entering the first half’s closing phase. He was less enamoured with how Marc Cucurella hoofed the ball straight out at one point, but the manager still offered encouragement to the left of his three centre-backs. And if City beat Watford here on Saturday Liverpool will have to stew overnight on a four-point deficit before their Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield.

Man City break down stubborn Brighton to maintain title charge (The Independent)

Man City 3-0 Brighton: Pep Guardiola's side overcame spririted opposition to remain one point clear.

For a team as meek in attack as Brighton, with only 29 goals to their name all season long, it spelt the end to any hopes of getting a result, despite all their efforts at keeping City quiet. It was not a pretty goal, certainly not by City’s standards, but it might be remembered as one of the more important ones on their record this season. It was the clearest sight of goal that City would have all half and the Etihad crowd began to sense that chances would be few and far between. On one of the few occasions Brighton managed to come forward and enjoy a sustained spell of possession deep in opposition territory, there was wincing around the Etihad as City struggled to deal with crosses into the box. And for the first half, it was, give or take a few hairy moments. The crowd’s patience, and the air inside the Etihad, grows a little thinner.

Manchester City leapfrogged Liverpool back to the Premier League summit thanks to three second-half goals against Brighton.

Chelsea stayed in third place on 62 points having played a game less than both Spurs and Arsenal and still looking on course for their own Champions League spot next season. The win left Arsenal just outside the top four qualifying positions in fifth place but level with Spurs on 57 points and only behind them on goal difference. In between, Phil Foden needed the aid of a deflection to beat the Brighton goalkeeper after Mahrez spotted the England man on his own just outside the box at a corner.

This put us in the mood for more, as we captured our crucial second goal through Phil Foden who struck with a powerfully hit shot which flew past the left-hand post after a deflection. But we couldn’t find a way past a physical Brighton defence, which saw the game go into half time goalless. Pep Guardiola's side came out for the second 45 with more urgency, and it only took us eight minutes to find a pathway to goal.

Watch the best of the action from Manchester City's 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.

Bernardo completed the scoring eight minutes from time, picking out the bottom corner with a wonderful curling effort from the edge of the area after City punished the visitors for trying to play out from the back. Foden doubled the lead minutes later with a 20-yard drive that flicked off the leg of Enock Mwepu and wrongfooted Robert Sanchez in the Brighton goal. Pep Guardiola’s side returned to the top of the table with a deserved victory at the Etihad Stadium, where Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were on target as the boss claimed his 250th win in charge of the Club.

City beat Brighton to reclaim top spot (Manchester City FC)

Manchester City returned to winning ways and the top of the Premier League with a comfortable victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.

"In the first half we didn’t concede a lot. Watch the best of the action from Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. Watch more. "If you want to make this step you have to come back to those terms and the defence will help us to do that. "The way we defended was good. The people will see that. Watch all the goals from Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. Watch more. Before we could not do it for many reasons, we were mentally fatigued in the last games. The 30-year-old looked the most likely to make something happen as City struggled to make the breakthrough in the first half and, when it arrived, it was as a result of his powerful surging run. Pep Guardiola says he will wait for an update on the fitness of John Stones and Nathan Ake in the wake of Wednesday’s 3-0 Premier League win over Brighton. Watch more. They will seem the team were alive. It was a landmark night for the Belgian as he clocked up a triple century of appearances in a sky-blue shirt and he ensured he would remember the milestone fondly with a typically influential performance. The Portuguese defender replaced Nathan Ake at half-time, who appeared to be struggling with an injury in the final minutes of the first half, and more than lived up to Guardiola’s pre-match prediction that he was than ready to perform after a seven-week absence.

Man City beat Brighton to reclaim top spot (FRANCE 24)

Manchester City held their nerve to move back above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Brighton on Wednesday.

By the time Stones departed, City had the game won thanks to two goals in 12 minutes. The Portuguese's return might have come at the perfect time for Guardiola as John Stones limped off in the second half just six days before the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid. Mahrez bore the brunt of the City support's nerves as he missed the best chance before the break when he passed up the opportunity to take a quick shot from Robert Sanchez's mishit clearance.

Manchester City v Brighton, Everton v Leicester: football clockwatch ... (The Guardian)

Join John Brewin for updates from the Premier League matches being played on Wednesday.

Having made the FA Cup final and recovered from exiting the Champions League, Chelsea have less at stake but Thomas Tuchel is not one for letting up on his players, though his team did lose this fixture in May last year when the Champions League final had been reached. Manchester City v Brighton (8pm UK time kick-off): Brighton were very good on Saturday at Spurs, to follow up beating Arsenal the previous week, and looked to pose a bigger threat to City than Liverpool did to Manchester United last night. Newcastle v Crystal Palace (7.45pm): Perhaps Palace’s season ended in that rather drab semi-final loss to Chelsea, but Newcastle have been fun to watch on the field of late, with Bruno Guimarães already hitting levels of Geordie South American folk hero of Nobby Solano levels. To face Crystal Palace, Newcastle make no changes from the team that beat Leicester while Palace make four changes from Wembley, including the return of Conor Gallagher to the team. Kevin de Bruyne is risen for City, and that’s a big deal, not least because Leandro Trossard, the Brighton match-winner at Tottenham, is absent. He is already on the bench and doing much better. The confidence he has to receive the ball in any area of the pitch shows a lot of courage and then there’s his work ethic as well. City are knocking on the door, and with real menace. It’s rancorous at Everton, where the home team have gone close after a slow start, Richarlison missing a good chance. Marcel Bout has departed from his role as head of global scouting after eight years with the club. Jim leaves the club with our warmest thanks for his significant contribution and our very best wishes for the future. On a more genuine note, I am pleased for Poch to land a league title given how often the trophy stick seems to be used to beat him.”
