Liverpool vs Benfica: Ratings and analysis as Firmino double sends ... (iNews)

Jurgen Klopp will have much to ponder after his heavily rotated side made heavy work against Benfica at Anfield.

There was, however, too little time for Benfica. There will be plenty of time before the semi-final for Klopp to digest the lessons of this match. Yaremchuk is Ukrainian, who played for Dynamo Kyiv, while at Charlton Gomez was coached by Sergei Baltacha, a citizen of Mariupol, the Stalingrad of our times. The ball skimmed the top of Otamendi’s head and Firmino tapped in. Vlachodimos could only parry a shot, the ball was scooped back into the mix by Jota and Firmino finished things off for his first Champions League goal in two years. However, VAR ruled that the ball had come off James Milner’s boot. Even against a Liverpool side that had made seven changes from the team that had just failed to inflict a decisive blow in Sunday’s “ title decider”, everything had to fall perfectly for Benfica and in the 21st minute things fell very badly indeed.

History says that's a tall order – only two sides have ever won by more than a single goal at Anfield in the Champions League knockout stages, although one of them was Benfica – but a three-goal deficit would have effectively put the tie to bed already. On both occasions when the Reds have met Benfica in the knockout stages they've gone on to win the competition. Liverpool welcome Benfica to Anfield with a commanding 3-1 lead from the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final. Darwin Núñez's 49th-minute strike in the first leg wasn't just a consolation; it means Benfica now need two goals at Anfield to have any chance of even forcing extra time.

As he was in the first leg, Darwin Nunez is likely to be the key man for the visitors, with the forward netting an impressive hat-trick at the weekend. Liverpool have been going through the gears in the last couple of minutes, and they're rewarded with a corner from the left. Gilberto has certainly had a lot to deal with so far, while Luis Diaz hasn't seen much of the ball on the right. It ends up with Everton in the right half space, just outside the area. 31st min: The Liverpool pressure continues to mount, with a series of corners. It looks set for the Colombian to tap in, but Grimaldo slides in just in time, to take the ball off the attacker's foot. The assistant's flag is up, and VAR shows the decision to be correct. 46th min: A Keita shot from outside the arrow fizzes just wide of the post, he hit across the ball slightly as a Jota cross was cleared to him. 25th min: Darwin Nunez has the ball in the back of the net, running into space behind Liverpool's defence before chipping Alisson in no man's land. Nelson Verissimo's side are way off the pace in the league and were knocked out of both domestic cups by Porto and Sporting CP, meaning they have little left to play for other than going as far in Europe as they can. Jurgen Klopp's side were in control for the first half in Lisbon during the first leg of the quarter-final, with goals from Ibrahima Konate and Sadio Mane no less than they deserved. Liverpool have been comfortable enough in the first five minutes of this half.

Liverpool v Benfica: Champions League quarter-final, second leg ... (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Who will book a semi-final against Villarreal? Join Scott Murray to find out.

It’s a feast for the eyes ... and for the ears. A first corner of the evening for Liverpool out on the left. Milner tries to keep things going with a wedge down the channel. 10 min: A little bit of space for Tsimikas down the left. Jota considers a curler towards the top right, just inside the box, but opts to slip Tsimikas in on the overlap instead. He lashes a shot past Alisson and into the left-hand side of the net. 42 min: Liverpool try to settle everyone down with a little bit of sterile possession in the midfield. 47 min: Diaz wins a Liverpool a corner down the right. Goncalves wins a 50-50 with Milner and prods a ball down the inside left. The ball breaks to Henderson, who rolls into the direction of Gomez, steaming in from the right. 51 min: Diaz and Firmino latch onto a loose ball on the edge of the Benfica box. Easy for Alisson, the flag goes up for offside anyway, and that’s the end of a highly entertaining first half.

Liverpool to face Villarreal in semi-final after thrilling draw with Benfica (The Guardian)

Liverpool reached the last four of the Champions League after an entertaining 3-3 draw with Benfica in the second leg of the quarter-final at Anfield.

Naby Keïta instigated the move with a piercing pass into the Benfica area towards Díaz. Vlachodimos got there first but the goalkeeper, impressive in the first leg, fumbled once again and forced Vertonghen into a desperate clearance that he sliced to the unmarked Jota. The Liverpool striker scuffed his shot across goal but Firmino was on hand to convert into an empty net. Liverpool should have restored their lead before the interval when a defensive error by Benfica allowed Firmino to bear down on goal with Díaz unmarked to his right. Díaz drew a fine save from Vlachodimos and teed up Firmino for a header that was deflected over by Vertonghen when another Tsimikas corner spread uncertainty in the Benfica area. With Mohamed Salah rested on the bench for the first time in a Champions League game this season Klopp tasked Luis Díaz with troubling Benfica from the right. A 12th European Cup/Champions League semi-final awaits Liverpool, who have equalled Manchester United’s record for an English club, and they remain in sight of a third Champions League final appearance in five seasons under Klopp. On the two previous occasions Liverpool defeated Benfica in the quarter-finals – in 1978 and 1984 – they went on to lift the trophy. Ibrahima Konaté and a brace from Roberto Firmino put Liverpool on a comfortable course for the last four before VAR intervened in the form of two late Benfica goals.

Benfica want the ball out of play but he's already being tended to off the pitch, so Liverpool play on. It's a Tsimikas free kick from deep on the left and it's easy for Firmino. He runs off the back of Benfica's defensive line, who barely move, Otamendi not even tracking his run, and that leaves him one on one. After Yaremchuk's goal earlier, this time a long ball ends up at the feet of Darwin Nunez, who timed his run well and opened his body to curl a superb finish just inside the post. When Firmino got his second after woeful Benfica marking from a Tsimikas free-kick, it looked like the visitors could be in for a bad night.

Darwin Núñez, Benfica forward: "Benfica proved that we are great; we left everything out on the pitch. Liverpool will face Villarreal in the semi-finals. Benfica were much more competitive against an admittedly weakened Liverpool line-up, giving the home side a few things to think about, but ultimately the English side were just a class above. The Reds confirmed their last-four spot with relative ease on a night when Jürgen Klopp was able to rest several first-team regulars. "The defender had a great game. Liverpool had already done the hard work, though.
