Why 'Jesus Of Nazareth' Fits Good Friday And Easter Celebrations (The Federalist)

Franco Zeffirelli's masterpiece 'Jesus of Nazareth' is as evocative now as when it first aired 45 years ago.

For those looking to reinvigorate their own faith, or perhaps see the stories for the first time, there is no better cinematic option than “Jesus of Nazareth.” It is the kind of film that truly can change (or maybe begin) your relationship with God. This is especially true during the climactic sequence of Jesus’ carrying of the cross and subsequent crucifixion — I would imagine it difficult for all but a few to keep their eyes dry watching that scene. Another powerful quality of “Jesus of Nazareth” is how closely it stays to the New Testament narrative, and how earnestly its makers sought to maintain historical accuracy. There’s at least one thing about “Jesus of Nazareth” that sets it apart from all other film presentations of Christ: it was the realized proposal of a pope. This is itself a great blessing, because watching the film today, the comparative anonymity of Powell makes his portrayal of Jesus all the more interesting and other-worldly.

It's this day that Good Friday commemorates, showcasing Jesus' suffering and death in the 14 Stations of the Cross. It symbolizes Jesus' suffering in having to carry His own cross and serves as a humbling show of faith. St. Mark, as will most other churches, encourage people to stop on by and sit in for a sermon. More so, his actions angered Jewish elders and the establishment. Jesus was interfering with that, saying he was the savior." He was a Galiliean Jew, baptized by John the Baptist, began his own ministry, and eventually came to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

The One who is, and we who are not (ABC News)

At the beginning of the account (John 18:1-9), John shows us Jesus being arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, a place only a few hundred metres from the ...

The one who was — who is — gave himself in the place of those who are not. Jesus says, “I am”; Peter says, “I am not”. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies”, Jesus said, facing his death, “it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). Jesus did not let Peter fight for him, did not resist his own arrest, and stood before the high priest and Pilate and faced their nonsense, blame-shifting, self-aggrandising and pompous sneering without reacting, because he knew this was his task: to drink the cup the Father had given him. Sometimes, like Pilate, we scoff at the idea of truth, and capitulate with little struggle to the inevitability of injustice. He had told Jesus he would stand by him, that he would be with him to the end. Paradoxically, there is a sense in which Peter was telling the truth when he was asked, “Aren’t you one of this man’s disciples?”, and said, “I am not” (12:17). For he wasn’t, now. “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” Peter denies it, saying, “I am not”. In the face of this reality, Peter simply was not. The contrast is between Jesus’s words here, at his arrest, and the way in which Peter, Jesus’s closest friend, denies Jesus immediately following it (John 18:15-27). A connection between one of Jesus’s disciples and the high priest’s family allows Peter to get into the courtyard of the high priest’s house, where Jesus is being questioned. “When Jesus said, ‘I am’,” John tells us, those who had come to arrest Jesus “drew back and fell to the ground”. The sheer reality of his presence somehow overwhelms them. John tells us that Peter says, “I am not”. It is the exact opposite of what Jesus says in the garden. However, in John’s Greek what Jesus says is simply “I am”.

Good Friday 2022: Know all about what is 'good' in Good Friday when it is a day of mourning for Christians, its date this year along with its history, ...

Good Friday is a day of mourning, and people keep fasts and pray to the Lord. It is a day to remind oneself of Jesus Christ’s sacrifices. The term ‘Good’ is a contradiction to the events of this day, however, people believe that the term is associated with the words ‘pious or holy’ and Good Friday is followed by Easter Sunday, the day on which Jesus was resurrected from death. Catholics do not eat meat on Good Friday but can eat fish instead and it is also customary to eat warm hot cross buns. Good Friday aka Holy Friday also marks the end of Lent which is a 40-day fasting period for Christians. Good Friday falls on the sixth day of Holy weeks which lead to Easter. It is said that the aforementioned crucifixion took place around AD 30 or AD 33. Others say that it is a modification of ‘God Friday’ and that the term actually came from the words God's Friday.

Good Friday 2022: Date, history, significance and all you need to know (News9 Live)

On this day, people remember the sufferings of Jesus Christ on behalf of mankind and his greatness in tolerating the inhuman pain for the sins of the world.

Jesus was found to be innocent, and he was initially given the punishment that he was to be released after being whipped. Following his arrest, Jesus was taken to the house of Annas, the father-in-law of the high priest, Caiaphas. There he was interrogated with little result and sent bound to Caiaphas the high priest where the Sanhedrin had assembled. On this day, people remember the sufferings of Jesus Christ on behalf of mankind and his greatness in tolerating the inhuman pain for the sins of the world. From the early days of Christianity, Good Friday has been observed as a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting, a characteristic that finds expression in the German word 'Karfreitag' (Sorrowful Friday). The punishment was reversed and Jesus was sentenced to death. New Delhi: Good Friday is a day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at 'Calvary', the site of the crucifixion.

Why is Good Friday called Good Friday? - The Teal Mango (TheTealMango)

This Friday is Good Friday. It marks the same day on which Christians commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

- The first and the most common theory why Good Friday is called Good Friday is that Christians believe there is something good about the occurrence of this event. Although Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus, it also led to his Resurrection. His resurrection is proof that kindness always wins. There are various theories about why this festival is called Good Friday. We have busted a few of them. If the crucifixion of Jesus didn’t take place, it would never start his resurrection in the first place. Although the crucifixion of Jesus marked a sad event in the history of Christianity, many followers of the religion have a view that it was good in its way. The term ‘Good Friday’ doesn’t actually suggest that the Friday in question is a good, jolly, or positive event.

Good Friday Does Not Glorify Suffering (Sojourners)

Many churches I've attended did not know what to do with the gross injustice and violence of the cross.

What remains for us on Good Friday is an opportunity, an invitation, to participate in what Christ accomplished in human flesh, imitating Christ's obedience and attention to God’s divine work of redemption in the world today. As Cone writes in God of the Oppressed, “the scandal is that the gospel means liberation, that this liberation comes to the poor, and that it gives them the strength and the courage to break the conditions of servitude.” Even more, God — the divine upholder of the common good — is one who is intimately aware of the slave, the poor, the downtrodden, and the disenfranchised because God has come incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ. For the one who exploits, profits dishonestly, manipulates, fosters division, and prioritizes themselves over the whole, the cross reminds us that there is judgment. For Asian American theologian and postcolonial expert Wonhee Anne Joh, the cross is a place of love where God and humanity come together in an unlikely way. Rather than a celebration of suffering, I understand Good Friday to be a much-needed ecclesial reorientation to Jesus’ call to pick up our cross and follow him (Luke 9:23). To be sure, this is not a call into abusive relationships, oppression, or physical death. Said another way: They did not know what to do with the gross injustice and violence of Good Friday and therefore, like many churches in the United States, attempted to offer a positive take on a bad situation.
